I feel like Poatan is technical in the things he does, but he does not seem to have a very diverse skill set. I will say, the fact everyone knows what he is going to do, and he still KO’s his opponents with it, shows his mastery of the hook and flying knee.

From what I've seen from interviews and videos of his training, Pereira is a specialist through and through. He knows what he's good at, and he strategizes around those skills. Adesanya is a more technical sound fighter with a great mobility and a wider skillset, so I think the fight will be determined by Adesanya's ability to make adjustments to neutralise Pereira. I give it to Adesanya so long as he goes for the KO. If he fights safe, he's only giving Pereira more opportunities to land that hook (I say this as an Izzy fan who hasn't been bothered by his last few "boring" performances).

You should of mentioned his overall body mechanics, a fundamental example of it that stands out to me is something he does with his knee too hook combination. When he brings the right knee down his left leg and hips are already loaded in the position to throw a powerful right hook, he explodes off the leg turning the knee in to further load the hips. Then the shoulder rotates over and he releases all the tension in the hips simultaneously. He rotates over all the way to the opposite side effectively loading it during a strike. Makes a lot of what hes throwing really powerful, and fast, particularly his close range combinations.

Long comment ahead. I been watching pereira since i first heard about him 3 years ago and this is what i learned. -First his power while there is an obvious genetic advantage he has great body mechanics to throw with as much power as possible, but not only that he has great timing to throw as soon as there is an opening and he has insane accuracy, his accuracy is probably the biggest factor to his power because in all of his ko's he always hit right on the chin or the temple, he never throws sloppy huge haymakers without regards where it lands. When he throws his hook, his feet are standing basically on a bladed side stance but his shoulders are square towards his opponent so he is in a loaded stance to throw that hook with power without having a huge load up because he is already in a stance where he can throw his hook with power. And like i said, he has insane accuracy, honestly i am surprised someone of your level does not see his level of accuracy but that is the scariest part because is always right on the chin or temple, it never misses it's mark and that paired with the timing to shoot as soon as there is an opening is what creates his devastating power. -On his training he always lift explosively, obviously genetics are a factor but like every single power puncher he always trains lifting heavy and explosively to maximize his power. He also cuts a lot of weight, he walks around 220 lbs currently so that gives him an advantage too. On his fight with adesanya he had 20 fights at the time while adesanya had like 80 fights back then and while is true that adesanya had him in trouble for a moment but consider the absurd difference in experience they had, Pereira back then had less than a handful of years of training. The hook that he landed was not a fluke at all, during the fight he throw that right overhand to hook combo multiple times but was blocked, pereira adjusted by throwing the right hand with more speed but less power so he could get in the position to throw the left hook faster and that adjustments is how he caught Adesanya. Honestly i am more impressed by fighters like him that fighters like you because while fighters like you are better at more complex strategies and visually more aesthetic techniques, Pereira has way better punching mechanics than you, better accuracy than you and better timing than you and while his strategies are very simple, those strategies are still very effective at all levels of combat and that paired with his better technique for power, his obvious genetic advantage and his weight training meant for power he can overcome absurd levels of experience and "better" technique like he did with adesanya. I understand why he may not impress you as much, because his technique doesn't look as good as other fighters, but fighters like him are the type that is impossible to beat by technical fighters like you or adesanya.
@Prymary22 жыл бұрын
I agree with the part about Pereira's accuracy. Even the recent KO of Sean Strickland, it's not a big looping winding shot but he hits Sean directly on the nerve of his jaw regardless. The fight with him vs Adesanya is very interesting because he knows that he can take the 25 minutes to sort of feel things out and engage on his terms as opposed to kickboxing where he'd have to be doing something always. With that being said, I still think Pereira is gonna KO Adesanya.

