This evening was a coin toss, the woodmizer won and we squared up a nice Hemlock Log, Was going to use this for some framing lumber but it's nicer than I expected so Im not sure what Im going to do with it now. Any ideas?

I had to take a medical retirement because of injuries to my back an neck . I like doing wood work an metal work small stuff. I had to have knee replacement just three months ago an I enjoy watching y’all working an I can’t wait until I get back at it ! I can’t do the things y’all do but just doing something makes life worth living making something with your hands is so enjoyable. People out there with hurt backs don’t give up move around an you will get better . Setting around an doing nothing makes things worse get out an live . Hey when I get better I will do a intro with my buddy max in my shop enjoying life . Dogs make life better. Treat them right love them an they will love you back 😎

It amazes me how many times I hear casters say, you may not see much because it is getting dark out here. Cameras are better than people think because I don't see it getting dark on my end.

We had a Circle Mill up till 2010 and have sawn lots of hemlock. It’s great for framing and boxing material. We have sheds framed with poplar and bore bees eat them up, but the hemlock sheds are hardly ever bothered. It’s doesn’t twist up like some woods will when making long 2” lumber either. Take advantage of all you can get.

I see all the saw dust and it reminds me of a project started last week here in northern Wisconsin. It is 15 below zero and I have planted green beans and lettuce out side and it is up after 5 days . I have a large wood chip pile and have been watching it steam all winter. I was putting small amounts of corn on the pile for the deer when after a week the corn had sprouts about 2 inches high. The light went on in my head and I put a small green house on the pile. Funny for the middle of February in Northern Wisconsin and growing vegetables in sub zero weather without any added heat.

Hello Mike and Melissa. Hemlock is great for building anything that will have moisture, as it will not rott like most other woods. Was used in wooden culvert before metal or plastic culverts were introduced. I made raise garden beds with uncured 2 x 10 hemlock, here in New Brunswick Canada, by the Bay of Fundy, and have had no twisting yet after 3 years. Love the videos, keep up the great work.

PNWCB here, just stopped by to see how your doing.... light snow in the Spokane Wa. area... I'm 2 weeks into being heartbroken, I lost my retirement dog of 13 years..... Hemlock was included in a mix (hemlock, maple, cherry, alder) that we cut and then had planed to use as paneling in a few rooms and an addition to my parents house. Still there and still looking good almost 50 years later.

8/4 Hemlock makes for nice stair treads. It's rot resistant and stains nicely when dried. Keep it up!

Rough cut hemlock is used a lot for building around here. Makes great framing lumber and siding. Siding can be stained or just left to age to a nice gray patina. It's probably second to cedar for weather/moisture resistance. The original section of our house was framed and sided with hemlock taken off the property.

Mike, We always used green (not kiln dried) hemlock for framing because it's tough and when it dries to holds the nails so tight that it prevents squeaking. It may squirt like you're driving a nail in an apple when you frame with it but it dries out and is so rugged. And truly, once it dries you have a tough time pulling nails out of it. I love it! I built an entire workshop out of it except for the rafters because they didn't have them long enough. I had to buy 20' KD lumber for those. The only problem we had was once we built a wall for a 28' square workshop we needed the tractor to stand it up. It was so heavy!

Hemlock is good for door casings and windows. Grows in wet.....doesnt warp and is mildew resistant......great for drafts around windows and doors.

Here in Maine, we usually nail it green. It tends to twist and warp during drying. It's generally a very low cost lumber. It brings very little to the woodlot owner as stumpage.

I built a 36 x 36 2 story 3 bay garage that is 100% hemlock frame and hemlock board and batten. Also have finished hemlock and built stair railing in my log home. Here in North Central Pa hemlock is almost considered junk wood and there is lots of it. It can be bought by truck load quite cheap. Hemlock is very durable. Most 100 year old barns around here were built with hemlock. I am currently building a 24 x 36 equipment shed that is hemlock frame and hemlock board and batten siding. AND HEMLOCK is Pa. State Tree!! Be careful if you burn it..it tends to snap, crack and throw sparks, but burns quick and hot.

Hey Mike that hemlock is a really stable wood my grandfather would use it for all kinds of projects. We had a pile of hemlock 2x4's outside for years and they were all perfectly straight after 10 years!

Here’s a tip. Put the flat split part that was closest to camera end parallel to the blade. Rotate log so you will cut it first. You will have less waste. You’re gonna remove the outer edges anyway, isolate it to one of those sections. I hope I’m explaining this ok. Thnks.

At 11:22 in the video there is great shot of a bullseye knot in the hemlock. It isn't a bad shot of Melissa either. As I recall, the Morgan Ladies always men a good picture. Their absense cn render anything much less interesting. Like Hunter I have notions of the proper order of things. There's Eva's sparkling smile,, on video, as Iit is in my heart.. Then there's quiet Hanna's like a shooting star, but much rarer. She is a quiet Hero, as the best of them are. She also thrives after defeating Chiari Malformation, the illness which put Eva in the hospital. In a video about her illness, Hanna spoke about the scar and weakness it produced.. I was struck by the strength, beauty, and spirit which more than survived the experience. God Bless you, beloved friends.

Greetings from snowy/icy No. VT - Good morning and have a great day. We have a lot of hemlock at our place in New Hampshire and it is not as clear as what you are getting from your property. If they don't have a lot of knots they are great as siding or framing lumber. Very good moisture/rot resistance. As clear as they are coming out 2 x 8's or 2 x 10' would be a great use for framing that is near the ground and subject to proximity (but not contact) moisture.

Greetings from a Very Windy N. Wales. Years ago where I worked as a cabinet maker we used to use hemlock for cabinet framing because it was easy to get a nice finish on it. Enjoyed seeing Malissa running the Woodmizer. I don`t know if you are already doing it but you should use a stiff brush to clean the sawdust off each board before it is stacked as it can sweat/heat up in the right conditions and the timber can start to rot. I had bought 4 pallets of Maple that were 40`` square and 48" high all cut to 3"X 1/2" and when I got it home the majority in the centre had started to rot, some I used but I lost most. The saw dust had not been cleaned off it. Sorry for going on a bit but I don`t want to see you loose any of that lovely timber Willie

we have all kinds of hemlock up here in new brunswick canada they grow in swamps up here! so you can set it on the ground and it don't rot ! one thing don't go near it with a plainer! hard grain dulls blades quick local mill won't plain the stuff! you need to build a building over that saw mill to get it out of the weather! and you sir have a beautiful wife in so many ways , a real gem!

Hemlock is a great wood when your worried about water or moisture exposure. They used to use it to build well boxes because of this feature. I built a house for a friend year ago, who bought a 10 acre plot adjacent to the Adirondack frontier, the land was covered with giant hemlocks which the seller agreed to cut down and mill for the buyer. It. Must have a giant capacity for water absorption because it shrinks way down from it cut size once dried, but it is a beautiful wood and works easily with most hand tools!

What ever you use the Hemlock for, use it in a dry environment. Hemlock is one of the most decay prone woods if it is subjected to moisture.
