Curious loading, I feel like subsonic loads for rifle cartridges are an overlooked thing. For some reason I feel like .308 subs are quieter than .300 BLK, and seem a bit more cool. Be interesting to see if there was a bullet in 6 or 6.5 that worked well in gel at those speeds

There's a reason it wasn't- in full power loads the heavier 140 and 147gr bullets don't seat as far into the case, taking up capacity, but still maintain the same OAL for semiautos. 6.5x51 or 260remington does exist , great cartridge up to 123gr and actually a little faster than 6.5CM ,but 6.5CM is more efficient and easier to load heavier .

I think it was born of competition, shooting precision matches where they’re shooting a lot, at several targets, at several stations both known and unknown distance targets… I think one of the people that talked it up was basically saying it has enough gas I. The tank to do what’s needed, but less recoil than several of the other calibers at the time like .308/7.62x51, easy to source projectiles that had a higher BC, etc. etc. so it just left the shooter less fatigued over the course of the match and outperformed the .30cals that were being used since energy on target didn’t matter for what they’re doing and in some cases performance was better.. I don’t recall if it was more in wind deflection or drop but that’s what I remember….. could be mistaken 🤷‍♂️ I don’t shoot in those sorts of matches though and so for me as a hunter or interested at all in “prepping”, eh…. It’s never interested me, rather have a .300WM if I need to take a long range shot, or .308 if I don’t need to take such a long range shot but want something more than 5.56x45
