I am Puerto Rican man...married to a Vietnamese woman. 23 years of marriage...we met in High School. Many moons ago. I tell my friends I got her off the boat. haha. My wife laughs at this. We both laugh at each others cultures......little things. Its great. Our marriage has been great...some challenges (could not have kids).....but patience...on both sides....and understanding. Language barrier, culture barrier..religions....and all. But if you both love each other....and the love is deep..nothing is an obstacle. A challenge....yes. I could not think of EVER leaving my wife for any reason. She is perfect for me. And I think I for her. This is a good topic to maybe do a part 2...part 3....on and on. All the things you talked about are true..for any mix race relationship. Good job.

1. Scratch off all the 3 digit codes on the back of your credit card, after putting them in an email to yourself. 2. Bring about $700 in Traveler's Checks (purely for emergency only). 3. Xerox copy your passport. 4. Lots of rubbers 5. Crisp 100's (put in hotel safe when you arrive. Carry your xerox copy of your passport and about $50 max at any time.

Garth Rice. Scott is giving very good advice, especially when he tells you to NOT carry your original passport. I don't understand why you are scolding him but it's okay. there are still a lot of people who live in denial about the situation in the Philippines. They just don't want to hear the truth and the truth is bad and ugly. If you want to call me a useless scum, then fine. I will NOT lower myself to your level and start to scald you too. However, I have some advice for you. OPEN YOUR EYES next time you visit the Philippines and see what really is going there. Or, maybe you ARE a filipino who don't want to hear ? Then I have another advice for you : STOP LYING TO YOURSELF and see your fellow citizen like they really are, or at least 50 % of them, like many filipino TOLD ME. Yes, there ARE filipinos who know and will admit it, if you ask them nicely.

Arian Vito I will admit I came on too. strong as I am tired of people saying the country is full of scammers. The whole. world has scammers just not the Philippines. My wife lives there and I live there 6 months of the year and up to today I can say by following. the same rules I follow everywhere I have never been ripped off or. been treated unfairly.

Garth Rice I'm sorry but Scott Johnson is absolutely correct. At least from my experience dealing with Filipinos my self in the past. I'm sorry but it's the truth. They are the most lying, scam artists I've ever seen in my life compared to any other race. I'll deal with any race besides Filipinos.

Don't fall in love with a pretty face, validate that your chosen partner really loves you and be sure that you love her for the right reasons. Don't rely on falling "in love" through an online dating site, ensure you are together for extended period before even considering marriage (just like you would back home) The reputation of the Philippines has suffered due to the scammer culture (particularly online) but for every scammer there are 100 good, honest girls out there...and yes many would love to meet a foreigner.

+Bob Bruce They are literally everywhere but I feel many foreign guys look in the wrong places, e.g. bars frequented by foreigners can act like a magnet for girls and some will not be looking at you, they will be looking at your wallet, that I can't deny. Girls purely motivated by money are maybe not ideal candidates....but lets be honest does the same not apply in the west?

Filipina here! We are programme/trained to be a good wife from our parents and also in school.We are conservative and family oriented too. We love our traditional role of being a wife, and the role of the husband is to be a good provider. I was told by my mom that I have to know everything to manage the house. In the event that the husband get sick that I need to take charge to earn money and support the family while the man is resting.I am the youngest of five siblings and we are all educated and earning money ,but we make it sure that the man lead the house.We respect men.I received a lot of comments from american white friends that I should not bring our third world culture here in the United States ( I told them, It is bad for the Filipino wife to stay at night at the girls party if you have a husband waiting for you) I received a lot of negative comments about that too. I was sad but it never change me a bit. I am who I am. I am proud of my heritage and I am proud who I am.

