I 💕 LOVE these types of Spider 🕷️🕸️ and their webs! I caught 1 when I was just 10 years old vacationing in Mississippi in the Summer of 1971. I was captured by her Extraordinary Beauty and Color Scheme!!! I love the South! The Spiders are so big there! Our Orb Weavers in Detroit are smaller, but still Beautiful Animals!

Argiope aurantia is a showy spider usually noticed in late summer. It has several common names: black-and-yellow argiope, black and yellow garden spider, corn spider, golden garden spider; golden orb-weaver, writing spider, yellow garden argiope, yellow garden orb-weaver, and zipper spider. The bodies of females grow to a little more than one inch long; males are much smaller. The third pair of legs is about half as long as the other legs. Males often hold the front pairs of legs close and the hind pairs of legs close together so that the silhouette resembles a St. Andrew's cross. The segment to which the legs and mouthparts attach is covered with very short, shiny, white scales. The abdomen is egg-shaped and conspicuously marked with black and yellow. Females spin orb webs (spiral sticky threads suspended on non-sticky spokes) with a conspicuous white zigzag structure in the middle called the stablementum. Spider experts disagree about why these spiders spin stablementa. Earlier the stablementum was thought to give stability to the web. Now the thinking is that the stablementum attracts insects or keeps birds from flying through the web. All spiders are carnivores that prey primarily on insects. Black and yellow garden spiders find their prey by sensing vibrations in the web. They eat anything that doesn't tear itself loose from the web. At night, females consume the sticky strands of the web and spin new ones. It is thought they gain some nutrition from minute insects and even miscellaneous organic matter caught in the web. After mating in late summer or early fall, females lay several hundred to a thousand or more eggs inside a brown, silk, spherical cocoon about an inch in diameter. The spiderlings hatch but do not emerge from the cocoon until the following spring. Unfortunately for them, parasites and predators, including birds, prey upon these hapless spiderlings so that only a few survive the winter and even fewer survive to become adults the following season. There is one generation per year.

JT, I agree, he should have thrown a yellow jacket, paper wasp or a hornet into the web instead. Not a fair fight for the mantis that is a female and not fully grown with its legs, claws and weapons disabled in the black and yellow argiope web. If the argiope spider eats the mantis, it would be obese and fall of its web and die then the ants, vespid wasps, flies, crickets, katydids and all those pests that both the beneficial spider and mantises both feed on would have all drain the eco system. Only the male mantis can fly, an orb web spider usually doesn't catch a mantis nor the male mantis flies into the web nor does the female mantis craws onto the web to stalk and strike the spider to eat. Mantises are smart and would not steal the spider's food and only preys on the spider if it can't catch other harmful insects to eat and survive. Unlike bees and mantises, wasps and hornets are stupid enough to steal the spider's food and try to fly right into the web or steal silk from the web to make its paper nest stronger. I hate wasps and hornets and bees, mantises and spiders are the top 3 most beneficial creepy crawlies in the world and all 3 boost the eco system. The top 3 that bust the eco system are wasps, mosquitos and flies.

I've got one who has made a huge web across my glass deck door which I don't use. In fact, a storm washed the web away but she came back and rebuilt it. I see a large egg sac nearby, and I'm okay with it as long as baby spiders don't squeeze through the closed door. I'm afraid of or annoyed by most kinds of insects, so if the spider keeps them out of my house, that's good.

My grandma called them garden spiders. I have one on my patio. But the female and male seem to have gone somewhere and left a huge eggsack if I move it will it be ok? I don't want dozens of them. Any suggestions? I didn't see any for many I years and worried they are going down in population and my grandma was very adamant about them being important in providing natural insect control and I see this is very true so I don't want to just kill them.
