I especially agree with point number 4. These pups deserve to be a family member. Our Stella comes for car rides on the daily and enjoys couch snuggles and then sleeps on her bed right beside mine. I wouldn't have it any other way.

I will hopefully be getting a GSD pup to be my multipurpose service dog! I am 100% going more towards a Malinois, but a GSD is really the perfect fit for me. A Mal might be a little to much until I get a bigger house, haha. You have amazing advice! Though, a working line GSD will probably prefer being outside than inside being "cuddle bugs". Anyone reading this, I highly recommend getting your info from many different resources, if you're doing research.

I take my gsd Rosie for 2 x 1 hour minimum walks per day and throw the ball in the backyard for her so she burns off treats I give her. I cook her chicken breast which I pull apart so it looks like shredded chicken along with cooked pumpkin. I always feed her 1 to 2 hours after her walks. Luckily she loves water, I bought a plastic kitty litter tray and use this as her water bowl as well as having another setup in my bedroom where Rosie sleeps at night. German Shepherds love being with their human family. Just being in the same room is usually enough but Rosie loves laying next to me on the couch and on the bed until she gets too hot and then lies on the floor. Rosie understands by my tone in my voice if I'm happy with her or not and that's all I use to get her to comply around my house. Rosie is a 2 year old rescued German shepherd. During the night if Rosie is sitting by the bedroom door I know she needs to go pee so I open the door and we go outside so she can go pee. I ask her you need to go pee and if she heads for the sliding door I now she needs to go to the toilet.

This story will be a quite a downer tale but I feel that it is very, very important for those who own GSDs but are unaware of this silent and deadly sudden killer called Hemongiosarcoma or HSA for shorthand, primarily in the GSD and Golden Retriever breeds but not uncommon in many other larger breeds. With a totally broken heart, we lost our almost 8 1/2 years old beautiful Livvie to this deadly cancer on the new year's eve of 2020. Our beloved GSD was quite a healthy girl throughout her life (with us since she was 12 weeks old) without any trademark GSD issues. She was well-trained, well cared for and well exercised. I know that a lot of people say these things as metrics differ from one person to another, but I am being objective in my statements. Circa Christmas time, I noticed a bit of lethargy more than her usual self which I thought of as her being in her "older girl age". She still ate, walked and played with her beloved balls but just my observation of her having lost a step as compared to like the past month of November. Fast forward to 12/30 when on that eve's walk, she suddenly purged her entire stomach's content 3 times in the space of minutes apart. I felt badly for having taken her on our usually long eve walks and we walked back which she managed on her own without being droopy or lazy. On 12/31 the proverbial dam busted by her panting excessively, refusing food (voracious eater), drinking excessively and peeing copiously. The final act was her peeing in her bed which had never happened before, ever! I immediately knew that this was a terrible sign as I had experienced this peeing in bed with my beloved 10 YO black lab/retriever mix almost 5 years earlier (he was euthanized shortly after due to stroke complications). On that new year's afternoon, we rushed Livvie to the ER with an all-of-a-sudden distended stomach for what I had thought was the dreaded bloat. Almost 1 hour later as we the doggie parents were waiting outside during this dreadful Covid-19 pandemic and all the protocols, we received a call from the ER veterinarian uttering words like Hemongiosarcoma and Hemoabdomen that I had never, ever heard pf before! Basically the X-Rays and then ultrasound showed that there had been a splenic mass, most likely the sarcoma (cancerous) version which had ruptured and that our girl was hemorrhaging badly internally with the stomach being filled with blood. None of the offered options were good which basically boiled down to taking her back home loaded with meds for her to pass away gently at home perhaps overnight or the next few days, emergency surgery with the very high likelihood of her being humanely euthanized on the table if the cancer was found to be metastasized as badly as the exams had indicated or lastly to say our very sad and shockingly sudden goodbyes to her there and then with us spending as much time as we wanted with her in the tent set outside for this tragic purpose. We opted for the last gawd awful option as we did not want our girl to suffer any more since she was always such a proud and stoic girl which never showed us any significant signs of this dreadful and fast terminal disease. In these past 30 dreadful days, I have gone through all arrays of grief and the survivors guilt plus all the whats & ifs. I have done as much research as possible and have familiarized myself with this dreadful HSA which can manifest itself in 3 major ways (visceral and dermal being the main two). By writing about our experience, I feel that I am giving back to the community which can otherwise be as clueless as I was about this almost 6 weeks ago. The vet did say that this is a very aggressive form of cancer with almost no signs, think of it as sudden and shocking as heart-attack for humans. I do not mean to be an alarmist but from all my readings, I have come across many tales of GSD owners losing their beloved ones to this awful deadly killer. I will also add that some vets may not even diagnose this HSA properly because they may not have the proper knowledge or the equipment for diagnosis. The takeaways are these: Please educate yourselves about HSA and different forms of it. Please try to have X-Rays, ultrasounds and blood count tests at your GSD's annual exams starting at age 5 but many vets will tell you that this is an overkill plus being expensive. Even if found and caught early, the prognosis is terrible but perhaps with the knowledge at hand, the quality for the remainder of life may become a different kind of decision.

One of our German Shepherds died of a twisted stomach. He ate his normal amount of food, the amount required for his weight which was pretty average, that day on a proper feeding schedule. I had noticed him acting unusual around 11pm, notified my family, we rushed him to the emergency clinic but he died in the car on the way, at around 1-2am.