In my experience, whenever one goes to another country, you should be prepared to adapt to THEIR way of life. Not the other way around.I'm so sick and tired of foreigners coming to America and expecting Americans to conform to THEIR way of life or thinking. If I go to someones house, I have to go by their rules in their home. I can't bring my own rules and expect the host to conform to them. When I move to the Phils, I have every intention of adapting to the Filipino way of life. Otherwise, why go?One of the biggest reasons why I love and respect Filipinos is their commitment to family. Westerners can learn a lesson from Filipinos on this point. I've been with my fiancee for 4 years. We were together here in the US for 3 years. She is back in the Phils because of typhoon that hit family farm in Northern Mindanao, to help her family. Very few westerners would do this for family. It made me love her even more. I have been accepted by everyone in her family to this point. I have sent medicine and at times money, to help out. I've had to reassure them that my fiancee never asked me to send anything. That I did it from my own heart. For this, I have gained even more respect from her family. Especially her mom and dad. As far as I am concerned, and as far as they are concerned, we are already family. I want to thank you Mira, you're on point about the things you have mentioned in your video. Keep up the good work.

+Barry Jackson I agree with you completely about adapting to culturein stead of forcing it on others. Thatbe ing said, I wanted to say that Filipino people adapt wellto American culture. I think they even have an easier time than East Asians due to many Filipino being Christian. They share a similar system of values.

Barry Jackson You are absolutely, positively correct. It can be extremely frustrating especially when it starts getting to the point when it interferes with economic opportunity. For example, a few months ago I was rejected from my dream job because they had just added Spanish as a required secondary language that I did not speak at the time of the interview. I told them I would be willing to learn it within a short period of time but I never got a call back from them. I was pissed about that for weeks. That was my only opportunity to have gotten my foot in the door to a way better position. Now, I have to climb the latter for years before I'm even eligible for the position I interviewed for. It sucks that we have to accomadate them when they are in our country. I was even pissed at everytime I saw an immigrant. It really has changed my perspective about immigrants. At first, I was more open to immigrants. But now I really see how they have many negative impacts on Americans lifestyles. I wouldn't be dealing with this if these bastards were not here. It's hard enough in our country even without immigration.

If you are a foreigner married to Filipino. It's not your responsibility to support her family. You're not Filipino. It's Filipino spouse responsibility. Not yours.

kobzster06 it doesn't matter. It's not the husband job to support the family, especially if isn't Filipino. If he is giving her monthly allowance he needs to tell her "this is your money. Spend it how you wish." He needs to explain to her that he is not an ATM. If she has a job he needs to explain to her once the bills are paid, you can do whatever you like. You don't understand, Filipinos do not understand the importance of money. You start giving her family money they going to expect you to give them money all the time. It's not the foreigner's job to support the family. That's what my Filipino uncle told my American dad. He's not Filipino. Not his job. My family in the Philippines only ask me for money, why. I am the one with Filipino blood, not my dad. I put very strict rules in giving money to my family, if I don't they will ask for money for everything under the sun. If you don't understand what I am saying, you really do not understand the culture or mindset of Filipinos.
@LittleImpaler
@LittleImpaler 8 жыл бұрын
+Joe Cau Again, it's not the foreigner's job. it's hers. Her family affairs have NOTHING to do with him, because he is not Filipino. I am not going to explain this again. if you don't understand where I am getting at. Then you truly don't understand the Filipino culture. Again, if you give her family money they are going to always EXPECT money from you. Why is this so hard for non-Filipinos to understand. Let me put it this way. if someone makes it in the family whether they made it in America or got married to foreigner who makes a lot money they expect you, the ATM machine to support ALL of them. This "being self-reliance" doesn't exist over there in the Philippines. the Philippines is a very Asian culture.

