I will say this because I’m a mechanic with 50+ years in the industry. Driving in city traffic with long wait times at each light I shift my automatic transmissions into neutral position so the transmission will free wheel and flush oil through the clutches and bands then right before the light changes I shift back into the drive position while the hole time my foot is on the brake pedal. This method speeds up the rotational shaft speed of the transmission- in turn speeds up the transmission oil pump that speeds up oil flow through the transmission to keep clean fluid running through your transmission and help lower transmission fluid temperature lower that helps keep are the parts in your transmission cooler . It also helps your engine last longer because your engine is idling under load at the stop light at low rpm for up to 1.5 minutes. A lot of parts in a engine are lubricated by secondary oil splash off and at idle rpm your oil system pressure is low and which diminishes oil splash . So that’s way I always let my engine and transmission free wheel in neutral at stop lights.

Another good one is that when you are reversing, make sure to come to a complete stop before shifting in to drive, and the same thing goes for the other way around, if you are driving forward, make sure to come to a complete stop before shifting in to reverse, not doing so puts a lot of extra wear on the gears in your transmission and will make it go bad a lot sooner than it should. It drives me crazy when I'm driving with someone and they do that. I've seen people going like 5 mph in reverse and just slamming it in to drive, it makes me cringe every time and surprises me that the transmission doesn't just fall out of the bottom of the car.
