Hey everyone! There's been a lot of talk in the comments about Jeff Chan's pulled kick in the Shank Tank and I wanted to address the subject. Even though during the filming of the Shank Tank I was in a separate room sick with Covid and had no call in which fights were stopped, and even though I was part of the judging team after the event was filmed and I was giving the lead to more experienced judges, I can't say I can get off without any blame for how Jeff Chan's Shank Tank was scored. I didn't oppose the pulled kick being counted as a "not effective enough" shot, but I can totally see now that it would had been fair to give Jeff Chan a win for it and even perhaps for his use of the Atomic Bear self-defense pen. But you also have to understand something. It's blowing my mind how much attention the show is receiving right now and I couldn't be more happy about it. But at the same time - it's still a completely new show! To my knowledge nothing even remotely similar has been done on the same scale. And as with any new project - something will get f**d up along the way even with the best of intentions. I mean, no judging has ever been perfect or made everyone happy! Take a look at some of the UFC, boxing fights or any other sport. You will always get heated discussions on how something was judged. But that doesn't mean no improvements should be made. Feedback and growing from feedback and mistakes has always been a hugely important part of my life. It's not out of nowhere I decided to quit Aikido and move on to combat sports and practical self-defense. It was mainly because I listened to smarter-than-me people who explained to me that that's the best option if I wanted to continue growing in my martial arts journey. So trust me when I say this: I am listening to you and improvements will be made in the future (if we'll get enough funding to make future seasons happen that is 😂). There's nothing I can do right now to change what happened in season 2, or in season 1. But we already listened to a lot of feedback from season 1 and used it to make improvements in season 2. And I can confidently say, that the same will be done here. I'm sorry to Jeff Chan and to all of Jeff Chan's fans out there (I know there are many of you!) for the bad call. I'm in talks with Jeff Chan about this and he totally gets what happened. And I promise to you I will make it up for him in the future. But now, we gotta live with the decisions that were already made. Enjoy the show as it is (since it's actually kinda a miracle this show exists to begin with!) and learn from our mistakes to make the future seasons even better (which I will pour my heart into in order to make it happen). Thanks for reading this big 'ol wall of text and keep owning your journey 🙏 PS: A lot of people were asking for Craig's Shank Tank song. I love it too! I'm so sorry to hear of your many health setbacks and I wish you much health and good recovery. I'm sure that with a personality such as yours you will be able to move through this and transform your loss into growth and taking your growth into unexpected and new directions. I've done a little judging for HEMA events (Historical European Martial Arts). It's super hard to tell what's going on sometimes. We don't just judge based on "hits" but quality as well. As you can imagine, things happen fast and making accurate calls 100% of the time is basically impossible. Was a strike made with sufficient rotation? Was it edge-on or with the flat? Did that thrust land when it was obscured by the angle of the fighters? Often times its too hard to tell when things happen in an instant. Yeah, it sucks when you don't get judged fairly but its the nature of the sport.

Perhaps Jeff should have employed a similar mindset to Natan.

As one of the handful of volunteer attackers. I have a genuine respect for all of the competitors. Please guys remember we are all just normal people doing our best to entertain and also provide the best reality we can with safety still in mind. For those that are interested, I'm the guy that Jeff Chan kicked in the head. I realise many of you believe it was a KO shot. I will have to agree to disagree. I literally had no recollection of that shot, until I watched the video. I have analysed it extensively and found that I actually had a parry hand and knife hand that interrupted his kick. So while he kicked me, it was not a clean shot. If Jeff also pulled the shot as he has stated, that was a decision for him. As an attacker my job was to continue until I received what would have been a KO or until a judge blew the whistle, or end of round. Peace to you all.

