My advice to anyone wanting to go into law enforcement is always have a backup plan. Have money saved up and a second career or job you could transition into if you get to the point you want to leave. Running from something isn't always a bad thing. It often motivates us to make changes. If the thing you are trying to escape from doesn't appear it will change anytime soon and you are miserable, hop off and pull the proverbial parachute. There are very few things in life worse than being stuck in a job that makes you miserable, steals your health and is toxic. Life is too short to be miserable.

Couldn’t agree more that life is too short for you to settle for something, particularly a job you don’t like anymore. Thanks for your input

I was about to leave in ‘78 at the 10 year mark when I finally made sergeant. It was a big change and set the course for future moves up the ladder until I retired as a captain. Along the way I got my MBA that was a big help in securing a senior Federal job at USDOJ.

I'm doing the opposite. I'm 40 and trying to get into law enforcement. Waiting on my background investigation to finish

Outstanding!! 👏 Have you seen this video I made about entering later in life than the average age: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJKueouNadJqeJY Not saying you’re old HAHA, because we aren’t. I’m 40 as well.

Such a good point! Are you running to or running from something? I’m asking myself that now. I just retired after 2 decades. 3 months away and I miss it.

Thanks for watching! I’m 2 years out and still miss it but knew when I left that it was because family first and I wouldn’t be able to do what I am doing now if I was still working at the PD. It is a challenge missing it though, but all the more reason to pursue the next opportunity if getting back in is not in the cards.

Thank you for reminding me that this isn’t “all that I know”. After 10 years I’m coming to the conclusion that I need a more traditional schedule for the health of my family. However I’m looking for a direction that LE might be a good fit. Do you have a list or know some good articles about good career fits for former LE?

Right decision to put the health of your family as top priority. Not always easy, but right. Each family’s situation is different. Indeed had a recent article about jobs after LE. You also gave me a video idea! www.indeed.com/career-advice/finding-a-job/jobs-for-police-officers
