I cut the cord this year and I am proud to say that I learned one important thing , the streaming service providers need me, I do not need them. So I am going subscribe only to the one that give me what I need at the price I can pay.

I wish someone would start a streaming service for people who DO NOT want sports, kid programing or shopping channels. A 'cafeteria' style assortment of channels would be ideal. I really resent paying for a bunch of stuff I don't want and have no interest in.

I have been using KZbin TV since 2020. You get all the local channels, plus alot of other channels. Unlimited cloud DVR. $64.99 a month. I tried the others & didn't really like them as much. You can customize your channel list how you want the order of your channels to appear (you have to do it on the computer though.) Plus KZbin TV allows you to add family members. They have their own cloud DVR as well. Plus you can suspend your KZbin TV subscription I think for up to 6 months and not lose what you have recorded in your Cloud DVR. Cable is crazy expensive & they charge for everything including the remote. It's ridiculous.

We have been sling customers on and off for years and really like blending that with an antenna to get locals for free. For local sports it covers football and we get NBA with league pass and it does the job for us. I’m fine with the ad supported cheaper plans, I think that allows people on a tight budget like us to still get streaming we enjoy and not have it break the bank. We are definitely cutting back on the number of services that can be covered with an antenna like paramount plus and peacock.

Great video, Michael! I like to hear these updates. My biggest frustration with the changes you mentioned is the “password crackdown”. This would make sense if services offered streaming on unlimited devices. However, most offer 2-4 streams for each account. I just feel like it shouldn’t matter where those streams are being watched. Maybe a better idea is to decrease the number of streams and let people stream their content while housesitting, traveling for work, etc

I got rid of Comcast at the beginning of Jan 2023 and now have Verizon 5G Home Internet for $50 per month with no taxes or fees. It has been working great. I bought a Roku streaming device and have KZbin TV, which will be going up to $73 per month. I am saving $20 per month over Comcast. I like sports and they have a lot of sports channels. I will never be going back to Comcast. T-Mobile also has Home Internet for $50 per month, but you will have to see what is available in your area.

Great, concise video Michael! I currently have HBO Max included with my AT&T 1Gbps Fiber plan; and I wonder if my AT&T bill will increase to offset a _possible_ rate hike due to throwing Discovery Plus into the mix. 🤔 In terms of cutting back; we cut KZbin TV a few months ago to save money. I would hope to see those Big Streaming giants start offering what we all have wanted all along. More customization in our packages. Philo has the right ideal of stream lining the service. But offer add on's like Local channels, Sports, News, Movies. This would really help those who watch there money on a tight budget.

Yes, it would. But the major companies that own the networks don't allow it. Company X will have it written into the contract that all of their networks must be in the base plan, take it or leave it. That's why we end up with bundles. I do have hope there will be more ways to customize in the future.

Happy New Year Michael! Good video, you really keep on top of things. No live TV services for me thank goodness, my antenna works just fine. I have ad free Hulu, only because the number of ads on there was ridiculous. I do have to say though, I just resubscribed to HBO Max this time their ad supported version and it's been a really nice surprise. Nothing like Paramount Plus or Hulu when it comes to ads, if only it could stay that way! I have zero interest in their Discovery merger. I would love to see them keep that as a separate option.

Yikes. Question, on whatever level of service you have from Hulu, do you see any hulu logo on the screen whenever you are watching actual content (i.e., not looking at the guide)?
@bikeny
@bikeny Жыл бұрын
For me, I got spoiled years ago when I had my cable package and I didn't see any logos on the screen or suffer with ads with showtime, starz, cinemax, and hbo. Yes, the CBS's of world desecrated the screen with their logos and on-screen text, but they were 'free.' Then the premium packages started doing it and slowly but surely I canceled each one. If I'm paying every month for unedited movies/tv shows, I don't want to see logos and on-screen text. And that is why at this point, I have Netflix (DVDs and Streaming), Amazon Prime (just their real prime, not the tie-ins which aren't part of the account), and recently, Paramount+ (free for now, I think it's limited time thing with Amex). None of them have logos or on-screen text or commercials. If I had to give up something, I'd give up the ad-free, but anything with on-screen text or logos is no-go, not-gonna-happen kind of thing.

Got me thinking about how my viewing habits have changed. Used to watch one or two network prime time feeds each night. Now I watch maybe three network shows a week. The rest is a selection of scripted shows from various services. Friday it was the season 3 finale of Jack Ryan, episode 5 of "His Dark Materials" season 3, and an hour or so of KZbin hopping. Last night it was the latest "The Rookie" and more KZbin. (Free KZbin, not ad-free or TV.) Cutting the cord also cut the habits. I watch less TV, but more of what I actually like.

