Reggie Roby was amazing. It was crazy how he wore a watch while punting so he could keep track of his hang time. His legs were huge. The crazy thing, in relation to this subject, I never thought of Reggie as a black punter. I’ve been a Dolphins fan since 1970 and I only thought about him as the Dolphins punter. Funny thinking about that now with everything so race first. Btw, the Dolphins have a white corner. He comes up from practice squad if needed.

Dwight Stevenson was a All-Pro center back in the day and one of the best. I always thought how interesting it was that the dolphins have both him and Reggie Roby playing at predominantly white positions at the time 1979 was when I started watching football so Stevenson and Roby are etched in my mind. Cooper Dejean is a first round talent who may only fall out of the first round due to a recent injury. He actually comps very well to Jason Sehorn in some ways - very ballhawkish, electric when he gets the ball in his hands whether as a defender or kick returner, underperforms at corner relative to his athleticism, not making many defensive plays with it like spectacular leaps to swat the ball but he's still a great coverage corner by just being very technically sound. He's the #1 defensive player in the class IMO and I think he'll be a pro bowl caliber player wherever he goes.

I remember Tony Siragusa being a low key important piece on that 2000 Ravens defense, plugging up the middle at NT. Dermontti Dawson was a Hall of Famer for the Steelers at C, and even within the last 15 years, there was Maurkice Pouncey. I have never in my lifetime seen a full-time Black placekicker.

Another great segment. Don't forget Cleveland's Horace Gillom. African American All Pro/Pro Bowler Punter and End. Because of Gillom's power Coach Paul Brown (who had coached in him in high school and college) developed the punt formation which is still used. Led the league 3 times for punt average. And let's not forget his 6 championships with the Browns.

Jason Sehorn was one of those special guys who is an electric playmaker whenever they get the ball in their hands. He was like Deion Sanders if you brought him down a tier. That's why the Giants put Sehorn in as a punt returner where he unfortunately got the injury that sapped his excellence, during a preseason game no less. Never put your starters in to return kicks and punts. The league would be much better with more guys like Sehorn playing today.

Football is supposed to be the sport that unites us cause you don’t see a team that’s straight up one race or even just 2 races. I’m white so I probably am a non-factor in this conversation as far as the guy who started it is concerned but it upset me a bit cause I don’t remember ever thinking about race when I played football as a kid for years. We were all out there together getting bruised up trying to win together as a team; sharing water bottles and trying to uplift each other. Sharing rides or riding bicycles together to practices.

A cool example of this comes from my 2010 NYJ team. Jim Leonard was not only a white guy playing in the secondary (I think FS most of the time) but at around 5'8" tall. While a weak link in that beast of a defense he was no slouch.

especially considering that the current best RB in the league is a white guy. He didn't even need to know history to know that one, he just has to actually pay attention. Clearly he wasn't with a comment that stupid. I think America as a whole has gotten really sick and tired of the race baiters in recent years and nobody wanted to hear this garbage. I had a friend named Sean Blockey he could jump out of the gym naturally. He was white and about 5”11/ maybe 6 ft tall. The coach was so taken back by Sean being athletic and having some swag, he didn’t allow him to play much. The coach loved Steve Alford and he preferred that style of play but he probably cost our team from reaching its full potential because of his style basis. There was several of us that could dunk but we were so worried about the coach being mad 😠 at us we played above the rim but didn’t try many in game dunks.

The Raiders always embraced the mavericks, misfits and misanthropes when Al was running the show. Just Win Baby was all that mattered. King was and remains worthy of the title of being a Raider Great at the position alongside Ray Guy and Shane Lechler.

One of the coolest collabs I’ve paid attention to is FlemLo/KTO and either riffing on games or the old podcast, because I’m aware it’s a White dude and a Black dude from two parts of the country, two different life experiences, and two different styles to present football stories, but when it’s the conversations and commentary, it’s simply two dudes just kicking it, talking about the things and the game they love! The differences matter, but it’s because people being different means they have something they can teach those who don’t know their world, but a respectful and decent person deserves the same in kind.
