Best reverb shootout ever. I have a twin reverb amp and added a spring king to it. I have to max out the knobs to get a decent sound. Love the kick pad.

Having played most of the above I agree with what my ears are telling me right now - and I think it's pretty obvious from the video as well: the Oceans 11 and the Topanga are the closest to the real thing with an excellent sound quality, preserving the tone they receive without artificially making it dark, tinny or lo-fi in any way. Plus they both have adjustments for preamp saturation that most of the others don't. And no, "drip" is not really a decisive factor - I can assure you that the average listener, even a surf+50s/60s fan, hasn't got a clue what it means and wouldn't care less if someone explained it as long as the sounds are good and authentic, which both Oceans and Topanga easily deliver. Of course price is an issue, so with the Oceans you're getting an amazing variety of reverbs for every occasion with about 60 euros less of what you have to pay for the Topanga! Oceans would be an easy winner for me if it had a favourite switch, but still it sounds wonderful and it also has one of the two most beautiful shimmer sounds I've heard from a pedal, with the 2nd being the one from the GFI Specular Reverb (and I've owned Timeline, Space, Superdelay, plugins etc). There is a small asterisk to the comparison which should have been made more clear: the pedals were not dialed in properly with dry/wet ratios, dwell times etc. to sound as close to the tank's sound. But in any case I think the tonal differences and winners of the comparison are still quite obvious.

I have an Oceans 11 (which I love) and a Ventris (which is for sale). The other day I decided to dust off my Fender Outboard Reverb unit (like the one in this video) that I hadn't used for a while.. My conclusion: The pedals still have a LONG way to go before they REALLY compete (except when it comes to convenience)...It's like 3D vs 2D to be honest.

It’s 2021 and the “Drip” is still on sale. I have one, for simulated “surfy” sounds, and the big problem with the “Drip” (but easily fixed) is the significant volume drop. When I started gigging with it on my board the volume drop was annoying, having to adjust volume between numbers etc, so I put a pre-amp in front of the pedal. Amazing difference! It also works with the pre-amp behind the “Drip” but the effect is different. If you already have a pre-amp pedal, the “Drip” is a good bargain. I am surprised that Ryan did not mention about the volume drop, the Danelectro real spring unit is the same.

I don't know if this has been mentioned already, but I have noticed in your videos with the Spring King you have the volume down pretty low. This is not a volume knob in the traditional sense as it does not effect the actual output level of the sound, but rather effects the amount of signal that is being sent to the spring reverb part of the pedal. To really get a heavier reverb sound that is comparable to the other pedals, you need to have the volume knob much higher. This gets you much closer to a drippy, cavernous reverb sound

That boss pedal goes for over $200 now, so although it's phenomenal, it's now up against newer "better" pedals with higher price tags than the boss originally did. It's an incredible pedal but considering it's used price it's not the best one. If it was still only $100?? Oh hell yes but unfortunately not the case anymore

Love the review! Great use of a looper to remove the playing variability! I think each pedal has it's own application and sound. I actually really like the sound of the drip - it has it's own thing going on, and for under $100, that's amazing! I have an Ocean's 11 waiting at home for me to play with tonight and I'm excited to break it out! It appears to be a pretty powerful lil device for the money! I'm stoked to have a drippy reverb (among its other functions) on my board!

Thanks so much. This is the first head-to-head (or should it be reverb tails-to-tails) video comparison between the two newest reverbs, the Oceans 11 and the TC Electronic Drip Spring Reverb that I know of. I know that your ending didn't officially rank the pedals but I think some of us will view it that way. If so, I'm surprised the Ventris was in fourth place but as you said you needed perhaps to tweak the setting. But overall a very impressive and helfpul video. I can now eat my cookie in peace.

Some people complain about the TC electronic Drip's volumen drop, and that's probably because once the mix knob goes over noon it starts taking the guitar signal away and leaving only the reverb. The max reverb you get on these pedals is at noon... I wonder if there's any volume drop when the mix knob is under noon though

Another option is the MXR M300. Has a good sounding spring with subtle drip. The Ventris and Oceans 11 are the best on the market right now. Have owned all the others and none have stuck around while an actual outboard tank just isn’t practical enough. The tone suck and volume drop adds to its impracticability. Your album is excellent.

I realize the focus of this excellent video is spring reverbs. And while I'm just getting started with this ... I am leaning pretty heavily toward the Oceans 11. Sounds great! I'd also like to encourage you to check out the official Oceans video product demo by Electro Harmonix. I'm big on most bang for the buck and the EH has some great sounds. For example ... be sure to check out the sound at 8:10 within the demo--it's a very cool, very usable Rickenbacker 12 string - sounding kind of sound! Getting ready to order mine ... plus it won't break the bank.

