@rovacon Installation of the lower hose requires removal of the fan shroud. The first time is a pain but not that bad once you have done it. It is easier if you take the radiator top mounts loose so you can lean the radiator forward in its spot. This will make more room. You have to be very careful of the coolant return line going to the top of the radiator, it is very easy to break and will require radiator replacement if broken.

You would be correct. but you do the test with a scanner that is also reading EOT and ECT to determine the delta. You can get a pressure spike in the coolant system with just an Oil cooler blockage but you will not have a boil over situation when you loosen the cap. No coolant will gush just pressure release. Good question.

I only recommend the Gold coolant from Ford to keep all the internet chatter down about what I recommend. I acknowledge that there are many compatible coolants for the Ford PowerStroke but I have never tested any of them. Flush your coolant system and use a coolant filter.

Well, I've had coolant puking out. I pulled my EGR valve and I see moisture in the intake. I hope its just the cooler that has failed and not head gaskets yet.(Obviously its kind of hard to tell if they have failed now). I have never had any coolant gush out of the degas bottle while loosening the cap though. Thanks again, Stefan

The good news is, I flushed, installed a coolant filter kit and filled with Ford Gold coolant/distilled water. The bad news is, I flushed with tap water thinking that it would all drain out if I waited a while. On refill, I put in the gallons of coolant, followed by one gallon of distilled water. So at least a couple gallons of tap water remaining in the system.

Just finished your flush to my 6.0. Ford didn't have straight coolant but did have 50/50 mix. All I could get in was 14 quarts, calls for 26 quarts. Guess I still had 12 quarts of tap/distilled water left in the block. Now I have to find some straight stuff to keep my engine from freezing up. Sort of throws out not using tap water wish you would have brought out the drain plugs on the block, I won't trust your wisdom again!
@chodickson
@chodickson 10 жыл бұрын
You don't have to trust his wisdom, but don't fault him for not following his coolant flush recipe that he clearly describes. You substituted the main ingredient but didn't consider how that would change the final outcome. To reassure those of you doing the flush according to this video, when you drain the system each of the 3 times into a suitable container, only about 15 or so quarts come out. Bill's explanation in the final steps to put in 3 gallons of VC-7-B coolant and "refill it to the top with distilled water" takes into account the distilled water still in the engine thus giving you the final required 50/50 mix.

Mr. Hewitt, I have been doing maintenance for an ambulance fleet. Ive been using your cooling system flush method for years. Through my local dealer I was recommended to go to a Ford Training Seminar. They said to correctly flush the cooling system use Ford Motorcraft VC-9 Iron cleaner. How do you feel about that cleaner? I have also heard from other fleet mechanics that they flush with some CLR. I dont use CLR but would that be safe? I have used the VC-9 a few times and not noticed much.

So, here's how I got the wrong idea. When you mentioned "now you've removed 98% of the coolant from your system." I took that to mean 98% of the combined liquid. When you were actually trying to let us know that the 3 gallons of remaining liquid in the block was diluted enough to go into the storm drain

Bill, when doing the coolant pressure test should it be done on a cool engine or one that is up to operating temp? Reason I ask is if the truck is at operating temp wont the EGR gases boil the coolant if the oil cooler is plugged? I dont have a failed EGR cooler yet, but I'm suspecting that the oil cooler is plugged, so I'm going to replace it. I was just going to try to check the head gaskets before hand and order it all if needed before I dig in. Thanks, Stefan

Gold coolant is crap imo. Triax is the best phosphate/nitrate/silicate free coolant, good for 1 MILLION miles, 8 years, 20,000 hours. 10 years in a mild climate if you ask me. Any good CAT rated EC-1 will be better than the Ford gold. I also installed a valve in the engine block that I've had in there for 8 years, it still works perfectly. I took the stock plug out and replaced it with the brass valve which is spring loaded so it cannot accidently open. This makes it easy to drain the block in no time, so you can flush fewer times with the same result

never use cat elc in a powerstroke, it uses Sodium 2-ethylhexanoate as an inhibitor, just like dex cool did. DEX-COOL specifically has caused controversy. Litigation has linked it with intake manifold gasket failures in General Motors' (GM's) 3.1L and 3.4L engines, and with other failures in 3.8L and 4.3L engines. One of the anti-corrosion components presented as sodium or potassium 2-ethylhexanoate and ethylhexanoic acid is incompatible with nylon 6,6 and silicone rubber, and is a known plasticizer. Class action lawsuits were registered in several states of the US, and in Canada,[20] to address some of these claims. The first of these to reach a decision was in Missouri, where a settlement was announced early in December 2007.[21] Late in March 2008, GM agreed to compensate complainants in the remaining 49 states.[22] GM (Motors Liquidation Company) filed for bankruptcy in 2009, which tied up the outstanding claims until a court determines who gets paid
@tracnunya7165
@tracnunya7165 4 жыл бұрын
the Sodium 2-ethylhexanoate is the ONLY added chemical in cat versus ford gold that makes the cat EXTENDED LIFE learn to read msds sheets, instead of relying on internet forum hype, the proof is in the required federal data disclosures. the only other difference between ford and cat is cats coolant has cleaner Ethylene Glycol as it has no 2,2'-Oxydiethanol which is a by product of making Ethylene Glycol, so either cat uses a cleaner Ethylene Glycol or just fails to list 2,2'-Oxydiethanol as it is a known by product of manufacture of Ethylene Glycol in any case, the ONLY difference between the two is the use of an inhibitor to extend product life that is know to attack certain gaskets and gasket sealants, probably why ford doesnt use it
