PPIs also deplete B12. If you take methylcobalamin then you need to supplement adenysocobalamin because, while hydroxo or cyanocobalamin break down to methyl and adenyso, methyl is already broken down and doesn't do much good without the adensyo. Methyl is also expensive and doesn't last in the body long as long as hydroxo or cyano. Not everyone can tolerate methyl (I can't). Cyanocobalamin is the only form of b12 I can tolerate and while it is synthetic it is still effective. I have Pernicious Anemia (diagnosed 7 years ago) and have done a lot of research on causes and treatment of B12 def. I think it is irresponsible of you to only recommend methylcobalamin when that treatment is not effective for everyone.

My Dad was diabetic and on Metformin for years. Long story short, he was diagnosed with dementia by his family doctor. Ended up in rehab after a fall and found out his vitamin B12 was critically low. He started receiving B12 injections and seemed so much better. Unfortunately when his B level came up, they stopped the injection and he went straight back down hill and a few weeks later died from a stroke. If any loved ones seem to have dementia symptoms, B12 levels should be checked often.

@S J I literally feel like I am dying! I have been terribly sick for 2 1/2 years, it started in early 2021 with numbness and tingling in my left foot. The symptoms have gotten steadily worse and worse, to the point where I have numbness, tingling, pain in both feet and legs, muscle weakness, and extreme daily fatigue. When the fatigue hits me, I feel like I have just been hit by a truck, like the life has been sucked out of me. I have been to so many drs (including naturopaths, chiropractors, as well as regular allopathic drs), but supposedly they can't find anything wrong. I have had multiple b12 blood tests, and they are "normal". I don't care what the tests say, I think I have a serious b12 deficiency, and I am taking matters into my own hands, because I don't want to die. I ordered injectable b12, and I am planning to inject it every day for 3 months.If it doesn't help, I guess I don't know what else to do, and I will probably die.

Dr. Berg, thank you for the wonderful medical and holistic education you bestow on the world. As I am aging, just turned 50 in January, I am becoming more aware of how little traditional pharmaceutical medicine helps and how much quality supplements and food make a difference in one’s overall health. It’s quite astonishing how I can take a pill for something, it doesn’t fix the problem and adds another problem. Lol. However, I can eat or drink certain whole foods and supplements, and the original problem subsides significantly or goes away completely. For 10yr I’ve slept most of the day from being so exhausted. I’m shook at how much better I feel after just one shot. Maybe my leg will get better. I’m seeing a neurosurgeon thinking it’s from my back! Wow. But….doc prescribed metaformin. Why on earth! Sigh maybe I need to talk further. My 14yr old has small red blood cells too. @Helen Keto I'm sure many do and don't realize it! But supplementing wont help if you've lost something in your stomach called Intrinsic Factor which allows your body to properly use it. Alcohol can cause this particular loss. If you don't have it, oral supplementation of b12 will be largely ineffective.
@TRguy6414 күн бұрын
@@persephone248 Correct, and that's what had occurred to me, I had severe gastritis that caused the loss of the Intrinsic factor, thus the B12 deficiency, though took until I was nearly in my literal grave to get the diagnosis, otherwise for eight long torturous years I had been nothing but laughed at and mocked by one doctor after the other!

I watched many of your useful videos, as I watched many others, and the most important thing I concluded is that all diseases that afflict us begin in the stomach, specifically indigestion. If we had preserved our stomach, we would not have reached these health problems. So the Arab physician Al-Harith bin Kalda was right when he said the stomach is the home of the disease and diet is the head of the medicine.
@ma0236700 Жыл бұрын
Besides, B12 needs to bind with different proteins for different functions in the body. When B12 is first ingested and enters the stomach, it binds to proteins called R-proteins that protect it from being destroyed by stomach acid. Once it reaches the small intestine, it is released from the R-proteins and binds to intrinsic factor (IF), a protein secreted by the stomach lining. This B12-IF complex is then absorbed into the bloodstream and transported to the liver, where it is stored. When the body needs B12 for cellular functions, it is released from the liver and binds to a protein called transcobalamin II (TCII), which transports it to the cells that need it throughout the body. Once inside the cells, B12 is used to help with processes such as DNA synthesis and nerve function. Therefore, different proteins help B12 to be transported and utilized by the body in different ways.

Dear Dr. Berg. Four years ago I discovered I was deeply anemic. The blood exam gave 5.4 hemoglobin and deep deficiencies in every other blood cell types. My doctor instructed me to take a B12 exam, which resulted in not detectable. I started a supplement regime with vitamin shots and sublingual pills. My blood started to get regular and today I have above 15 hemoglobin. I suspected that the cause was my then intake of antacid sodium bicarbonate, which you now help me to confirm. My concern is how damaged my nervous system is because of this anemia. Is there any information on the subject accessible? Thanks! Luis

That covers everything about B12 not popularly known. However, if you lack the intrinsic factor in the stomach B12 by mouth is no good and 3 monthly injections are needed for B12 to go straight into the bloodstream. I'd be very interested in your take on this - whether it's enough and whether there's a natural alternative since as you say synthetic versions of vitamins aren't as good.
@binathere2574 Жыл бұрын
Injections do not go into the bloodstream. It is injected into the muscle then it is absorbed into the cells. I'm on daily injections of hydroxycobalamin for 5 months now. I am a different person. I'm fairly sure it's the identical molecule to anything natural therefore my 100 trillion cells are recognising it.

