FINALLY someone puts out a decent video of all the spring emulators out there, and does it from a surf guitar perspective, instead of some boring country/blues variation. Thanks, man! Spring reverb was MADE for surf, I tells ya! Now if someone would just do a similar thing with phasers and flangers with synthesizers instead of freaking guitars.

@@jnagarya519 It is beginner stuff, but that's why it's great and more people should play it, at least on occasion. It's medicine. We often feel a connection and comfort in accessible art, and it can be a beautiful mutual encounter to share that feeling with people, rather than bashing them over the head with shred skills (not that it's always a bad thing though). 🤙

Wow thanx for this very Entertaining little hour! As an owner of a couple of these (Surfy Bear big metal version, Topanga, Fender reverb pedal) I can truly get behind you when you say that the Surfy Bear is the best. But I miss one pedal I own in this test and that is the Strymon Flint. Of all the reverb pedals I own, it still is on my board, with the Surfy Bear. OK, it doesn't has the big drip, but it can surf and it has a better tremolo than the Fender version. But the Flint and the Surfy Bear together.... Man, you can make a closet sound like an enormous Dick Dale church! Thanx again!

Loved this ultimate shootout, thanks!!! Surfybear the best, just perfect. Topanga really sounds awesome, it's warm as if it EQs the hollowed out tone a spring can cause. I like the True-Spring for the same reason, drippy but warm. The Zoom, I called it surprising before I heard you call it that, too, and it kills because it's a bunch of pedals, not just spring reverb. Fender Tre-Verb is not quite, it's subtle, like "my brain knows that's not real", and then after I typed this you said you're probably going to sell it. I really like the Danelectro, all it needs are knobs that go up to you know what--sounds great already but just barely makes it.

Very thorough reviews and advice. I've been using my cheap Behringer reverb and I have a lot of fun with it. It can't really drip though, so I think I'll try the Ocean's 11 or the Spring King because they are fairly affordable and have good reputations. I'll keep an eye out to see if you post either. I would love to go all in on a Surfy Bear (tolex version) but they are a bit pricey for somebody just noodling around.

This is an awesome comparison - I think it's great that you used a looper to ensure the part being played is exactly the same and the time stamps really make it easy to compare the sounds. Nice going Ryan! For what it's worth, I thought the TC Drip was the least good of the bunch. The Surfy Bear Metal was awesome. I've got a soft spot in my heart for Danelectro :-)

Zoom reverb tone is beautifully intensified and thickened by adding its built-in "Tube Delay" in the effects chain after "Springs 63" with delay time 65-70 msec. Adding compression after these intensifies drip further. Few if any of the other pedals reviewed include tube delay or compression effects, so it is fair to include these in a comparison.
@mooseyard

I have the Zoom MS70-CDR, which also has “Spring 63". I couldn’t find a “Tube Delay” on it, but it has a “Drive Delay” which it says is modeled on the LINE6 M9 TubeEcho, so I’m guessing it’s just a name change. Adding that delay after the reverb, with drive turned up, does make it sound better. Thanks for the tip!

Topanga is awesome. Then I had a chance encounter with one of the best luthiers in the Portland area (his wait list is almost out to 2030, not joking!) he's too pricey for me but he is so friendly, helpful and super knowledgeable about seemingly EVERYTHING. When I was introduced to him I mentioned I was a big fan of the Topanga for spring reverb (CB are based here in Portland) and he told me to try powering it at 18v and also suggested I open the back of the pedal and calibrate the Topanga's 18v tone to the gain trimpot inside. Holy moly! I emailed him to tell him how much of a drastic improvement his advice helped with, to which he responded "Glad I could help. Now unplug the power, set the Tone knob to zero then plug the power back in, enjoy your new reverb." I had no idea if he was mixing my email up with someone else's? I didn't understand what the point of turning the Tone down and unplugging it but I tried it anyway and goooood loorrrrdy I had to pick my jaw up off the floor after the shock wore off. All these years I'd been utilizing not even 50% of the magic of the Topanga. I think about that exchange all the time, I'm not embarrassed to admit I'm straight up jealous of the the people who have this guy as their luthier... I'd probably learn more about my own gear in 5 min talking to him than I've learned on my own in 20 years of playing guitar!

it's so legit. And it really shows that the circuit design is a huge part of the surf reverb sound. Springs are important and tubes are nice, but the circuit makes the real difference. The compact is a little darker but the size difference is well worth the compromise, and it works well as an all around reverb too.

Ryan, thanks again for covering the most important issues in guitar today (at least from my narrow perspective!) in such a detailed and exhaustive manner. Much appreciated. And as former Fender tank user, I wholly concur with your compliments and complaints. back in my day (the 90's) your only choice was an original or reissue 6G15 for the most part. I got sick of dealing with the unintentional splashes (putting the unit offstage, or hanging it up was a pain at shows) and the general hassle, as well as the volume sucking issue. Luckily, my reissue Vibroverb apparently had the normal and bright channels in phase, so I ran the output of the onboard tank into a volume pedal and then into the normal channel. It got so close to the 6G15 sound on stage I ditched the outboard unit the next week. Too bad that trick didn't work on the Vibrasonic (channels out of phase or some other issue, it sounded weird and unusable). Anyhow, so glad there are so many choices now for every budget and configuration. Again, nice job.

Ryan, I'm curious. Have you ever seen/played one of the Fender FR1000 solid state reverb units from the late-60s/70s? If so, how does that stack up against the tube unit?

The clarity and openness of the Fender Reissue just seems better then all the rest here. Those subtleties get lost in a band situation, but the Fender is still the king :) Some of the pedals sound real good (i've had some of these including surfybear) but they are darker (and I'm all about the dark, expect for 6G15) but to me, the pedals just don't have quite the same character.

Man I was hoping to like the Anasounds one more. I already have loads of spring tanks that could be put to use. Seems like it could be a matter of gain staging? Hitting the spring with more gain to make it "drip"? On my rack mount unit the gain staging before and after the tank makes a huge difference.

Which spring verb would you recommend in 2021 for surf drip? Anything youve come to fancy since this video?

If it weren’t for the drop in signal strength, I would be unable to distinguish between the Fender tank and the Surfybear. In a mix, they would be ABSOLUTELY indistinguishable. She’s a beauty-kudos to @Surfy Industries.

Amazing, mate! You should also get a Crazy Tube Circuits “white whale” - it’s an amazing pedal with real springs in it and great tremolo tones ✌🏻

I very new to the surfy world and thanks Ryan for the introduction. Loads of fun I see and lots to choose from in the reverb world. But what is the best entry level surfy guitar?
