Is 2,750 fps feasible for 6mm ARC? In this video I'll show my wild west load development for 6mm ARC using QuickLoad software, give a preview of the CMMG Endeavor 300-series 6mm ARC AR-15, and also determine if 2,750 is realistic for 6mm ARC.

Barnes shows their data for the 6.8 SPC in a 16.5 inch barrel which is great. I know I can build a 6.8 sporter and hunt. The Grendel needs a long barrel to perform, BAD!!! 6mm ARC also seems to need a LOOONNNG barrel to perform BADDD!!!!! Everyone appears to be avoiding the shorter barrels in the 6mm ARC and that is NOT a good sign! I hate Hornady hype
@LRRPFco52
@LRRPFco52 2 жыл бұрын
@@leeeng478 Neither 6.5 Grendel nor 6mm ARC need long barrels to perform. I put that myth to rest when I ended up with a 16” barrel initially for my first Grendel, even though I wanted a 20”. At the time, you had to be on a notification list to have a chance to get one through Midway USA (2009), and I put the longer barrel in my cart, went to check out....gone. I went back to see what showed in-stock, and it was either a 24”, 18”, or 16”. I put the 18” in and went to check out...gone. Went back quickly, threw the 16” in the cart and was able to check out. I initially handicapped the 16” Grendel to only shooting 600yds or less because this was the mantra online at the time. On a dare, out in one of my frequented shooting areas, some guys challenged me to try to shoot a target at 1200yds they had been trying to hit all day. I plugged in the data into my ballistics app, which said 14 mils elevation, and turned the turret until it was maxed-out, then used some reticle hashes for the rest. First round hit right off the bottom left edge. I used that as my new aiming point and let the next 4 rounds go to that point as fast as I could reacquire and break each shot. I then built a Lilja-barreld 18” Lightweight Wasp profile Grendel and spent 3 years working with it in all my courses and anything where I would shoot traditional rifle distances, as well as long range. I normally only shot .260 Remington at those distances, but left the .260 Rem alone mostly so I could marry the Lilja Grendel. I built a lot of 20”, 18”, 22”, and 16” rifles and uppers for other guys as well during that time, test-firing them for accuracy. A few years ago, I built 2x 12” Grendels with Group Buy Faxon barrels. 90gr TNT Federal factory load does 2700fps from those. 120gr Federal OTM does 2400fps. From the 17.6” Lilja Grendel, 90gr TNT does 2900fps. 120-123gr factory ammo does 2450-2484fps.

Gavin your results seem very inline with what Hornady claims vs what I have actually seen and recorded with a labradar and 22” barrel. Factory ammo at 2730 FPS in my 22”. I really like that you account for the gas system. Another thing to consider is barrels sometimes speed up with further use. You could easily see a 25-50 FPS bump in velocity with more rounds down the tube. At which point for you barrel length would be right on par for what Hornady claims. Very cool to see insight on how you use quickload to come up with a recipe. Great work!

@@justinlance4174 How did you come up with 200 fps? West said that factory ammo was almost spot on advertised with 2in shorter barrel. Factory ammo is never as fast as a good handload so that can be turned up. I think gavin is using too fast burning powder here and would benefit from something slower. If you look up johnnys reloading bench he has a vid where he loads a 90 gr sgk to nearly 3000 fps with some more room to go. Thats over 1800 fpe and it was out of a 18 in barrel.

My PPC experience is with 70 grr flat base bullets in I B S matches. I used AA 2460 and H322. Most competitors used N133. I was competitive using H322. I’ve used AA2460 in my .308 and have shot groups at .25 “. I love both powders and think you should try them. 27.5 grains of H322 was optimum in my PPC. I'm amazed at the efficiency of this cartridge! The small amount of powder being used to produce that velocity and down range energy is eye opening. The military definitely needs to look at this as an upgrade for AR platform as it exceeds 5.56 performance in every way. For me if it becomes more common and ammo is readily available, I can see a large varmint to deer cartridge in my gun safe.
@milesn3173

1) You trade velocity (ball powder) for temp stability (extruded) in this class of cartridge. If you want the speed, try Leverevolution powder. 2) 60ksi is going to cause fatigue failure on your bolt lugs if you keep it up. 52ksi limit is there for a reason. 60ksi would be fine if you do a bolt action rifle. 3) I think you covered it well, but barrel length is a massive contributor to reaching published numbers. I wouldn't attempt to burn a 20" barrel down trying to get 24" numbers.

Gives a velocity over 2800 fps out of a 3r 22 inch barrel 1 in 8 twist. Xbr will give you some more speed though but hard to beat varget for long range work. Every new cartridge is immediately seized upon by reloaders and wildcatted. The 6.5 Grendel case spawned numerous 6mm Grendel wildcats and we've had them for over a decade. Very pleased that Hornady has finally codified this wildcat with the new 6mmARC factory ammo. Thus, I recommend starting your load development with the 6mm Grendel/6mmAR body of knowledge. For example, try the 6mm 108 class with Hodgdon Leverevolution powder for best velocities in 6mmARC.

Love the content on 6mm ARC, and I'm planning on getting one myself, but you are loading way over pressure for an AR. The "Average" in SAAMI's Maximum Average Pressure (MAP) refers to the average of maximum pressures of some sample size or lot. QL is estimating 61ksi and predicting your velocities pretty well, which means your pressures with those H4895 loads are far above the 52ksi MAP limit. Some folks involved in pre-launch development have posted on some forums that 25.5gr of H4895 under a 108gr ELD tests at ~52ksi in a pressure barrel, another data point to consider. All the Grendel bolt lug breakage stories are from folks loading these kinds of pressures in ARs and radically decreasing bolt lug fatigue life. It looks like with this cartridge in an AR, we'll either have to use temp sensitive ball powders (CFE223, Leverevolution, PP Varmint) to reach advertised velocities, or be happy with ~100fps less using more stable powders.