@@Lucythegermanshepherd Thank you very much. For stomach bloat, is it better to feed the dogs at floor level or have their bowl elevated? We had to use an elevated bowl because ours had hip dysplasia, but the probability of our new puppy to have hip dysplasia would be really low since the dam and the sire are hips, elbows, and DM tested. We would like to do our best to prevent stomach bloat. I have seen many people saying it is better to have their bowls on the floor to prevent it. Thank you again for all your videos.

Thanks for the video, I discovered your channel some months ago and I have to say your videos are the best when it comes to tips and information about GS. I’m getting my first puppy (GS of course!) in May and I can’t wait !! However, I have some questions about the utilization of prong / choking collars. I’ve seen in your videos that you’re using a Prong collar with Lucy and I don’t really understand why since she’s perfectly trained and trustable. Like I don’t get why she can be off leash in the middle of the city and then attached with a prong collar? One of my main preoccupation is leash training and walking. I haven’t found really good content yet on KZbin about it. I would be very happy to see you talk about it (with some demos) and tell us all the steps you’ve been through with Lucy. I’m concerned about not controlling a full grown GS when going out for walks and having her pulling me all the time. Thank you 🙏

Hey thanks for the comment. I have always used a prong collar with Lucy when it comes to training. When its on she just knows its time to work and be well behaved. Also I am always teaching her new things so its nice to be able to utilize it when needed. She does walk very well on and off lead but I originally got the prong to help with her insane pulling. The prong stopped it almost instantly. She's also on the prong when I do videos as It just gives me more control when I am occupied with filming and everything else. She also does loads of walks off camera without the prong. My wife does not use a prong as she's not a fan. Well done getting your German Shepherd soon and yes I will look at doing those videos for you 😎

It is very frightening when bloat does happen as my gsd/akita had it a couple of months ago. Luckily he got to the vets in time but he seems to be more prone to it than usual. I have always feed him on a tall feeder and not allowed him to run around an hour before and an hour to 2 after but he has had it once and nearly had it a couple of times since. Do you have any other recommendations I could try to limit it happening even more. 💞

I heard there is a preventative surgery where they connect the stomach to the surrounding tissue so it's held in place. I'm not sure if your dog would still qualify since it's already happened though. Im gonna go look for what it's called and edit this Edit: the surgery is called a gastropexi and the vets surgically attach the stomach to the inner wall of the dogs body. It doesn't prevent bloat (all of the gas build up) but it does prevent the twisting and flipping of the stomach. I hope your dog stays healthy.

Hey there! My dad and I are thinking of getting a dog and a german shepherd has been on our minds recently. We have experience raising german shepherds as we were lucky enough to have about 4-5 since the 80's! (Lol im only 18 so im not very knowledgeable on how many we've had already! 😅) Our last GSD was a male named Max and he was truly a lovely soul and was more on the gentle and clumsy side! Sadly he passed away in 2015 when he was only 9 y.o. 😢 His legs were in bad condition and he had trouble getting up at times. He was a showdog in the earlier periods of his life so would that have had an effect on his hind legs? Also, are there any key features to look for in a pup to make sure that they wont grow up to have bad hind legs? It's always heartbreaking to have to see a dog of our's go through such pain 😢 Thank you! Loving this channel a whole heap and Queen Lucy just as much! Keep it up, mate!😁

Is he /she on a kibble? It should say on the packet what a puppy of his ages needs. Different kibble and food will vary

Go to your vet! They should have good advice. But if you can, I would really recommend going to someone that specializes in dog nutrition, so that you can get the best advice possible.

Hello! First, thanks for your videos, very helpful and lovely. Just want to say, it's nice to see someone who have passion in videomaking and dogs. This combination is great. I would just like to tell you, that it would be much better, if you add some cutscenes with Lucy somewhere in the video, other than couch (like you didi here at 1:07). It's getting kinda boring after so many videos to see you always just sit and talk to camera. Cheers and hope to see some more camera footage placed inside this "talking in front of camera" type of videos. You are talented videomaker, it would be shame not take advantage of it. Anyways, huge fun and keep works done!

My german shepherd is 13 weeks old. She plays bites sometimes but when she does it hurts. I start bleeding I have 20 bites so far that I've bled on and if I close or hold her muzzle when she does that she does it even more. Please tell me what I should do.

Train your pup every day. Suggest to your mum and dad that a trainer to teach you guys the ropes would be a great idea for the pup and your family. ☺

It’s insane to feed dogs one time/day because of your work or training schedule. You can have her stomach fixed at spay surgery so she won’t bloat.

They can still expierence bloat. Tacking the stomach to the Abdominal wall prevents the stomach from flipping.

What are your thoughts on castration? To be brief I think it’s immoral and u healthy for dogs, more unhealthy for larger breeds imo

It’s perfect fine if you give the dog time to reach maturity. As a German Shepherd breeder, I recommend waiting 24 months if you feel the need to do it. Personally I don’t alter my dogs unless it would be medically necessary.

Same. Although my mom wants to spay our chihuahua mix. It won't be as bad on her though since she's like 10lbs. Plus she's almost 3yrs old so I'm glad she had her hormones so she grew properly especially since we rescued her and she was emaciated and really needed those hormones. My mom's boyfriend wants to backyard breed her for money even though she has behavioral issues, unknown genetics, and doesn't have heath tests done. My mom is spaying her so that he can't breed her. I'd keep both male or female (whichever one I get) intact but I also wouldn't consider breeding so I get why my mom is doing it bc her boyfriend is an idiot.