Umm.. replying for traction. I've been watching this guy's channel for a bit and seen some videos. Honestly, he's just more of a journalist. I don't know his background. Martial arts is useless when unarmed against an attacker with a knife. Option #1: Run Option #2: Hide Option #3: Fight + Escape Meaning, Fight as little as possible, create space, and escape, then run again. If you're trapped in a public restroom such as this scenario, you still NEVER want to attack the person in front with the knife. It will not end well. In this scenario, it would likely be best to keep creating space and keep moving. If you get an opening, front kick their shin really hard from the front, just under their knee, and they'll fall straight down. Front kicks also create space, not side kicks and jabs. 20 seconds of them lying in pain from a hyperextension of the knee and you made it. Otherwise, keep creating space and try to escape. Also, don't let them grab you.
@B..B.
@B..B. 21 сағат бұрын
@@MansoorKhanChannel I disagree in the useless part. I agree with the options tho, but the problem is the martial artists are more sports based and this is still a friendly event. There's a few options one can use against a knife attacker when there's no room to scape, but they're not safe to use even in the context of this competition

@@MansoorKhanChannel if you wanna see how running, hiding, then fighting and escaping go in that order watch episode one, it was already covered there that that doesnt work very well either. Just kicking someones shin isnt as much of a guarenteed fight stopper like you think it is, and even if it was you would have to have trained and practiced that kick a lot to be able to execute it properly and consistantly under that level of stress. And if you are training and practicing kicks, you are doing martial arts. So how could they be useless? You say to throw front kicks, thats another type of kick you need to train and practice to be able to execute properly on a consistant basis under stress. "dont let them grab you" good luck not letting someone grab you in an enclosed space lmao, especially if you havent trained grappling and sense you say martial arts are useless i assume you havent.

As a nurse I feel I need to mention that if you pull guard in a knife fight and use just your legs to fight him off, you put your femoral artery at risk of being severed. That is death in 3-5 minutes. An ambulance ride won't save you. A helicopter ride won't save you. You're done. The issue is when people think of their vital organs, they don't think about what keeps those organs supplied with oxygenated blood. Your arteries are every bet as vital as the pump that pushes that blood through (the heart). Edit: I commented this after Jordan's first round so did not see that it was mentioned later on. Leaving the comment anyway in case someone passes over that part of the video. People need to know to protect their arteries. People are gonna watch this and take notes on how to defend themselves.

So what's the anatomically correct answer? If I try and block using my arms, there's the brachial artery. If I pull guard, there's my femoral. If I headbutt, there's my carotid. if I show my back, spinal tap. But what's this, we already instinctually protect our arteries and other vulnerable areas? Oh, that's convenient. So if someone reaches out to stab my femoral, I already have an instinctual flinch response ready to trigger with the speed of a reflex.

Yeah, even the head kick in the other round. If Jeff mf'ing Chan kicked 95% of dudes in the head, they're going down. Having a knife in their hand wouldn't stop their brain from shutting down or their skull from cracking, so why aren't they acknowleding this in their simulation? At least a 5-second pause to acknowledge disorientation/dizziness or something. As for the atomic bear pen, the determination after the fact was that not enough damage had been done. But how could they possibly decide that? Jeff stabbed him in the face (a deterrent for most people I'd say, if not a deblitating shot). The attacker was allowed to keep stabbing with his fake knife... yet *his* stabs were fatal? Come on now 😅. Sometimes it feels as though the attackers' strikes are weighted more than the competitors. I dunno, maybe due to editing we viewes missed the officials watching very closely and scrutinising where the pen landed/would have landed.

There's a huge problem with the self defense championship that Natan has kind of brought to the forefront. It's that to EFFECTIVELY defend yourself you have to go at or near 100% because your attackers are not going to respect your shots and admit that a kick or punch would have stopped them in their tracks unless it ACTUALLY does make them stop in their tracks. It seemed like the attackers were getting legitimately pissed off at Natan for going so hard. But I understand where Natan's coming from because it's like, I just landed a headkick on you, but pulled it back at the last second and you are just gonna walk through it like it didn't happen??? This happened to Jeff Chan many times already. I think the solution to this problem would be to either set some more clear rules for the attackers like if you get headkicked, round is over, defender won. If you get spinning back kicked round over, and maybe like if you take an overhand right directly to the face or chin, round over. I would probably put my money on Natan winning the whole thing because I don't think the other guys are willing to go that far just to win.. But once again I understand where Natan is coming from.

expressed a similar opinion. Once the world-class martial artists realize they have to rag doll their uki's to get compliance, it will be that much harder to find willing opponents, or the cycle of masochism will escalate. swapping headgear for simple eye protection might stop the force escalation, not sure the right answer.. the goal is 'realism' but not injury..

