What do you think it would feel like to celebrate Thanksgiving on an aircraft carrier in the middle of the ocean? Would you enjoy the camaraderie and unique traditions, or miss the comforts of home? Let us know your thoughts below!👇🦃

I was a MS ONUS NASSAU(LHA-4)1983-1987 and USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER(CVN-69) 1991-1994.I can tell the crew would rather be home celebrating with family but we had a job to do.We take care of each other as a second family.

Served on the USS Constellation in the 70's. We got gray hot dogs, rice and beans with warm bug juice on the side. If you worked the flight deck night shift you got the same crappy meal night after night. Good old days.

Not an aircraft carrier (CVN). The ship featured is an amphibious assault ship, with approximately 2000 sailors and Marines onboard while underway. Primary mission to deploy the Marine Expeditionary Unit with their combat cargo and aircraft to conduct ship to shore combat and humanitarian operations.

Yeah, some folks don't *do* turkey or celebrate Thanksgiving...it was my experience that we could always have something different to eat on Thanksgiving if turkey and fixin's weren't our thing. Omelets, Pizza, chicken, hamburgers, you name it. One thing the Navy does is feed seamen well❤

@@jasonmitchell432heard from some of my Navy brothers that *the best* food, arguably, is served on submarines, they had the best cooks, ate meals fit for kings...and I believe them. Just imagine being in a tin can *under* the ocean, no fresh air, no walking or relaxing on the flight deck. Food, suddenly, becomes hyper important 🍽 😋😋😋 I was in aviation, so not seafaring. The chow hall at NAS JAX (VP5 1977-1983) wasn't the best, but it was more than just tolerable, it was pretty darned good...but go to Bermuda or Iceland and wow, the food was fantastic -- and plentiful😁 I even once took a whole turkey and a ham back the the barracks, along with all the fixin's because we had a couple crews out sweeping the ocean for Russian subs and they were missing supper. So the cook said, "were closing up, here let me set you up" (I was an aviation storekeeper, so procurement of all manner of things were my specialty and pride) So 4 pies (2 apple and 2 sweet potato), a gallon of mashed potatoes, a gallon of gravy, 2 gallons of salad, a gallon of fresh green beans (not canned!😋), 2 quarts of freshly made cranberry sauce, 40+ biscuits, 2 loaves of soft, fresh white bread (because sandwiches😘😋) a pound of butter...just EVERYthing needed for a Thanksgiving feast for the flight crews, sonar techs and navigator, for two planes, and boy were they surprised and overjoyed to find a feast laid out in the officer's lounge/barracks. Add a trough of beer on ice and it was a memorable Thanksgiving (1982) for all❤🌻☮ Yep, the Navy has some fantastic cooks/chefs...and kinder folks one could never meet. No one went hungry, ever, in my squadron ❤☮ 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

You may have missed the meal being eaten just after the 3:00 mark and groups seated together eating throughout the video. That’s about as good as it gets, since everyone is still working different areas, different shifts. There is no “thanksgiving meal” where everyone stops and eats like they would at grandmother’s house. Instead “the meal” is served over the hours cafeteria-style as crew and airmen come and go.

In their home all these years later Dave makes gourmet dinners for his family and friends Sent his children to school every day with the most envied lunches in the cafeteria from the skills he acquired while serving in the US Navy in 1973.

I've seen both land based, and sea based cooking on a mass scale. I've also seen mass cooking on the civilian side. The comparison isn't even close. On the civilian side you can put extra square footage and personnel to work for you. Both are limited on the military side, especially at sea. Sure, the civilian food is generally better, but then they don't have to work with one hand tied behind their backs. And the civilian side gets better quality supplies. I've seen the food the military gets before it gets cooked. Quite a lot of it is labeled "for institutional use only." That basically means prison food. So while you might be getting a steak dinner, it's not steak house steak, it's closer to prison steak. That being said, the food i had on board a naval vessel was not bad at all, and was quite often excellent. Which is a real testament when you take the quality of the ingredients into consideration! ^-^

In common with most living in the free world, we find the US to be deeply dysfunctional and have never understood what “thanksgiving” is meant to be about other than a time when US families overeat and argue endlessly. That US Americans seem to constantly thank their military personnel for simply doing their jobs, is something that most of the world regards as weird, but it seems that thanksgiving celebrates them being together and away from home. Turkey seems a weird choice to be eaten almost universally in the US. A dry and tasteless bird, drenched in chemicals of all sorts that are banned in Europe, it’s a dish our family would never consider eating or serving to others. I have restaurants and gastropubs in several European countries and would never consider allowing turkey to appear on any menu.