Im a beginner, but i have to agree, from what i have heard he is a former boxer champion, so maybe thats why his hook is so good compare to others and with his build not to use knees would be a criminal offense. Gabriel gave Pereira props for his left hook which can be thrown with accuracy at different distances, getting his head off line in exchanges and ability to change levels with his strikes, including a devasting right knee. I don't think the reason Gabriel said Pereira isn't overly technical is not because his techniques aren't fancy but because he's also seeing Pereira's weaknesses. If power and strength always overcome more technical fighters, then Muhammad Ali would not have beaten Sonny Liston (who had great technique for power), George Foreman, Ken Norton or Joe Frazier to name a few; Sugar Ray Leonard would not have beaten Roberto Duran; Floyd Mayweather would not be 50-0; Saenchai would not be able to fight opponents 15 pounds heavier than he is; Samart (arguably the greatest Muay Thai Fighter of all time) would never have been champion; and Giorgio Petrosyan would have lost to all the Dutch fighters he beat - for a few examples.

i don't have the technical knowledge to really have an opinion about pereira's level, but something that is interesting and i think you probably don't know is that one thing that fighters that trained with him almost always mention in interviews is that he seems to make mistakes, but when they trained with him they realised that he does it intentionally to set things up, i have seen it mentioned a bunch of times in different interviews over the last few months, but they are all in portuguese and i think that information hasn't made it to the english speaking side of the internet, also i'm not 100% sure on this but if i'm not mistaken when he knocked out adesanya he was still an alcoholic and he took the fight on short notice.

I use a stiff 6ft heavy bag 65kg (like it around 65-70% of bodyweight) to swing but not swing too much. And when training power I always hit through the bag even with a lunge jab. @13:00 It's a by product of Pereira starting his kickboxing career late than being an alcholic during the early parts of it. However I don't understand the fixation towards his Adasanya rematch; He took the fight on 16 days notice, coming off of surgery, and landed that one strike he always seems to find. Calling it a "fluke" is just total nonsense, he knows how to find those openings and he caught Adasanya with it. Also he improved massively after that fight, look at his trilogy with Wilnis that captures his constant improvement over the years or his 2 fights with Vahiktov, arguably defeated him twice.

Alex put points people and shuts them down. It would be one thing if he could only win by scoring KOs/KDs like Wilder or Ngannou. But Alex is able to use relatively low damage techniques to out Point you or systematically shut you down before going in for the kill. The set up he used for Sean Strickland to KO him was insane, this is the same Sean Strickland who has some of the highest upper body defense rate in the UFC. Alex Pereira was also able to put leg kick Jan Blachowiz even though he was toasted as having the best leg kick defense in the UFC and was able to put strike Israel Adesanya. Alex went on to out kick him and out Point him. His technique and style doesn’t look that pretty but he’s been able to make the leather of his glove hit the meat on his opponent’s body consistently without having to put real power behind his shots.

This is off topic but recently you showed a flexibility drill to work on high kicks, I can throw high kicks, but my flexibility in my hips is really bad, and I can’t throw them without full power due to this so it’s hard to practice, I tried your drills but it’s hard to see improvements my hips are just extremely tight, they make a lot of clicking noises and stuff like when I pull my knees up. Not sure if you’ll see this but I’d love if you have any insights on how to get over this. I’ve been stretching for a long time and I’m generally fairly flexible but I get really tight a lot especially in my lower back and hips.

for the left hook my build is around 6’3 175 currently bulking up to 205 but my mma style is currently striking focused with lary holmes hand placement (this makes it hard for them to see what shots i throw and i’ve almost perfected lary holmes jab) (lead hand down) orthodox with a stance like anderson silva because i use a lot of his striking (from his dvd’s) how can i still add some of these things including the left hood

Will Izzy's fast long-range attacks, feints, and evasive footwork be enough to beat Pereira, or will Pereira manage to find the openings to catch and KO Izzy again, or who'll run or clinch up first when tagged and stunned, interesting to see what'll happen now that it's in MMA

Lifting weights don't slow your punches, gaining weight does but also your power goes up too. It's literally impossible for a trained fighter to be faster at a higher weight class than his former

Gabriel i love you and i would never disagree with you bit i have to say i am impressed by pereira. while of course you out rank me in knowlege and expreience but i do think alex has something special. yes i do agree that issy should be the more favoured and the hype train around him is a bit much. though for someone starting at 21 and coming from a tale of poverty and addction to have done what he has done is amzing. puls his ablity for timing pressure and just over all being a hard fight i do think there is something special about him. while i do favor issy but i think it would have to be by out pointing of maybe a crazy sub but i dont see issy pushing the action for this one and i do think alex wining would be better fir the sport.
