Thanks I like the wide roller/bucket. I never thought about saturating the roller till it sounds different and laying on so much paint at first. Also the extension pole is great so you don’t need a ladder! I once was paid to do a master bath that was complex with different walls and mirrors/lights/bathtub/shower and toilet to go around and I had to use this primer and then paint it and it was tough I worked my ass off and thought I did pretty good but I should have cleaned it up better and rescrewed in All the appliances. So the guy got pissed I didn’t do that. I did good in the rest of the house touching up stuff but the guy said I needed a little more training bc the guy didn’t want to pay me for the master bath. Ah well practice makes perfect. Tape is your friend and I should have known to clean up better and be courteous and reassemble the appliances. Thanks for the video!

Awesome tips, I've been a residential painter for 22 years now, I use 18inch rollers also all the time, I use 9 's and weenie rollers to but for production and minimizing lap marks, roller lines, I use the 18. I always start in one corner, I usually start left to right, I make sure I de- lint my roller first, I use high adhesive tape, unroll some, step on the free end , hold the roll in my hand and roll my roller up and down the tape, this ensures your walls won't be contaminated. Anyway, I dip my roller for a few minutes to make sure it's soaked a roll it back and forth so I don't see any more dry nap voids, when I'm rolling walls, I do letter W 's to distribute it, I keep dipping and get alot of paint on the wall, I distribute it and will go to the left where I began and start laying it off but I put more twisting pressure on the right side so I'm picking up my previous line if there's any, I intentionally leave a heavy heart line where I left off cause when I do this same process continuing down the wall you'll forget where you left off and you do not want to go back and start disturbing parts that are drying so this technique shows you where you left off to lay off back into. Thank you! I've painted quite a few times over the years, just small jobs and my own places. Working in the paint dept at Home Depot and trying to learn what I can; just started taking real (small) jobs, and wow do I have a lot to learn. Worked with yellow (white base) SuperPaint today, absolutely awful, your video confirmed that it wasn't entirely my lack of skill. Its raining here in Jersey, primer coat and the first topcoat are slowly drying, gotta go back tomorrow to finish the job.

I can’t remember my first boss “don’t dry roll.” He’s right it’s supposed to be wet. You only know what you only know and I only knew what my dad showed me when I worked with him and so for years, he wouldn’t spray and we had to use 9 inch rollers on everything. Bought everything from Home Depot . When I went to my first commercial painter and found out about 18 inch rollers. It changed my life. You couldn’t pay me to pay any paint anything with less than an 18” roller.

Back when I was still painting, I used 9" inch ball bearing roller handles, with a good quality 3/8" nap cover. I started, as you do, at the top, and work down. I painted in "W's" double-u's. After about a 1 to 1-1/2 feet, I would back roll it to take out the roller lines. When it dried, it looked like it was sprayed on. I really like the roller setup you are using. I don't know if they were available back in the 90's and early 2000's. If they were, I sure missed the boat!

When you load the roller, you put multiple coats in one area. Does that show on the wall when everything is dry?

Yes, especially in rooms that are well lit and/or if it's a semi gloss or high gloss paint you're using, it will look blotchy...I still remember my first year at painting for a living, I was always in sh*t for putting too much paint on the wall and to make sure I backrolled it off.

Yo bro.. a 14 inch roller is actually the best to use as well as the 18. Here in denver the preferred roller is the 14 in. . It s easier to bankroll and gets in the corners tighter for a solid Coate

I watched a few of the other youtube painting instruction videos and I have to say yours covers a better detail on "cutting" and really going over both walls and ceiling techniques using tools that make work smarter and not harder. Thanks. Question- Is it better to paint the ceiling first then the walls or walls then ceilings? I would think painting from the top and working down, but better to ask then to find out the hard way. Unload once at the top part of the wall, unload a second time at the lower part of the wall then blend the two. Once you have done 2 widths of a roller, don't reload your roller, clean the grain by dry rolling without applying any pressure from up to down, then load again and just keep moving like that. No matter how "new" you are to painting, you can't do anything else than a professional job. That's how I teach my apprentices to do it, and they always do perfect walls after the very first one they do. It's a simple technique and the most important thing is to always have a wet wall (as in no rolling if it's not drenched in paint other than to clean the grain every 2 lengths)

When I'm rolling, it usually makes a different texture at the spots where i pull the roller off of the wall or change directions. This is at the top and bottom of the stripe. do you do anything that i'm not seeing or is there something that I need to do differently? I have seen where some people say to spin the roller a little off of the wall, it doesn't look like you are doing that. Also how do you handle cut ins at the bottom of a wall with no baseboard in a room with hardwood floors?

I question many things you do as it is so different from the way I was taught like rolling a thick square on a wall you're not even rolling yet. I know it's only first coat but it might as well be done on the wall you're about to roll out. And the production style of one cut in two coats rolled is also puzzling

I would agree with you with most things until a few weeks ago. Change my mind after I painted with some Puerto Ricans recently. I pretty much painted like the Idaho painter before. They paint different and it is faster. Almost no brushes. They use edgers and they run them perfectly. They use a giant 18 in nap. Biggest damn nap I've ever seen. It took a quarter of the time. Got me rethinking things.

Finished the ceiling job with the 14 inch roller, which took a little getting used to, but once I got it, I couldn't imagine doing it with a smaller roller. Lots of prep work as it was peeling all around the edges and had to patch some areas that had previous water damage. Cleaned it with TSP, couple of clean water rinses, sanded, primed, sanded again and two coats of ceiling paint. After the first coat of ceiling paint, I told the homeowner I'd be back the next day to do an additional and final coat. He asked if I really needed to do a second coat because he couldn't see any areas that I chipped and patched. The next day after he got home from work and saw the second coat, I got a text from him that said "Wow, what a difference a second coat makes". Ceiling came out great, and they were extremely happy. Thanks for all the tips, especially the larger roller. Just ordered some 18 inch rollers for another job coming up.

Questions: 1)I was told by my first painting mentor that correctly painted trim is painted in oil…(I’m guessing this is not true as I NEVER see anyone else doing it) 2) I use 3/4 nap on everything “no such thing as smooth walls where I’m from” I never have lines on walls…but I’m scared of ceiling white cause I almost always have friggin lines!? Get a hose with a attachment at the end that makes it spray farther and harder etc. I can't think of the name of it. Keep roller skin on frame and spray the roller on it's very edge holding the frame sideways like a blender with the water untill it spins and eventually it'll spin all of the paint off and even spin so fast half the time it'll dry it self off its the best way to clean a roller if u have access to a hose

Hello Chris. I have learned so much from you as I painted my whole exterior this summer using what I learned on your Channel. Now moving to the interior. Quick question, I have scoured your KZbin videos today looking for the paint you recommend for interior. Assuming satin and a Sherwin Williams product, which model of SW paint do you recommend for both rolling and spraying interiors? I have found tons of video where you recommend Eminence for ceilings but nothing on actual SW model for interior walls. Do you recommend cashmere, duration, emerald, other for interior? I tried to find in the video descriptions but you only list the tools used and never the make and model of the coating applied in these videos. Just a suggestion in future videos that you also include the coatings used (Make/Model) in the video description. Thanks so much!

how can you tell if your baseboards that are already painted were primed, fingernail test? and if it turns out they were not primed do I have to strip the baseboards down to Wood?

Do you/ or can let your cut ins at your ceiling, baseboards, or corners dry before you roll the walls? Meaning day 1 I do all my cut ins in my room than come back next day and roll walls?
