Dear 50s Kid, I realize you have a disclaimer that says your videos are for entertainment only but I thought you should know that I am very greatful to you. I’m a single mom with a very tight budget (as in ramen daily) type of budget. I have a 2003 BMW 325i which’s getting old just like me and if (sadly) regularly has something go wrong with it. Just last night I drove out to pick up my son and my power steering pump died. Car started shaking when turning the steering wheel, no power steering and I freaked! I watched several videos trying to determine the cause and once I decided it was the pump, I watched this video on its replacement. This morning we walked to the store, picked up the pump, fluid and clamp. A few hours and a terribly sore back later, my car is fixed. Just so you know, this is not the first time your videos have saved my car. 😁😁😁😁😁

If you don't use a washer the (to long) bolt will hit the back of the housing and will strip or fell like its stripped when it pops backward one thread. Where the washer goes during repair is unknown..lol (The repair was successful and made a unbelievable difference LF20 LUK)

I want to add that if you have the LF20 pump you're going to need a crawfoot extension to get the high pressure line off. Also, it's a hell of a lot easier to get to the banjo bolts from the top if you take off the CAI and surrounding intake boots. Also, if you're doing this job it is recommended you replace the power steering filter/reservoir as well and flush the old power steering fluid out so you don't contaminate your system and for it to last, otherwise you're gonna be running old fluid and you may shorten the life of all that work and money spent. Also, if you're doing this job, please replace the banjo bolt o-rings otherwise you're taking a chance on your system leaking power steering fluid. I should know, I just did this job not long ago after having the same issue as the 50s kid.

Any chance you have the link to the actual bolt? I am missing this bolt as well and thought it originally was one of the oil filter housing gasket but I have tested all three sizes and they do not fit in properly.
@kukusnest652 жыл бұрын
First of all just want to say thanks for all the amazing videos, you truly have helped me immensly and I know lots of others. Couple things I ran into on mine that threw me a bit and I'm not sure if mine was some weird anamoly or due to a bolt head being sheared off. When I got to the step of actually removing the pump I saw only the 13mm bolt head on the left side. There was no bold head on the right side. Looking from the back I could see what appears to be an inverted torx nut? Are some built like this or would that be a way to fix the bolt head being sheared off? Reason I ask is according to a online step by step article you remove the back bracket bolt and then remove the right side of the front bracket bolt from the rear-but it was a regular 13mm bolt head not an inverted torx. Did not have any inverted torx sockets so I just removed the pump by taking out the 3 torx bolts on front, and since the shaft was completely sheared off pump was very easy to get out. I sure hope the shaft on this new pump is more substantial, OEM immer was out of the AE pump that is supposed to be beefier. Also my back bracket was the type with only one bolt on to the pump, is that because mine is an LF 20, back bracket is different on LF 30? I am definitely gonna swap my hydraulic tensioner for the manual one also. Thanks again, it worked out great!

For my car, suddenly it was extremely hard to steer and park and on turning it makes a knocking noise(not too loud). Initial 0-25mph pickup makes a louder noise than usual. After removing the belt and jiggling the pump shaft by hand makes a small clicking noise but it doesn't move in or out, so doesn't look like it is broken. Not sure if fluid flow is choked or any other thing to diagnose and how?

I checked more, pump is fine and creates pressure when running. When pump and pressure hose is disconnected all fluid comes out of pump and nothing from the pressure hose. On moving steering some fluid goes back to the reservoir and comes out of pump. Could pressure hose be bad or rack-n-pinion be bad?

Got a question for you 50’s. I replaced my power steering pump, started my car, and it sucked the fluid right down straight away with a lot of air. Btw, I did all the things your supposed to do before starting it. Anyway, created a huge air pocket somewhere in my system and I can’t get rid of it. My power steering isn’t working and there is a lot of tiny air bubbles I can see in the reservoir. It also kinda cherns in the filling tank when the car is started so I know the pump is doing something. How can I go about getting this huge air pocket out of the system?

You probably have the LF20. The shaft shears off on those. If you take your belt off and just try pulling the pulley out from the pump--you will know right away if it's broken off. Don't pull it all the way out or your fluid will leak all over the place.

Do you have to pull the fan, I had mine replaced with a salvage pump only 3 months ago, I'm gonna do it myself this time, and should I get a lf30?
@50sKid3 жыл бұрын
Yes you have to pull the pan. If you change pumps you have to change the pressure line as well

I have a 2002 330ci, should I get an lf20 or lf30?

Did you take off the fan and shroud

I too just completed this - LF 20 - replacement, mainly due to overall stiff steering. The OEM shaft was intact, ...maybe the vanes had shared on the previous unit? Unfortunately, after the replacement, the steering is stiff as if it was only partially power-assisted. ' any thoughts?

Blockage in the lines maybe? You could pull them off and blow them out with compressed air.

How many miles are on your 330? how is that thing running now considering you replaced everything? I'm in the process of doing the same.

Had the LF30 already in my 330i , and when I removed it shards of the shaft came out of the inlet line. I guess they're not meant to last either

Im actually experiencing and vibration and noise while parked, just today when turning steering L to R. I describe it as a force feedback type of noise and vibration. In aviation terms it's like a shaker stick sensation. Is this similar to what you experienced when the pump started to fail?
@50sKid7 жыл бұрын
If it happens when you turn the steering wheel, there's basically nothing else it could be besides the power steering pump

I have a noise coming from the pulley but when I tried to replace it, its a different kind of pump (mine just have a Bolt in the middle) do you know if there is a way to replace it?
@50sKid7 жыл бұрын
Are you sure you're not talking about the a/c compressor?
@franciscosalazar1607 жыл бұрын
50sKid I am pretty sure it was the steering pump, from a front view is at RH side in the bottom, and when I remove the line hydraulic come from it.

+50sKid your my go to for videos,always informative and well done .I have a question so i had my power steering replaced, but since day one the pump has been groaning loud and seems to be harder to steer at times.Its a 2004 330ci ZHP and i want sure if i should put CHF or ATF its not on the cap. I went with a euro approved power steering fluid that is approved for my car because a mechanic told me too.Not sure if he was wrong and its the wrong fluid or i was sold a bad pump.Is there a way to check the only thing i can think of is flush it and try ATF.Ive check online,check manual and called BMW i got no were.Another mechanic said he thought he seen micro flakes in the reservoir tank. Thanks again i just replaced my fuel filter and fuel pump from your videos.
@50sKid7 жыл бұрын
They take ATF, so just your basic dexron. If someone saw flakes in the reservoir that doesn't sound good for the new pump. It may be damaged.