My son and I developed a B12 deficiency - along with some other health problems, including in my son's case, pernicius anemia - when we lived in a rural setting where agricultural drift of checmicals sprayed over crops was a constant. When we moved away from that area all the other health problems cleared up, but our B12 deficiency remained. My son has to take injections of B12 and I have to take a daily liquid suppliment of same, despite our having diets high in B12 foods. I wonder if any studies have been done looking into agricultural drift as a source of B12 deficiency?.

Meat eaters can be deficit in B12 also. B12 is a microbe obtained from the soil and cows who graze usually eat huge chunks of dirt with their grass. The cow meat you get in the grocery store was very likely factory farmed and lived on a diet of corn and grain. So no B12. So just because you eat meat doesn't mean you shouldn't get your B12 checked.

Thanks for the great videos. In case Dr Berg reads this or one of his people, I'd like to suggest subjects for future content. I've experienced metabolic problems all at once in my early 40s. After talking to others who also have gulten sensitivity they had the same issue; starting in their early 40's. A delayed type scenario. Weird isn't it. My route cause seems to be auto immunity from some kind of genetic mutation. My immune system has munched my thyroid giving me hypothydrodism, I have b12 deficiency, irritable bowel syndrome with conspitation of all things, and I get lupus type symtoms on my skin from caffeine and dairy. I can't eat gluten and of all things I can't drink alcohol..... not good. I know it's a lot of details but I'd love to know if more people have issues in their early 40s and what the genetic causes of this could be.

I am coeliac, found out about 12 years ago. Though probably long before then. This means I have autoimmune disorders. I have hypothyroid for about 35 years. I am on a path for reduction of levothyroxin. I went down from 175mcg to 100mcg in 2019. Now trying again. The reduction in 2019 was with use of supplements and up to 72 hours fasting. I have not been able to fast since. I am retracing all the supplements I had before. If course no gluten or soya. In 2019, I had no dairy or alcohol. In the new year, I shall stop dairy and alcohol. My b12 and vit d is on very high, so I have reduced my intake of these. B12 is in meat (which I do not have), fish, eggs and dairy mainly. So please get your blood test done before embarking on any supplements. Being coeliac means that some nutrients do not get absorbed by my body, hence annual blood test. Last year, the doctor did not give me results as was she never tested for the blood. This year, I had to complain to the hospital before it was done. My absorption of nutrients is very effective, as only 1% of gluten exists in my blood. The gastroentrologist said the allowance is up to 6%. I also have osteoporosis/osteopaenia and osteoarthritis. I do cardio and strength training and pilates. This helps but still long way to go.

Thanks Dr. Berg. This gives a good insight about what might potentially going wrong with my health. I have been to ER 3 or 4 times in total, panicking because of lightheadedness, sometimes dull or sharp pain in center or left part of the chest, burps. The doctor has examined my blood, ECG, Treadmill test, Echocardiogram and said my heart is healthy. So he prescribed pantoprazole pill thinking some kind of digestion problem. I don't know if that worked or not but my issue is sporadic. In my overall blood test ordered by the doctor, only Vitamin B12 was abnormal and deficient. Now, I should re-consult my doctor and see if this vitamin deficiency is the root cause of my problem and test whether I have H. Pylori aggravation or some thing related to digestive enzymes or a different problem altogether.

A few thoughts. I strongly feel that Helicobacter pylori and Candida are “partners in crime” and if Candida gets out of control (overgrowth) then H pylori becomes a problem. Next, wouldn’t you think that waiting 2 hours after taking antibiotics before you supplement with probiotics would be better so the antibiotics don’t wipe out the probiotics you just took? In addition, this may also vary by gram negative or gram positive targeting antibiotics. Thanks for the great info!

I have suffered from acid reflux all my life but it has got worse in recent years, coupled with IBS symptoms (without tests showing IBS) I used to but antacid tablets but not any more: I have found Apple cider vinegar and sauerkraut work just as well. I imagine kimchi would have the same effect if I could tolerate the spiciness to eat enough of it. My dentist is not happy about all the acidic food/drink but at least I hope not to have pylori, because of the amount of antibiotics I had to take a year ago, to a point of overdose. I got my gut biome tested around Christmas and the balance of beneficial bacteria is good (I have been eating lots of love yogurt, while cutting down sugar, and my diet is fairly rich in prebiotics) but the range is narrow: hence I am putting up with kimchi & sauerkraut and trying to add miso into my food as well as drinking kombucha. Sweets and fruit are still a challenge.