Michael I'd like to see that video too! (how close can you get the tc hof) I don't think it can ever quite do this exact drippy thing, but it can do a bunch of other amazing sounds. - People rip on it without trying any tone prints, or editing. - It's an awesome engine though.

@xenod1066
@xenod1066 6 жыл бұрын
Michael Yeah, I guess no drip lives there. Lol. As far as programming the other reverbs, it would help to know what the parameters mean, and what engineers have done in the past, which is maybe not common musician knowledge. - There are quite a few videos explaining reverb and it's use in the studio, and there's a couple of videos of guys making tone prints in some detail. - I think it helps almost all of them to roll off some highs. It's useful to roll off the lows too. You can clean them up, and make them a bit more natural that way, and by not using super long decay, and maybe turning up pre-delay. - The mod reverb has too much modulation, and the plate could use more diffusion. So those are things to try. - It a tweakers paradise, but not great for plug in and go, unless you love one of the stock sounds. - I would say though that those sound as good as similar reverb pedals that were available when it came out. - It's a lot better than the Boss RV5.. And they're cheap and can be made to sound like almost anything, if you tweak them enough.. - Different reverbs for different folks I guess. - There's so much good stuff out now!

Old video Ryan, but I'm just catching it now. Did you know that the reason why your output is lower is because the 12at7 instead of an ax7 in the pre, along with the lack of a V4 12ax7 buffer stage. The 70s reissues were the only models to have this correction and usually do not see any volume drop as a result. In fact, the reissues are almost exact to the original 6G15 except for the 6V6, originally it was a 6K6 driver section tube.

I feel like I gotta step in for the ventris here... I've been on a never ending search for good spring reverb in a pedal, and until I got that pedal, nothing quite nailed it like the ventris can. I definitely think you should do a redo of that pedal and make the proper adjustments. When it's set right, the true spring mode is seriously unmatched. I also tend to raise the highs in the Nero app when recording because it's slightly dark on my amp, but other than that they did a great job. When you hear it in person, it's uncanny with how much it nails that old school surf drip and hollowy chime and vibe. Also doesn't muddy up in the slightest with chords like a lot of other pedals do. The Topanga is also the best for a cheaper option. Still great

The original and reissue Fender Reverb units compress the signal. That's why the volume drop (they all do that). I've been using a 1963 on and off since I bought it in '69 for $20.00 (I'm not really a surf guitar guy, I've been into the blues since I was 12, although the first band I was in at age 13 in 1965 did play only rock/surf instrumentals). There's a feel to the tube powered reverb units that's due to the compression, that you either get into or you hate it, or somewhere in between. I dig it. But if I haven't used mine in a while there's a short period of getting used to it 'again' when I go back to it. The reissues sound the same as the old ones, although they use a 6V6 tube and the old ones use a 6K6 tube. Slight diff., maybe. There are kits to build a 'hand wired' original clone from a few companies, cabinets too. The Fender reissues have a printed circuit board, I believe, that would be a factor if PCBs bother you. The old original ones were wired by hand to the usual Fender tag board. Back to the compression, I've found that I have to dial up the clipping on an overdrive when going through my original F. R. U., But it's not a problem for me, but something to consider if you're going to pay the money for one. The 9 volt pedals are cool, some more than others, thanks for this demonstration, I'm always looking for a smaller version but so far the old girl is the one for me. Good job on the video, Thanks. I hope this helps. PEACE

I played the 65 Fender Reverb when it was first released and it still sounds awesome. The Oceans 11 and Topanga for the win.

I think you're right. The TC drip sounds like a mellow spring unit. It has a little bit of that artificial sound, because they actually make those reverb sounds with a lot of slapback delays mushed together. But i thing it would be really good for a bluesy thing, and you couldn't hear the bad things about it in the mix. The topanga sounds the best to me!

Yeah it is much more of a slapback effect, it reminds me of some of the slap backs on the Eventide H9

The TC isn't quite hitting the mark, but a lot of the others were almost a bit abrasive to my ears. I guess it's all in the amp settings.

What's your thoughts on true audio vs o ceans 11? More interested in the drip setting. But curious on your thoughts of both. I couldn't find a video comparing both from you.

hey, want to know a secret? (cups hands around mouth so no one else can hear me or read my lips). Later today ill be publishing a demo for a new drippy reverb that fits between the price point of those two options. Ive been waiting to do a comparison video of a few other reverbs (O11 and true spring included) until after I get that demo launched ;-)

I love these shootouts, and I'd love to hear you demo one of the late 60's Fender solid state FR-1000's. All of the demos I've seen of those are awful quality, but they sound promising.

Topanga all the way. Thats the one id buy if i could affordbthe big boy unit. In fact u should do a comparison just between the topanga and fender unit. To my ears and someone who plays fender reverb amps its the one and just doest 'still holds up well' against newer pedals. Catalinbread puts alot of sweet lovin into their pedal and it shows.
