Bought a van in 2019, definitely totally unaware of what to look out for. Within two years almost everything broke down. It’s been probably already 5-7k in repairs only. New tires, that’s a thousand. Solar panels. New wiring. Roof window wasn’t sealed so had to replace it entirely and remove all the mold. We are still romanticizing about the trips we could do as a family with our daughter, that’s why we aren’t selling it (yet). But it’s been definitely a total waste of money!

The best day was when we sold our camper trailer. Why? Well after my family of 5 lived in it for 20 months while our house was remodeled after Hurricane Laura destroyed it, the sale meant we were really done with that stage of our life. We had wanted to start camping before the hurricane and after, we never wanted to set foot in a camper. The retired couple who bought it were happy and so were we. It served us well and paid off our van so it was awesome!

Bought a perfectly good 1988 chevy-powered motorhome for $750 at an estate sale. I spent a total of $100 fixing a couple little things, and I ended up replacing one of the already almost new solar panel batteries for $150 so I'm still under $1,000 all in. I've been living in it for the last 3 years and I drive it everywhere every day and I've never had a single problem, it runs and drives like it's brand new. They don't build them like they used to. Buy an 80s or older model and you'll never have to fix a thing. They were built to last. Now they're made out of cardboard Staples and plastic parts. Buy something in the 80s or the 70s models and you'll be driving it everyday with zero issues

Haha! We once bought a motorhome for $1000 (very similar to the one you got but much older) and we thought we would fix it up. It was previously owned by a single mom and her two teenage daughters. Black water tank had all kinds of “do not flush” products in it. That should have been our first clue that we were in trouble. Started to “remodel” the inside and discovered major water damage. Gutted the entire thing and realized there was no possible way for us to save it. Ended up scrapping the siding and throwing away most of the interior stuff except the stainless steel oven. The only journey that motorhome ever took was when we moved and I towed it behind our van out to our new place in the country. There it say behind our barn until we moved and gave it to the neighbor. Now we have a newer and much nicer motorhome that we use as a bedroom and shower in our warehouse. RV living inside a building isn’t all that terrible LOL

RVs are kinda like buying a boat. It can be a hole in the woods you just keep throwing money in. We did 3 nights 4 days at Yosemite from San Diego. The local RV rental place wanted a $1500 cash deposit for mileage. We decided to drive close to the park and rent there. 6.5 hour drive in our car. Picked up RV and drove 35 mins to our spot. It was mid April and a light rain. We parked and had our car to see the sights. We were warm and dry and could cook if raining. Returning it we topped off the gas and propane and the rental was under $400. Less than a room and about what one month payment for a similar purchase would have been. They showed us how things worked before leaving. There are luxury RV rentals available from a little to allot more. Best part is if there is a break down the bring you another one. RV not wife.

LOL. Hilarious cautionary tale! Have been shopping stripped-down "squaredrop" trailers for quite a while, hoping to lower cost and avoid the complexities and complications of RVs. The upfront cost, then learning (and doing) proper use and maintenance, then storage concerns, then of course, gas mileage. Zoinks! I plan to make a squaredrop comfortable on my own terms. Yet, even simple trailers can be seedy, regarding materials used and build quality. Is ANY camping vehicle worth it?!

i think in order to stop this endless cycle, every old RV when it gets too broken down to be worth fixing should be rolled into the Grand Canyon which will become the official RV cemetery where all RVs can RIP

If you have been doing your own maintenance and camping 20 plus times a year you will be a good inspector.

That's why we settled with a 300hp sea doo PWC. Easy to launch, store, ride etc. It's been flawless!

But it doesn’t have the part where you give it to the neighbors for free & then feel a great sense of relief every time you see it in their driveway instead of your own 😂

Tay and Heidi you've got to tell us if you are indeed looking into joining the #VanLifers / #DigitalNomads because their life is incredible 🤩👍. yes there are a lot of compromises but the places they go and the experiences they get, it's unparalleled and also has varying degrees of unique experiences for each.

We are close to starting year 7 of full time rv. No regrets! Yes...there is maintenance and repairs, but there is with a house too and it usually costs a lot more than an rv. It's not always easy, but then life is always throwing you curve balls. We often wish we had done it when our kids were young. This lifestyle isn't for everyone, but it certainly has been a great decision for us. (A bit of advice: Start with a travel trailer towed with your truck. Use it as often as you can for vacations and weekends. We have a 5th wheel. Best decision we made! 😊 By the way...had to look up what the uoside down pineapple meant!! Never had THAT offer in a campground before!! Now we know if we ever do! 🤣🤣😂

I was speaking with another Rv'er the other day in the state park. He has owned 5th wheels for years, he told me he is finally going back to a bumper pull because have his truck bed back was important when rving which I agreed with my truck always have stuff in it when traveling with the RV.
