Dr Neel, your videos do a great service to mankind. First, during this distressing time of COVID, it helps us to look at things in perspective. We should be thankful that our ears are healthy...our problems are meager compared to what these patients are suffering. Second, you put the products of your diggings into a scale, further giving perspective on the size of the ear wax taken out. Many people may be inspired by your videos to take up audiology course thinking they will dig out many such magnificent waxes; by putting the products into a scale, you are showing them reality that it is not so. It may be a crushing disappointment to aspiring audiologists, but better to face reality now than later when its too late to change careers. Never a good idea to choose profession based on youtube diggings.

How does one gauge as to whether they need their ears professionally cleaned out or not?
@viviennejordan2153 жыл бұрын
Leave Your ears alone, they are Self Cleaning. Don't get water in Your ears, as it contains bacteria. If it Pools in the ear, as in the case of Craters in the ear, Swimmer's ear, Infection, then the bacteria will multiply, and lead to/ increase Infection. If You have a Perforated eardrum, Never let water into the ear. Always Ask Advice from Your ENT Specialist, or Audiologist.
@viviennejordan2153 жыл бұрын
If there is pain, a feeling of fullness in the ear, blockage, a lot of itchiness, loss of hearing, get it Checked by Your Doctor, ENT Specialist, or Audiologist. There may be two and froing between them. In England, a Doctor isn't trained in Audiology, but can Refer You on to ENT, and can issue meds. An Audiologist can Check Your hearing, and Clean Your ears. But can't Dispense, or Administer medication or Anaesthesia. An ENT Can do Both.

@christinas44 жыл бұрын
He said the pieces are disposable so I think he’ll use new ones
@emily.g.9294 жыл бұрын
I would say yes. Although the ear canal isn’t considered “sterile” and it doesn’t normally need totally sterile treatments, the fact that the harmful bacteria/fungus from the infection could stick on the tools and if he works with another patient where they have a small scratch in the canal surface it could infect that wound. He probably disinfects with chlorine dioxide or chlorhexadine for cases like this and probably regular rubbing alcohol for the non infected ears. Speculation of course!

They are Single Use, Disposable. It looked Clean, New, when inserted into the other ear. I would have thought that Both ears would be Examined before the Cleaning, So that the Infected one would be done last. But I don't know that. I do know that if Both ears have no infection, the Audiologist uses the same Suction probe. You will sometimes see only one ears extraction, on a video, and the probe has been used. That means that the other ear was probably not interesting enough, or didn't have much wax.

This is an old video so I doubt I'll ever get an answer but I was wondering if the patient might have keratosis obterans in that ear prior to the infection. The way they're was so many layers of coiled skin. And the ear looked "enlarged" to me despite it being edematous. I was actually surprised Neel didn't mention KO, he's usually quite keen on diagnosing it.
