Future iPads with M5, M6, and M7, no matter how powerful these processors are, iPad OS will always hinder the full potential. That's where I think Apple is stuck because I don't think they want a fully functional OS for the iPad because it will hurt their Macbook sales.

It depends on what you are using it for. As a school teacher, the iPad Pro m4 has every app that teachers need. I tried MacBook Air. Took it back and stuck with my iPad. Touch screen, pencil pro Magic Keyboard does everything I need.

Not just hurt their MacBook sales, but also their app store sales. As mentioned in this video, apps are locked to the app store. You can't download apps through a web browser. So all the money Apple makes through app store payments would greatly diminish if they allow MacOS on any of their iPads. It's all about money.

Overall, it’s a good review, but I think the conclusion was a bit biased by comparing it to a MacBook Air. In my opinion, the iPad Pro generally excels in its intended purpose: it’s a hybrid device that’s between iPhone and MacBook and excels in tasks that are not practical or technically feasible on those other devices. Considering its premium features over the iPad Air and MacBook Air, I believe it’s also more accurate to consider it as a “computer alternative” to the MacBook Pro. Just like the MBPro, the majority of iPad Pro customers don’t require the extra power and features it offers over the base and Air models, but it’s still a nice-to-have.

The conclusion was brutal .. for me I chose the iPad over the MacBook simply because I can connect wherever I go using a cellular connection. Close second is the security as it supports MDM (mobile device management) and is enrolled in our work corporate system, and I could access all my emails and conduct Teams calls. Unlike the MacBook. For gaming, I got my Switch, and for reading, I got the Kindle. I know it's a lot to carry but it works for me.

The iPad m4 isn’t a computer, yet tech KZbinrs compare it to the MacBook. It has a distinct use case. I own a MacBook m3 pro and an iPad m4 pro. I’m typing on my iPad, which I mainly use for media due to its great display. I take notes and use my iPad as an extended display for my MacBook. Everyone has their own use case and you shouldn’t allow people to make decisions for you on what to buy. This guy only made this video to advertise that paper tablet thing playing like he was not sponsored.

Same for me for MDM - since I already have company-issued Windows laptop, and I don’t have that strong business justification for them getting me a MacBook, I can use my iPad as my another MDM device (aside from iPhone) that I can take to meetings faster, and other portable reasons (as long as I won’t need some Windows-exclusive apps like Power BI Desktop, SAP GUI, etc.)

The big frustration for me with the iPad is none of the browsers on the app store have extension support. That's a killer for me. Ublock in particular but there's got to be a half dozen extensions that I really hate to live without. But in particular ublock and sponsor block. Unhook.

Reasonable comparison with logical points. I personally used to trade in my M3 MacBook Pro for an M4 iPad Pro 13-inch model, along with a Mac mini M2 with 16GB of RAM. The reason behind this decision was my belief in the versatility of the iPad Pro, particularly its usefulness with Lumafusion, an app I used for my vlog production. However, I recently sold my Mac mini for an M2 MacBook Air 16GB RAM model and now use both devices simultaneously. When I’m outside, I use the iPad Pro as my primary screen, while at home, I use the MacBook Air as my main desktop with a Samsung display. This setup allows me to have a dedicated device for each task, but it does require me to spend more money to have two devices at once. Despite this, I believe the benefits of each device outweigh the cost, and they each serve a specific purpose. However, if I had to choose only one device, I would still opt for the iPad Pro.
@michaelhooper41795 күн бұрын
Josh, I totally agree with your assessment on if people need an iPad Pro or not. The feature limitations that apple puts into these devices is beyond annoying, especially considering how much capability the underlying architecture has. If they enabled multi-user logon, not only would Apple’s iPad Pro sales go down, but also their iPad and iPad Air sales which is a big reason why I think they don’t enable this.

Why do KZbinrs insist on comparing iPad Pro to MacBook Air, when the 14 inch MacBook Pro is the more appropriate comparison? Both “Pros” have advanced displays (mini LED and OLED) along with 120 hz Pro Motion and surround sound stereo speakers. The MacBook Air has NONE of these! Also, stop assuming that most buyers are deciding between these two devices. Many of us have both some flavor of MacBook AND some flavor of iPad! Would love to see some independent and original thinking among content creators, for a change.
@6MonthsLaterКүн бұрын
Fair point, we should have included a comparison with the MacBook Pro. The reason why I included the Air was more to address the questions I often see from those who are looking for a device they can type on, surf the web, check social media, watch content, and get work done on. A lot of time, people ask whether that device is an iPad or MacBook (sure some people may have both flavors, but a lot of people have limited budgets for their tech purchases and only budget for one device for these types of workloads). The MacBook Air for a lot of people is the right form factor, has comparable weight to the iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard, plus its much cheaper. However, you’re totally right about the upgrades you get with the MacBook Pro, the better screen, Pro Motion Display, etc. That would be interesting to compare against the iPad. - Josh

Another BIG problem with the iPad "Pro" is the inability to stream 2 audio sources at the same time. It can lead to a game of "whack-a-mole" tracking down the audio sources that are stopping your main audio from playing. It can be annoying. And it is an APPLE limitation, because sometimes iPadOS bugs out and DOES allow 2 audio sources to stream at once. It's an Apple-joke of an OS.

Thank you for being so critical of iPadOS and iOS in general. I can't stress enough how much I hate that my M4 iPad Pro, something that's supposedly more powerful than my M3 air, feels like a toy in comparison. And I hate myself even more because I bought it anyway because it's the best device that you can buy for the right niche that I'm on - rhythm games at 120hz. The displays on the previous iPad Pros had horrendous pixel response times, but this one feels like many light years better.