+Sandy Shandy thank you for your opinion. But first of all i wasn't putting anyone down. second its my personal opinion of what i saw and yes its around my city. third i made this channel and if you saw the about me video, i have stated that i have no intention of representing anyone, or anybody or even my country, except my self and my opinion. you see, as an educated person you have to see the there ides of the the story, plus you have mentioned as an educated person you have to respect other people's beliefs,ideas which came form personal experiences and environment not merely academic knowledge. now i respect your opinion and how you see me, to be honest you are one of those few who have said that to me, and its not new for me. yu are just one of them. i can say i'm used to being put down by my own blood for expressing my opinion and the other side of reality. I am very much familiar that there are professionals and i have not generalized all, since i had a disclaimer regarding my about channel. If you re a part of those other filipnas then its good, if the other sides whom are still misunderstood, and as we know our ph society is still a triangle class wherein the poor and the middle class are still at the bottom of the Hierarchy and they are the ones who usually encounters foreigners online and meet them basically its still a majority. but thanks for stating your opinion. if you have felt that you are being put down sorry about that, but the ones that i stated have been problems not only for those who met online,offline even when they are already in their professional field due to lack of cultural awareness,language (for asians)and even foreigners who have families who are not open to interracial marriages. Just because it doesn't align with your personal belief doesn't mean its wrong and doesn't mean your right neither. At the end of the day these foreigners have their choice coz they have their own mind as well.

My mother-in-law was very unhappy when I married her daughter while we were both living in Japan. For many years it caused friction between us, and her mother constantly picked fights with me over the smallest stuff every time we went to visit to California. My wife would naturally take her mother's side regardless of the situation. After putting up with it for about ten years I finally had it out with my wife right before our next visit. I told her that she had to make up her mind, and either realize she was my wife and to defend me against these attacks instead of joining in, or I would just leave her there and come home with our kid. When we walked in the door after getting off the airplane my wife took her mom to the side and told her that enough was enough, and that would be the end of the nonsense. The truce has mostly held over the last 33 years, but with Mom pushing past 90 she is getting pretty sharp tongued. Now I just chalk it up to age and ignore it. :-)

You're right regarding the discrimination part. I mean discrimination within the culture and family as you say. I'm a FILAM and have experienced this very well from both sides of my family. My cousin also a FILAM, met a Filipina overseas at a hospital they both work at; she's a nurse and he's a specialty doctor. They fell in love and have been in a relationship for 3 years. We are a close knit family and share things with each other, however, this he kept to himself as he knew the bombardment of criticism coming his way from the family. As it is dad's family was not happy he married a Filipina and mom's family was not happy because dad don't believe in supporting her family (they had jobs, but quit after mom married dad). The relationship ended due to pressures from both sides of the family. Fortunately, the couples went back to each other and decided to marry for their love of each other and not their families. It was a hard decision for them to make, but it was necessary for their love sake. Lessons learned: 1) Don't allow cultures to be a deal breaker of your love for each other. 2) Communicate cultural and family beliefs and resolve the differences before committing to a relationship. 3) Know that your marriage will be between both couples and not allow interference from their perspective family.I'm in a relationship with a Filipina as well and with similar status as my cousin. After witnessing what my cousin went through, I used the points I mentioned above and it worked for us. One additional point I'd like to share with your listeners and that is a prenuptial agreement. Even if you have minimal assets, it's best to incorporate a prenuptial agreement for security. Just a thought.

Why are people surprised that someone from a poor back ground & no welfare state (where no money means no house, no food , no pension & no medicine ) would want a much wealthier partner to help her family out? What kind of a human would escape poverty and not look over her shoulder at her parents and siblings and want to do what she could to help them.? If you buy a lottery ticket then you accept that money can change your life ...marrying a man with a western salary is a life changing thing for a person struggling to survive. Have you ever seen a wealthy but ugly single man in the west ? No..many western women value money as much as some asian women do. Its no different.

You are right, but marriage is for dummies in this day and age. Just live together. Her hormones of passion will fade as nature intended and you will be living in a studio apartment on the poor side of town while her and her family are living in what was your house and you get to send her money every month on top of that. What's in it for you? If she loves you no ring is required. The ring is required because she doesn't.

If i was being cynical id say it does stop you running off with the next cute girl that comes along once your wifes reproduction value has reduced. In the past and still in many parts of the world , women were totally reliant on men financially. We as men are simply not as loyal as women. ( as a whole) which is probably why they like the contract of marriage. . The contract stops men using them for just a few short years to make babies.
@bobbruce4135

All of your comments are very true. But the risk of divorce in the West is also very true. So, as many divorce attorneys suggest, get snipped and only live-together or get pre-nup. It's sad how the hormones of love will dissipate. Most women everywhere are hypergamous IF the opportunity to do so is possible.