As an older but tech savvy person, my tv cable package increased by 33%-no negotiating. I switched to streaming and find it extremely painful. I’ve tried a number of services and have cancelled them all but Netflix. There is clearly an issue with tracking what I’ve watched AND when subscribing through third parties it is hard to figure out usernames and passwords or where to cancel. My cable operator no longer shows cable tv packages (as I suspected) forcing people to streaming and causing increased buffering. I’m watching less content and enjoying it less and less. You are correct in saying by the time you pay subscriptions, you are spending as much if not more than cable and will likely require new hardware to accommodate the streaming (my household is small so I can’t imagine a house with several people streaming at once). I refuse to use other people’s usernames/passwords.

Happy new year Michael! After seeing your video & reading the Variety article you mentioned I’m wondering when the conglomerates will start shuttering networks. You kind of see it with WBD turning HLN into all reruns. The cable/streaming retransmission business is huge for their bottom lines.

As for live sports what will happen in the near future, ALL of these streaming services will want a piece of the action. So each streaming service and their affiliate networks will want 1 or 2 games/per team, college & professional, so customers will have to subscribe to ALL the streaming services plus cable tv to watch every one their teams games (see the Big Ten new Tv contract spread across 8 networks!) It won’t be less expensive to watch sports, but a lot more expensive, coming soon. Eventually to a pay per game system. That’s when I stop watching and following sports completely

I suspect prices actually will continue to rise for live TV (or Cable 2.0) services, resulting in some people dropping the 2.0 service and adding cable back into their homes. Watch for news stories with headlines like, "IS STREAMING DEAD???" (SPOILER: it's not, there will just be some moves back and forth from customers for best price. Even if they drop KZbin TV for example and add cable, they may still be subscribed to Netflix, or Disney+ or something else.) The word for 2023, I believe, is going to be "shakeout." I'm not sure all of these services can remain major players, and it will be interesting to see if more mergers are on the way.

The TV portion of a cable bill is roughly $150 once you add all the fees & device rentals. You can get Hulu with live TV for $70 a month or YTTV for $65 a month. Why would you pay more than double & it’s not as if cable pricing is going to remain stagnant.

Michael, this is a informative video. I was referred to your channel by Tyler the Antenna Man. He assisted me in selecting a great antenna for live stations after Dish had two of our favorite channels of the air for a substantial time last year. Works great! Currently, we have Netflix, the Disney Bundle , Apple TV and just started KZbin TV. Takes a little effort for using different menus for each service. I would like to see an option from KZbin TV for a lower price plan without the live TV. The only streaming year-round streaming service I have is KZbin TV. I only watch network TV shows and cable news. $65 per month is TOO MUCH to pay for what I watch. I would gladly give up all the other things on KZbin TV, especially sports, for a lower price. If Google still wants their $65 per month, let me drop all the channels I don't watch and give me KZbin Premium to make up the difference. They know that would be fair. P.S. I use other streaming services for only one month per service per year. I've signed up to Hulu, Paramount+, and Amazon Video when they release new seasons of select series and/or movies. Netflix, HBO, and Apple TV have some interesting offerings that I might watch this year.

I've already cut back on streaming. I'm an OG original Netflix guy, from when it was dvd's by mail. But when they raised the price to $20 last spring, after just raising the price a year or so before, I was OUT. There are those that will say at that price, it's still worth it, but to go from $7.99 to almost $20 so fast, plus cracking down on password sharing (WHEN THEY USED TO BE PRO PASSWORD SHARING!!!), it's like, where will it end? Like the guy in this video mentions, they can't just keep raising prices every year and think they will grow. They will raise them and LOSE CUSTOMERS! At this rate, I'll get a streaming service for a month, binge what I've missed, cancel, then wait a year to binge again. I DON'T need to be part of the zeitgeist and watch a particular show when everyone else is watching it...

I'm paying about $100/month on Dish, who I have been with for nearly 27 years. Most of all of our household viewing is now 'streaming' The viewing we now do via Dish are news channels and maybe three or four others. What I am now paying for is skipping commercials, especially the news channels where a four minute break is the norm. We watch almost nothing "live", delaying any show using a formula of 15mins/hr of viewing time. I know some paid streaming services allow me to 'skip' content BUT the damn dish remote has that fantastic :30 forward and :10 back button. It's those two buttons I pay some $100 a month for. Is there any service that replicates this function?

I have cable TV. I have had it for years. Pay $186 including internet. Yeah, expensive. I get every channel in HD and, like most cable people, have lots and lots of channels... that I don't watch. I literally regularly watch roughly 3 channels -- one of them is KZbin, Inspirational (Westerns), and Reel (Cops). In the fall and winter I love football (it's gotten worse over the years -- I don't care for the excuses, rhetoric, and the it's all about them attitude of some players), but the best channel I have found is NFL Red Zone -- I get all the great plays of all the games and, absolute best part, no commercials. So, four channels. $140 for four channels on three TVs -- crazy.