I think your results are about what would be expected. Your methods seem very good. Great video. 6 ARC is interesting, but for different reasons. I hope it results in better magazines for the Grendel and a larger market for compatible parts. I could see getting tooled up for 6arc with a Howa mini..that would be fun for target use. Prefer the Grendel for hunting.

I've been researching 6.5 Grendel for an 18" AR upper for a while and 6ARC dropped out of the sky on me with claims of faster and slightly better energy down range. With the military looking at Barrett's 18" 6ARC I'm curious. I'm trying to learn as much as possible about 6ARC so keep the content coming!

Great video. For a normal 20 inch AR15/M16, the 6ARC would almost double the energy and range of a 5.56. When I was in the Marine Corps I wouldn't have been very happy for DOD to make the change to this cartridge.

Great workup Gavin. I'm very interested in your comment you made about; I'm paraphrasing you. "I modified the Fundamentals of Marksmanship and other things to eliminate as many variables as I could from the shooting equation" Could you provide more details on what you changed and why? Look forward to seeing what you did,

This is one of your better videos. Much better than the jib jab guest conversation videos that are usually boring and really too much opinionated. You do a good job in presentation. I have been interested in a Quick Load program but have been reluctant to purchase because much of the ballistic software upgrades I have used are worse to use than many of the older programs they replaced. When you have to scroll to read, or information is so small on the screen you can't read it well it pretty much sucks. The Lee DOS program for instance is better than their new one. The old DOS Sierra program was easier to use than the newer ones. They didn't do as much but were much easier to use and you didn't need to pull out the reading glasses to read fine print.

You should check out 6mm mongoose. It's based on the 223/5.56 case, just blown out for maximum case capacity. Gets the same velocities but uses the same bolt and mags as your common AR. Simple barrel change, and bam! you got 6mm arc ballistics for a fraction of the cost. Don't waste your money people, yes 6 arc is badass and will be a huge thing for a long time after all the other wildcats are "dead" but if you reload, then you already know what's best for you.

I totally agree with you using the best equip you can get. From scientific or engineering standpoint you need to mitigate the variables impact on the results. in my case a better shooter lol.....like any gages used in machining they must be 10 times the accuracy of the tool you are using to measure with, so you are trying to do that with your high end equipment. Don't know you background but I'm guessing you are an engineer. I enjoy your content and keep it up. More 6 ARC please as I just bought and upper.

You could also do the same by necking up .223 brass to .243 (done decades ago and called the 6x45mm). More available/less expensive brass...but I like the ARC also.

Gavin, Have you encountered feeding issues with the 6mm ARC cartridge? I am new to the platform and took my CMMG Endeavor to a long range class only to have my experience tainted by frequent magazine feeding issues both with the factory CMMG mag that came with the gun, as well as ACS mags that I read were supposed to be more reliable. Every time I would miss a shot the instructor would say you got Arced again.

Hi LadCo12, I have made such custom Tikka T3 project in 6 Norma BR. It is very accurate and this caliber has more case capacity than the 6ARC to shoot the same bullets at higher speed (105/108 grains). I wonder what level of accuracy could be possible if it was chambered by Gavin ?

I tried ramshot TAC with 108's out of a 24" barrel AR and the velocity was a little low for my liking. Same with N140. I did do a ladder test with N150 and got 2660 fps with no pressure signs and that's where my velocity node hit which for my rifle is good because that's where it seems to like it for accuracy. That said I can't stick with that powder because I can't find it. lol A friend was very nice and loaned me some just to do a ladder test SO I'm going to try N540. I know, higher energy powder but hopefully more temp stable than leverevolution. Got good velocity out of leverevolution but the load I worked up (28.8 grs) jumped about 40 fps with a 25 degree temp change. I don't want/need to be guessing velocity during a match when the temp starts to rise during the day. Biggest con for the cartridge is case capacity/heavy bullets/extruded powder. Not that velocity is always what you should be looking at but use of extruded powders for temp stability won't get the velocity up there where people like to see it. Ball powder will but you'll sacrifice temp stability.

@gavintoobe how did you load those cases without the dies for 6mm ARC? You stated they where pre-primed brass; so did you just use a .243 die of some type to seat them? How did you get a crimp on it? Wouldn't that effect pressure?
@kevink552

So in the last two years we've learned a lot more about the 6mm arc, go to powder is LeverRevolution, while benchrest primers might work in a bolt gun they're a no go in the 6mm arc AR-15. A standard Federal small rifle primer will produce better chronograph number as well as groups.

Great video...! I'm a Grendel fan myself. Still looking for an apples to apples comparison between the Grendel and the 6mm ARC. Seen some articles online and Hornady videos comparing the two, but has been mostly qualitative in nature. Would like to see a comparison with identical length barrels, and as close as possible bullet weights between the two cartridges. I saw and article on the GUN university website that had a ballistic comparison... Grendel won the energy throughout, and the 6mm ARC only seemed to have a small speed advantage; not enough to make me give up the Grendel. The comparison wasn't "apples to apples" as much as it could have been though. Still looking for more concrete data to make an objective choice. Underwood Ammo for example has a 110gr Grendel load using Lehigh Defense Controlled Chaos bullets, listed at 2800 fps. Seen pics of hog hunts with that cartridge producing massive exit wounds. For hunting/defense purposes, can the 6mm ARC produce similar results? Looking forward to more test data. Thanks for putting great content out there!