There's just too many "women" in the Philippines who are looking to dig gold no matter what and it goes far beyond looking for a better life.  Some of these women want to show off their new partner's "wealth" and quite frankly, it's disgusting and the reason people have the misconception that money is the main goal for all women in the Philippines who marry foreigners.

Great video, I think you expressed these five things very well and fostered a real empathy of what she maybe challenged with. Especial in a new relationship it can be hard for a spouse to get into the head of his wife/girl friend, given language, unfamiliarity. Patience listening, being supportive and buffering her until she finds her feet so to speak is going to be necessary.

I'm engaged to a Filipina, and her younger brother is one of my best friends. I help him out whenever I can, and her parents. I do not mind much at all because they are family to me. I am extremely fortunate to have a weekend job I love doing as I earn 24 hours of extra money each week. Plus my regular 40 hour a week job I really enjoy. I planned on the costs of bringing her and her daughter here to the U.S. for about 2 years now. In my opinion your right on with what you talked about. :)

Its ok, actually better if you know she love you for money. IMHO what important is relationships are honest. If you know this up front, save yourself lots of pain. First, find a girl with SMALL family. Give her allowance which is HER money only. She can give to family, she can spend, she can save. But she cannot ask you for more. Then, don't buy nice house phillipines, she might kill you for ownership transfer if you're married. RENT RENT RENT. don't keep lot o money in Phillipines, transfer over a little at a time, which require your signature or bank visit to get out. So she will make priority to keep you alive, healthy and happy so you can visit bank for her..

honestly, not to cause culture clash, but if your woman doesnt want to follow your culture more than she wants you to follow hers, leave her. she will constantly cause you problems. so i adapt but so did she. its mandatory. its never an argument, i just stand my ground and she eventually gives in respectfully and in the end, she is grateful for it. i love my pinay wife, i met here after she became a legal here in canada. but i know, and so do most of you, know the truth of their drama. oh so much drama, world champs of it. aside from that, they just like any other people around the world, give and take such and such stuff. you got to avoid the drama though, or you will be miserable as long as you are with her. if its not her drama, its her family's or her friend's. they love it, they crave it. they would even kill for it, its their addiction drug of choice. they love their poison/drama. take it away and they rather die, they live for it. north american women expect to be queens and princesses, to be put on a pedestal. pinays expect to play the drama game. its mostly a make believe story they live out in their imagination that has little to do with reality. resembles reality but twisted here and there to deviate from the path of the real truth. if you go to far down that path, you are lost forever and will have to lobotomise yourself to keep her, or challenge her to bring her back to reality. if they love the drama to much, you will lose her and you humiliated her by calling out her game. got to know how to spar without battles or you will suffer and lose. just leave her if you dont know what you are doing. and dont pretend you do if you dont know their culture like you know your math cuz they will beat you down with experience. their drama math is not of any other world on this planet. they have already aced it while you are not even a C- yet. if you know what you are doing and can keep them on the right path, she will be ok. dont let them get lost in their own drama world. not easy tho. dont kid yourself when you find a nice pinay that seems drama free but likes to go out all the time, party party party. friends friends friends. wrong. they love the atmosphere, not the people. they dont have friends, they are only there to party. if you dont show up for the party, you are nothing. if you show up for the party, you are still nothing but a face in the crowd and they love the crowd. the bigger the better. this type dont count friends, they count faces, only. fb lists in the hundreds or even thousands, all strangers. dont know anything about any of them. careful if they never have an opinion. if you can get your woman to talk to you in a conversation, thats a rare thing for a pinay. "im just listening" they always say. to what? i stopped talking five minutes ago! most of the time its cuz they have low self esteem, insecure or shy. they are not really taught to interact [other than joining the party] they mostly just go along with the flow. thats not all bad, most mean no harm by it, the rest just dont care and are just along for the free ride in between the parties. hope that helps. what to look out for, good and/or bad. good luck but use more skill to have good fortune.