It seems that the new OLED iPads have not significantly changed the demand for tablets. We are in a saturated market, and OLED technology does not appear to be a game-changer that could spark a major sales uptick. This situation has unintended consequences, leading Apple to reconsider its OLED strategy. I've heard that they have already postponed the release of OLED MacBooks by a year, as they anticipate a similar lukewarm response to demand. The lacklustre reviews of these iPads have not helped the situation. One issue with reviews today is their inherently negative tone; they tend to judge products primarily on whether they are a worthy upgrade. This perspective overlooks the fact that tablets typically have a long upgrade cycle of about five years, making comparisons with last year's models unreasonable and unhelpful. Additionally, comparing iPads with MacBooks can be misleading, as each device serves different purposes. For instance, if I want to write or draw and come across reviews recommending a Mac over an iPad, I question the reviewer’s perspective. I believe these devices are complementary; one should choose the better iPad or MacBook based on individual needs, or buy the best of both if budget allows. In conclusion, my assessment is centred on understanding the needs of tablet users, comparing iPads to Android alternatives, and determining which iPad is suitable for you while considering budget constraints. iPad Pros cater to a niche market, with sales of only 7.5 million units a year, so they are not aimed at everyone; in fact, they serve a very small audience. Therefore, the negativity from individuals who do not grasp these points seems more like posturing than constructive feedback.

Me if the reasons Apple won’t add Mac OS to IPad capabilities is because of the battery. Not only does the IPad not have a cooling fan to keep it from overheating with how much they pack into the iPad and how much rearranging they had to do just to have the same 9-10 hour battery. If they added all the stuff a Mac was able to do the iPad would probably only last 4-5 hours of use before needing a charge.

Plus im just gonna wait till what people say in 2-3 more years and see if they get any burn in, for now, I’m gonna keep enjoying my M2! 😁

Some solid points, but I think it misses the mark to a degree. One, Apple has a range of iPads that cover price points from $350 to like $800 before you get to the iPad Pro. Two, "iPad" comes before "Pro". It's an iPad, but with all the features turned up to 11. It's not a suddenly new Mac+iPad category, and it doesn't seem to be designed as such. Three, it is a test bed for the best ideas and tech that end up getting pushed down the line to other iPads- Pencil Support, Keyboard cases, body style, M-Series chips, the screen tech, etc. When my iPad Pro launched, using the pencil was still exclusive to the Pro devices. It feels off to complain about what the Pro not adding enough to the base model or Air considering that those models wouldn't have these features if not for the Pro. Four, and I suspect this is many people, when I bought my Pro, it wasn't because I planned n replacing my Mac- I bought it because I deserve to have a few nice things, and it was the bleeding edge of what a tablet could be. Buy it for the screen, or the new keyboard case, or for it absolutely flying through everything for likely a decade. If it's not worth it to you, that's more than fine- it's why they have a whole lineup. Five, and this is my biggest gripe with this video... When it comes to the Scribe or Remarkable... You are extraordinarily limited in the apps you use. So, if you use Apple Notes, uh, no you don't. I can access my handwritten notes on all of my devices, and I can search them directly from Spotlight Search. There's also no way to scan a document on those devices to import to Notes for markup. Last thing I'll say: If you're using any computer or tablet as a productivity device either making money or running your household, amortize it over the time you'll be using it or the number of jobs you're gonna speed up with it. If you absolutely load up and drop $2K on an iPad Pro and you charge [absolutely bare bottom] $75 an hour... If you save two hours a week, it's completely paid off in like 3 months.
@6MonthsLaterКүн бұрын
Appreciate your feedback and insights around why you bought a Pro. Yeah, the WORST loss of money I’ve ever had. Nice to look at but.. Same thing with the iPhone. The software has some perks but still feels so disjointed and cumbersome and purposely held back considering the respective internals. All so Apple can keep straight lines on its product categories. Frankly, I couldn’t care less if Apple discontinued its MacBooks to fully flesh out its iPad pros. With a hybrid of macOS and iOS (which iPadOS really is), of course. You can keep iPadOS for regular iPads, but just make the pro versions pro (with the hybrid software). And offer the same sizes for both reg and pro versions, with the exception of maybe offering a 16” version for the pro. This will simplify Apple’s product offerings ensuring they’re not canibalizing sales. And just keep the desktop offerings the same. Maybe it’s just me.

The PROBLEM with this review right out of the gate IS - you skipped all the reasons to buy an ipad and went directly to using it as a portable laptop when it is not. You talked about the display then right into the keyboard which is nothing more than an accessory. After that you looked at features (briefly talking about pencil pro). ipad is NOT a mac - yet nearly everyone reviewing it seems to want to force it to be one and then review it as if it were. IT IS NOT a MAC! it IS an IPAD! it will never be a mac no matter how much you want it to be. What reviewers COULD do is look at what an ipad DOES and review it that way! I for one am an engineer, artist, and writer. I do a massive amount of note taking (and categorizing), drawing, sketching ideas (brainstorming), marking up documents in ADDITION to the MANY other things this tool can do - USING AN IPAD. I wouldn't review a phone and say, "but my pc can do that - ding!" This was a mac review where it kept pointing to how much better the mac whatever would be for less. And there again - the mac is NOT an ipad. Anyone watching this to see if the ipad can be a mac replacement might like it......but then change the title to "Can the ipad m4 be used as a mac replacement?" This was NOT an ipad review.
