I feel like culture / habit is also a factor. I grew up in an Asian country and when we go to the beach, we go early morning, go back indoors or seek shade before 11am, have lunch, chat, maybe sleep, then go back out again when the sun is down. When I moved to the US, it’s the opposite. I see a lot of Caucasian Americans go out at 10-11am until 3/4pm. They reapply sunscreens, sure, but they are exposed in the sun longer under stronger UV index. We usually just apply sunscreens once or twice, but we try to avoid the sun at its peak.

Hell, I got a talking to from my manager one day last summer because I didn't show proper appreciation that the assistant manager did the inside work and left the outside work for me to do. Happy Tuesday! Normally I have skin that tans easily! Several years ago when I discovered your site...I decided to avoid being exposed to the sun for too long. I apply several layers on my face before applying my makeup and I try to protect myself as much as possible to keep a more beautiful skin! When I was younger, we didn't talk about the importance of the sun's adverse effects. The problems don't appear right away! But later on at an older age! You have to be aware that if you are exposed to the sun and you don't see sunburns or brown spots for a few years, they are there and they can cause you damage a few years later! Cancer can be there and develop over the years.... take care of yourself!

So much so in fact that 6 months ago my vitamin d levels were so low that I was a few points away from having Rickets. LMAO. my doctor said she had never seen it before and asked me what I’m doing. Six months later with a 3x the recommended dose of vitamin d every day I am finally in the safe zone. I simply refuse to sit in the sun for any amount of time. It’s comical. And I spend so much time applying and reapplying that I should qualify for some kind of tax break right? Hahaha

Dr. Dray is the best! There's no dermatologist on earth with so much credibility! Her knowledge around skin care is immense and she takes the trouble to explain everything in depth! More power to you. PS: Do Broad-Spectrum sunscreens, while protecting the skin from UVB/UVA, also prevent tanning? Cuz that's not what I've observed real-time. I use SPF50 PA++++ and I'm very mindful about applying the thickest layer possible. I still experience tanning. I try to stay out of the sun and in the shade at every opportunity. Without a sunblock, i would probably tan in under 4 minutes of sun exposure and with sunblock on, in under 20 min. I'm an Indian.

Always Elta MD sunscreens during the day! I’ve started adding spring water to a refillable bottle so that I can mist my face before putting on moisturizer as well (my tap water isn’t the best). @@7thCobweb yes! It will take off pretty much anything, I’ve used it for years. I like it because a lot of rinse off oil cleansers dehydrate me or irritate me but Albolene is very gentle and moisturizing. It will definitely leave a film so I mostly just use it around the eyes, gently wipe off as much as possible, and the second cleanser gets it off okay. Most of the time if I use it on on my whole face its before a shower because it’s easier to get off in the shower. If you use it on your whole face outside of the shower, you’ll want to use a soft warm wet washcloth or makeup eraser to wipe off before your second cleanser. I hope that helps!

Thankfully we have consumer reports that test which sunscreens do and dont work, and regulations are coming soon. Make sure your sunscreen actually meets the SPF rating and is broad spectrum, depending on the country its made it could be useless.

Hi, I have a few questions about sunscreens. Some sunscreens are marketed for wet skin ("can be applied on wet skin"). Is it only a marketing argument (and any sunscreen can be applied to wet skin and be effective) or do you really need a specific formulation for sunscreen to work when applied on wet skin or with wet hands? The ㏗ of most sunscreens seems unknown even though we are supposed to apply and reapply sunscreen everyday and that a ㏗ matching the skin is better to maintain a "healthy" and good looking skin. I guess formulating a sunscreen is already difficult enough so brands don't necedsarly focus on the ㏗ to match the skin, especially if some of the active ingredients actually require a ㏗ that does not match the skin to be effective which might be possible right? Have you tried to determine the ㏗ of a sunscreen? If so what did you find? Do you know the ㏗ that some of the most common UV filters require to be effective? Do you know some brands that communicate about the ㏗ of their sunscreens? Obviously it isnt the most important thing but I am curious. Thanks in advance.
@moisdawg2 жыл бұрын
all sunscreens are formulated so that they form that protective film on the surface of the skin, and putting them on wet skin is going to interrupt that process. I've never heard of a wet skin sunscreen and frankly I would avoid any that claim to be that way. Along the same vein, I'd assume the pH of sunscreens must be around the same pH of the skin if they are meant to sit on top of the skin.

One question I've always had: How do clouds impact UV rays? I know I feel like I'm getting less sun exposure on overcast days, but is that true? Is there any difference in UV A and B penetration through cloud cover? Thank you!
@Momofukudoodoowindu2 жыл бұрын
You have to look at clouds as an inconsistent unpredictable sheet of light refraction. It bounces off light and sends it back into the higher atmosphere - or can bounce them off sideways/downwards at randomized angles in a cyclical fashion towards xyz, including people. Light rays ultimately still gets thru.

So so true to everything Dr Dray says. I used to hate wearing sunscreen, found them sticky and the shine, ugly. Then I got melasma 😪, and I started following Dr Dray and all her advice incl using sunscreen religiously even indoors. My skin complexion has since improved dramatically. Sure, the damn melasma are still there, but they are far lighter. Now when I'm out, not only I use sunscreen but also a UV protective fabric umbrella and I always try to walk under the shade of buildings (not difficult in where I come from as we're a concrete jungle). I even become a strong advocate for sunscreen and preach to my mum and all my friends about the importance of using it before it's too late!

I dont want to jinx myself but I think I'm one of the few people who puts on TOO much sunscreen lmao I go way thick but it sucks cause I also have that habit with the rest of my skin care :(

I wonder what the comparison burning/tanning is to precovid. I think the big increase compared to 2020 is because people weren’t going outside much then.

Yes, or just sheer euphoria of finally being able to go outside so that people overdid it

I live on an acre outside of town so I was outside more during Covid than before.

A lot of good reminders as we head into summer... I'm pretty sun-aware, as a fair skinned redhead who burns just thinking about the sun, and I even learned a couple things I didn't know. Well worth the watch!

I remember the baby oil thing, my Mom would use that and her sisters. Thanks for this video. Dr. Dray.

Thanks, we can’t have enough information on this topic. Because of you, I wear to the beach a hat with face mask, glasses, and a 50 spf modest swimsuit. And still wear sunscreen. Very sunny 😎 in Florida. I found some sun damage on my skin, very light, but don’t want it to get worse.

I love this video. Everytime I tell my fellow south asians or asians about applying sunscreen, they get offended. One lady told me I am proud of dark skin tone. I had to tell her sunscreen isn't about complexion but about protection from skin cancer and skin damage. And other south asians think that since we are wheatish or dark complexion, the sun doesn't harm our skin. So much misinformation. I keep sharing Dr Dray's sunscreen videos on my whatsapp stories.

It should be mandatory for sunscreen to be broad spectrum! As a side note... I have another reason to move to a secluded forest 😆

Dr Dray can you please do a video responding to the popular Reddit post “debunking the myth that 80-90% of skin aging is caused by UV”?

But it’s true
@jesseshaver22622 жыл бұрын
@@universe25.x what’s true? That it’s a myth? Perhaps, but I’d rather hear it from a dermatologist than a random redditor who’s not as knowledgeable on the subject. I never said it was true or untrue.