I have a friend who has been a friend of mine now for 7 years when the 2016 hits. She has told me of her troubled past, and how she was beaten once and it tore her ear, to make it disfigured. She started styling her hair so that ear would not be seen, and the woman is 5'0" tall, age 43, and 52-54 kilos with hair down to her waistline. Even with a background of Negrito, and kind of medium brown complexion, or I call it honey brown. She looks relatively young for 43 in my eyes. She is really religious and we kind of practice many things, such as not going all out for holidays. We don't do much celebration, or none at all. I actually gave each of my children gift cards, and my daughter shoes. Yet with them being almost grown ups, I didn't put up a tree, no decorations. I was happy again for maybe the 6th year that Xmas has passed. We both agreed that is a crazy holiday.The sadness is, she is the lady, or the daughter of her family from a young age who has been the "breadwinner" of her family. She now has managed to earn P27,000 a month and still worries about her retirement, since she sends around P15,000 to her mom and dad each month. I became sick in 2014 and all of my plans fell threw to be a husband, but we remained friends when my own family discouraged me in doing so. No so much my children, 24/19/17, but a mom, and other members who's never even met this woman.This is a woman who speaks 5 languages from working in so many countries, having to learn them all. That is Mandarin, English, Filipino, Cebuano, what the speak in Saudi Arabia, and she told me, since she is now in Thailand, she is learning Japanese from a friend who also lives there. She works for a company as a translator in fact, and she is a supervisor. I recall the story she told about being asked for maybe 8 to 12 gifts when she returned from her last job. She said she had went through this and she sent her luggage in boxes, having them shipped, instead of bringing it. So when she returned, all she had was a carry on bags. Two bags and when people saw her, she would stay indoors for maybe 2 to 5 days. This was to avoid the moochers I call them. The people who ask for much, and never give anything.Everything in your video is true and I have spoken to her on Cam-to-Cam several times, and we've shared long letters and did the text thing on Face Book. She has an older brother, and a younger sister who makes excuses about having bills and more, so they can't give more than she does.I understood what your video explained, and I also saw this in a even more focused form once hearing this. There is maybe like 10% if that of a language barrier. She understands mostly all of what is going on. Even though we're both over 40, we still hope for that day to come to be together. Discrimination, I don't worry about, I already get a lot from being a black man...

+Mike Lover in the philippines i have seen way older, about 70 years old, a black guy with a very nice filipina lady. and many of them do want the black guys. and they are very faithful to them and dont play the games like the u.s. white and black girls do, these filipina girls are very different from that. but yes every race and culture does have its bar girls and hookers. ooh yeah you will have her friends or cousins see you on facebook and they will be looking for that free ride and asking you to send them money or they will be asking way personal things. so its best to just cut that off right away. the girl you are talking to should also agree to this as she will know it is going to cause problems in her life also. from chicago to hong kong then onto manila then 3rd plane to the place where she lives will cost 1,200 u.s. dollars round trip. and can be found for 760 dollars some times during the winter months. you really should go see the place. have you ever used a squat toilet, you may need to ask her if this is what she use in the country she is in now. you will need to learn how to use it before going, it will make the visit much better once you learn how. this way you wont explode. in chicago air port i met a few older black guys with filipina, they are so happy. no stupid drama in their lives. oohh when you get ready to go see her. dont be going out to the chinese buffet places, that is not asian food and is nothing like what you will find in china, Thailand and philippines. and the food will vary from different parts of the same country.

+ Myra K I fully support your opinion on cultural differences, primarily because it's often forgotten or totally underestimated. Many Europeans and Americans come to the Philippines with a "home from home" attitude and on the surface it does appear to be a very western society (particuilary in places like e.g. Makati)....but it is clearly not. It is a slow process for the foreigner to even begin to understand the Filipino culture and can cause multiple problems in relationships if they don't take the time out to learn what these are.

