I've never seen a 4020 Gas tractor. I picked up on it when I saw the spark plugs. I thought they were all diesels. You learn something every day. xxxxxxx
@Ray56z9 ай бұрын
They were popular too. Mid '60s a lot hadn't switched to diesel equipment, still wanted everything gas.We had a couple gas to go with the several diesel, nearly identical in the work they did, just slightly more maintenance with gas due to plugs, points, less hours for the oil. As a boy then I was one of those that worked everything to it's limit. Something was said to be a 5 bottom, I had a 6-7 on it. 4020 gas is the reason I got an uncle to switch to Deere from Case, he was the odd one out in the family farming business. Always bragging his 930 or 1030 could outdo any Deere below one of the center swivels. Told him to pick a Deere he wanted to put the 930 against. He picked out the 4020 diesel and I told nah, I'd do it with the gas. He backed to his 6 bottom, told him to pull to the 8. It pulled it but it worked harder than it should be. I hooked and down the field I went, a 11 year old full of piss and vinegar just out did my 6'7" 300lb uncle, and he couldn't whup me for it.

was the exhaust vertical pipe right in your face irritating, seems like noise and fumes might get the best of all of us on that thing. What was your opinion of the design?
@Ray56z9 ай бұрын
@@dabneyoffermein595 Have you noticed the position of nearly every tractors' exhaust? Very seldom were you going directly in the wind, and even then the exhaust pressure pushed everything 5-8 feet above your head unless you were putting around a barn lot. Living on a very large row crop, cattle, hay farm I doubt if I went 30 days a year without sitting on a tractor or powered equipment, don't even remember having fumes in my face.

Wonderful old 4020. You might want to reconsider replacing the oil bath air filter with a paper filter. The oil bath filter is a great piece to filter air into the engine.
@anarac444510 ай бұрын
Just to add my 2 cents.....the battery should have a hold down clamp becuase a lead acid battery will have are reduced life if allowed to bounce around. Also consider adding a roll-over frame as it seems from the videos at least the tractor has a high center of gravity.

When I lived in Jersey, I used to take a run up to Lancaster County in PA to the tractor pulls. I've seen a few of these up there. My favorite was an old one longer. The rebuild was fantastic. It got me started rebuilding old Ford tractors. The first was a 7N, then did an 801 power Master. The chances of this turning over is very remote on their farm. It has one heck of a tire span
@Ray56z9 ай бұрын
Where's the hill on their place to turn it over on? Fluid tires make it hard to do even if you want with the width. We used them on river bottoms and on the ridge hills off the bottoms.

Awesome that you got it all working! Box scraper needs some weight over the blade, maybe some railroad iron painted the same color? And the battery holder needs a proper hold down for the battery. 2 pieces of 1/4" all thread and a 1"x3/4" piece of solid wood could do it....👍👍

My first big field job, when I was about 11 - 12 years old (in the mid-70s), was to mow one of our 100 acre fields with a JD 4020 and a 5 or 6 foot wide mower. It was a real sense of accomplishment. It seemed like I drove around that field for at least 2-1/2 days before I could see any progress. That was my training tractor, before moving up to the Caterpillar D4 and the Case 2670. I'm 59 now.

Did you know that due to the high demand for the tractor, at one point production of the 4020 accounted for 50 per cent of tractor output at John Deere's Waterloo plant in Iowa?