Funnily enough I think 100% is the only way to go… we practice crazed knife attacks at our TKD club. Normally it’s dodge strike and run. And then assess if we are alive or not. It’s low percentage that we get away without a wound. But we’d just discussed how knife disarms are unlikely to work…. So the knife was coming in for its first strike and I just down wood blocked the strike and hit my mates wrist somewhere proper hard and the knife flew across the hall. We put it down to luck that I’d hit the magic release knife nerve. From then on I concentrate on pure 100% blocks and strikes against a knife attacker escaping when the opportunity presents. I still end up “dead” a lot, but I feel my % survival has increased.

@@hiebrantsify thanks for the reply :) I realize I'm suggesting for season 3. I love this series and want to see it expand and improve. I've been in combat games where the power curve was pushed to the point practice felt like competition.. it 'weeded out the weak' as some of us thought, but 10 years on, it was hard to find new people. the thought is moving to a rugby mindset rather than a US Football mindset. in US Football, especially in the 1970's, their 'armor' was used offensively as much as for protection, where rugby the players learned their limits without added variables added to the sport..

The lesson that I learned from the last two seasons of Shank Tank, is that against a knife attack, basically: 1. NEVER clench up with them 2. Striking Sports give you a chance 3. Use improvised weapons as you can 4. Distance is key 5. Control the knife arm (break it even) 6. Control the opposite arm (for switching) 7. Even with all this, it’s a 50/50 chance

My main problem with the challenge is that it assumes that knives are treated like lightsabers. Even when they have no power behind them they never get caught in clothes, deflect off ribs, bounce of the skull and always hit key organs despite the fact that actual knife attacks often feature stab victims surviving despite numerous stab wounds to places you think would be fatal(such as the chest or head). Combine this with the attackers not having to fear being hurt, the judging of knockouts being inconsistent(how is a flush head kick not a knockout but a punch is) and the very small space and I feel the scores don't match the performance. Having said all that is still great fun to watch and a great video.

I am sorry, but Jeff managed to win 3 times. I don't care who you are, if someone stabs on your face with a pen, you will run on the opposite direction. Second, that head kick is either an immediate KO or will stop the attacker on the track ( and jeff should be able to finish him) off. They literally stole Jeff's victories.
@b.h.abbott-motley2427
@b.h.abbott-motley2427 21 сағат бұрын
Surprisingly, there are lots of people who've been stabbed in the face who don't immediately stop. An attacker hellbent on killing their target could potentially eat a pen stab to the face & keep going.

The guard pull was honestly pretty genius for this specific 1v1 scenario against a knife. You get your powerful legs between your vital organs and the knife and they have to pass your guard to be able to stab your vital parts, except for the femoral artary. It's riskier for them to stab you because when they reach in, they risk getting caught by the powerful upkicks.

The difference is the strategy is much different when you actually feel someone stabbing and cutting your legs multiple times. Even if the adrenaline makes it so you don’t feel it, you still see you leg getting stabbed and the blood rushing out.

@@mactysonkarate How is the strategy different when you actually feel someone stabbing and cutting your legs?
@nightshade7240
@nightshade7240 20 сағат бұрын
@@PauIdenino Because of shock. There is a big difference to cutting yourself with a knife and being physically attacked in this fashion. There are a lot of things that happen in real life these scenarios don't take into account. Even with adrenaline, when fighting back so actively, those stabs and cuts will rapidly reduce your combat effectiveness. Especially cuts to the bare legs. You don't even have to hit an artery. One of the hardest aspects of training to survive a knife attack is the physiological and psychological realities of how most people's bodies will respond that are next to impossible to simulate and adrenaline is a double edged sword. The faster your heart pumps, the faster you bleed, the more cuts you have, the more blood you lose the weaker you get. The way most people survive lacerations and cuts that are life threatening but not from an attacker is to slow their heart rate and get medical attention.