Thank you so much Mira, I just returned from Manila spending 2 weeks with my Filipina girlfriend and her family. We've known each other now for 1 year her family (18 of them) loves me and loves that I am a Christian. I have traveled to see her in Hong Kong twice and now in the Philippines twice. We are going thru the process of getting her a visitors Visa to the USA. What a pain but we are being patient. I have been married twice to very beautiful American women and have been hurt very bad. Without going into detail, mainly infidelity. My Filipina and I were introduced thru church friends so we both have a solid church background. Last week we attended the big El Shaddai service in Manila with 10,000 other Filipinos. I am attracted to the Filipino culture of being a loyal and dedicated spouse. I am trying to learn as much as possible about the Philippine culture as I want her to be happy as that would make me happy as well. Having you open you heart and explain some of the different nuances of your culture really helps me wishing to have a happy marriage with a Filipina. The biggest thing I have found out that raises a red flag is Tampo and how to deal with it. I am an American guy, we like to fix things. If there is a problem, address it and fix it is my culture! That is if I can fix the problems or if it is at all possible. Most people that are married to Filipinas tell me to Ignore it and it will go away in 24-72 hours. I don't think I can deal with Tampo, any ideas??

Hi Mira, wow -- your video is spot on! A couple of things -- one, where are you in Japan? I taught English in Japan for five years. Usually most Japanese English language schools are not keen on hiring Filipinos to teach English so kudos to the school that did! Filipinos are, in fact, excellent English teachers for Japanese in my opinion (although you may not have all the idioms down pat as most westerners do for their home country - USA, Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, etc.). Yes, you got enjoy the KFC rotisserie chicken for Christmas! Someday try an American turkey for Thanksgiving. But yes, some Catholic Filipinos make Christmas into a ten-day affair -- what with getting up before dawn to attend Mass for days before Christmas! You are right about your list of five things -- I was married to a Filipina for many years but we divorced. From the start, there were, of course, cultural differences -- slippers for the bathroom, towel for the upper body and one for the lower body, not spending money on New Year's Day, etc. I know what you mean by discrimination (not first hand) but that my ex-wife used to complain so much about people "backbiting" her! As for money problems, Extended family is very true for Philippines and odd for me since I have a small family. As for American discrimination against me -- I got a lot of "why marry a Filipina? She's poor and only wants a ticket to the States!" Hard too was the expectations that my ex-wife had of me as she expected me to act like a Filipino husband I think but instead acted like an American one.Now, here's the thing -- I'm engaged to another Filipina! But it because I love her and I believe she loves me. I'm more understanding now of Filipino culture and I guess it is what I'm used to and that is why I'm willing to marry a wonderful woman from there. You sound like you have a good head on your shoulders and thank you for putting together your videos. Salamat po.

+California 57 good luck, the one big issue i have had, we both speak english but we use it in very different ways. this has caused some problems, she becomes offended or feels like i am talking to her as if she is stupid or some thing, then she becomes pissed at me. you can look up a word such as pecker, it can mean penis. or a chicken. or a beak of a bird. and in the british language it means a person of courage. or it can be used to describe how a person eats. and ooh god help me one time i said, why you so silly. she looked up the word. she then told me to please stop saying she is stupid. but a year later and lots of work, we got over that kind of issues. ooh if she is serious about being with you. she will test the shit out of you to see what kind of temper you have, so just enjoy the torture when it happens.

I come from a very successful, educated family in the United States and I did not enjoy my stay in there in Manila, Angeles, or Batangas. You, beautiful young lady, are the antithesis of the average single woman in or from the Philippines! Even though I don't have many good things to say about my experiences, I will do my best to support you in any way I can. You are are true testament to the old saying, "Not all people are like that!" I would be very appreciative if we can keep in touch so we can share our travel experiences together through some form of communication; i.e, phone, email, Skype, whatsapp or viber! By the way, i've lived in 6 countries in 12 years just in case you're wondering. I will subscribe to your channel and I wish you all the best with your future endeavors! God Bless you sweetheart! All the best, Ren!