Michael - I generally agree with what you say, but stating that FUBO-TV has "hidden fees" is not true. FUBO is adding a large number of RSN (Bally Sports) in February 2023, and everyone in selected areas will have the $10.99 for one, and $13.99 for two (as it is in the Nashville area): BUT THEY ARE NOT CHARGED FOR THEM NOW. I received notice from FUBO on January 9, 2023 regarding the $5.00 rate increase, and FUTURE increase for all FUBO customers in affected areas when the RSN becomes available to us (February, 2023). When Bally Sports South and Southeast are added, I'm sure they will show up as part of the FUBO fees. The wife and I have been happy FUBO customers for a long time, and we never watch soccer. I watch baseball (and happily soon Atlanta Braves baseball on Bally), hockey, and golf. We get all the locals channels, cable news/business, "entertainment" channels, and many others that keep both of us happy. FUBO is NOT HIDING ANYTHING!
@MichaelSaves
@MichaelSaves Жыл бұрын
I am glad you're happy with FuboTV. I consider their RSN fee hidden because it's not included in the plan price or listed on the plan page. I do agree they were transparent about the recent rate increase and changes to the RSN fees. I covered those here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sH6tdaKOds-KocU

It's just a matter of timing: FUBO doesn't charge for something until it happens/is available. Today happens to be my billing date, so they did charge the $5 general increase they advised me about on Jan. 9th. But they did NOT charge me the new $13.99 RSN fee, and won't until February's billing, because access to those 2 Bally Sports channels won't be available to me until February. When I can access those 2 channels, I will be charged for them..

ESPN plus seems to be carrying ESPN events now, so that makes it easier to cut the cord. I've been playing around with my Antenna and adding a service like Pluto for news and weather. Plex/ Live channels for Android and Channels dvr are good for that if you have an Hdhomerun. I believe you can do it with Amazon and their OTA DVR, not sure about Tablo. This seems to fill my channel surfing itch. I love YTTV, but it's over $73 for a few channels I watch. If you are willing to give up the A talent broadcasters, there are options.

The #1 thing I miss from out satellite subscription is consistent sports. But it was just way too expensive. We have 5 paid streams for $40 a month. We also have Prime and Apple TV+ but they are included in other services. Valuable to be sure. Also have an antenna primarily to watch football. Would not pay another fee for news. Sometimes I miss Netflix but the programing was becoming too socially/politically motivated and the cost kept going up.

_"Sometimes I miss Netflix but the programing was becoming too socially/politically motivated..."_ I always wonder what people mean by this. What "socially/politically motivated" programming do you see on Netflix? I see very little. It's certainly not like it's so overwhelmingly "socially/politically motivated" that there isn't anything else to watch. And, of course, nobody forces you to watch a program you don't want to watch. Specifically what shows are you talking about?
@paulreilly4510
@paulreilly4510 Жыл бұрын
@@TheRealLaughingGravy You are right. "socially/politically motivated" is too charged a comment. I do tend to be very sensitive to cultural shifts that are driven in the "entertainment" industry. While the poor performance of Disney can be linked to shallow character development that seems to be the result of choosing to virtue signal in place of good writing, there is a case to be made that the power of media is an important tool for social change. Be that as it may; I left Netflix more than two years ago and can't remember any specifics. I do recall that the general shift toward more Netflix content was part of my motivation, especially when you think about deals like the one with the former President and First Lady.

there are a couple of things that i would point out: 1. the whole password crackdown (only for Multiple households) my opinion is, look, people want a Civilized share of being subscribed to Netflix if they do allow people in the same household but it certainately would Not look good on paper if it happened on other streaming services my point is, having people deal with silly arguements over these password shares in Multiple households in Not a diplomatic scenario is Like having to Put up with a fire that you put out, when someone Puts effort to try to wrangle people into At least one household and Not multiple, you dont have them splintered into multiple accounts unless it is Meaningful for Outside of the Main household 2. Listen to Customers about Adding new channels Rather than trying to Raise Prices of the actual KZbin tv service, they should at least try to add new channels i explained to KZbin tv, that they Need to add a whole Bunch of classic tv channels (Not just the rest of the weigel channels including Metv and Heroes and icons) But laff, grit, antenna tv, this tv, as well as a game show channel called Buzzr channels Like G4 did not Perform successfully due to having a Poorly run rebooted cast of people for some of their shows and while some people do like some cable news channels, im one of those people Who is Strongly Against only One reccomended news channel that if youtube tv would listen about adding these classic tv channels, it would help and that cable channel i keep getting ridiculous reccomendations of, is Fox News i would rather have reccomendations for shows like Night court, Macgyver (classic) , Get smart, etc basically any show people would enjoy than having to listen to these fox news channels, Which are Not appealing to people who want classic tv programming in other words, there are some cable news channels like msnbc and cnn that are at least respectful, but fox news is in the "out of Line" category , and youtube needs to reccomend channels like the classic tv channels that people would actually watch for fun 3. nfl on youtube and youtube tv i actually quite agree with this it is quite interesting 4. discovery plus added to hbomax i have zero intrest in them wanting to combine Hbomax with discovery plus they need to keep the two seperate , cause i think hbomax is a good service On its own discovery plus on the other hand, is Not a great service and My point is: combining the two would anger consumers it would be a Dumb idea for discovery to Merge with hbomax 5. free services with ads free services are Great
