Makes it seem like they are desperate and on the verge of layoffs. and when the company is doing well on all metrics and is still making those mistakes and seemingly on the verge of layoffs, it seems like leaders are cutting themselves way too big of checks out of the company funds.

Sumito, I really respect you, man, so don’t take this the wrong way, but I think you’re off base on this one. Just because Marques has made the personal choice of not taking sponsors doesn’t mean he deserves leeway for releasing a glorified photo gallery for $50. The $50 doesn’t make sense for future development because, really… where can this app possibly go? Plenty of reputable reviewing channels (ex: Gamer’s Nexus, Linus Tech Tips, Digital Foundry, etc) do an excellent job producing reasonably reliable tech content while also taking sponsorships. Marques has had plenty of avenues for monetization. He could release LUT’s like Johnny Harris, he could create a techwear/streetwear brand, he could do a Patreon with access to unedited interviews with tech CEO’s. He has prestige and he has capital, the sky is the limit. This app, comparatively, was an unforced error.

Honestly, I think we live in a time when every company is trying to milk as much cash out of us in as many ways as possible. Everything is a subscription, a scam, or both. Always getting less while paying more money. Every swipe of the hand or press of the play button drowns us in ads and everyone wants something from us at every turn. I think people are just tired of it in general. I don’t think it has anything to do with him personally. Maybe people have reacted even worse because it’s him and they didn’t get that from him previously, but I think it’s just overall burnout with constantly being sold to and never getting our moneys worth out of fucking anything anymore. .

This is such an unbiased and fair review - Subbed! At the end of the day: - Dude can definitely afford his own salad, he doesn't need this app to keep his lights on. At this point definitely a bit 'tone-deaf' as you said, considering what you can get for free nowadays (My whole thing is how can a tech reviewer have such low-res wallpapers?! I digress....) - Flip side is, dude has stayed sponsor free and built his empire staying ethical, and if he wants to slang his own products at the start of his (What he know will be a highly-viewed cos it's iphone 16) video, then so be it. He's not forcing you to buy it, he proabably will make one more vid about it to address the backlash, and then I'm guessing any further shilling will be minimal as the dude is smart and isn't gonna try shove this down our throats any more after this so I think this is pretty minor, he absolutely has the right to try shill his own stuff, buy it or don't, you can just skip the ad. It's pricey, but another way of looking at it would be that it's supposed to be a way to support people making the wallpapers. If I could make some actual side money on render composites/wallpapers, that'd be great. I'm not buying it, I use my own photography and artwork for wallpapers on everything, so it's kind of moot. It's pretty funny that people lose their damn minds over someone sharing an "AI generated image" (I'm talking, something that's a composite of multiple prompts/passes along with tons of layers/work to create a solid image) because it's "theft against the artist" but then they'll happily rip an image straight from an artist and set it as a background without thinking about it.

"Don't like, don't use" does not dismiss the criticisms people have levied against Marques and his app. At best, it's a data-harvesting tool that gets you to watch ads for one singular low-resolution JPEG, and at worst, you're paying $50 a year for a data-harvesting tool that gives you higher-resolution JPEGs. It's a predatory practice that Marques would outwardly tear to pieces if he hadn't been peddling the thing, which is pretty hypocritical and shows a lack of care for the audience he's pushing it to. People raise their voices to prevent predatory practices like this. If everyone who was unhappy just kept their heads down and didn't say anything, people who don't know any better are going to spend money on an app that functions the same as tapping "download image." That is why people are angry.
