Gaby is certainly NOT the only person who forgets to breathe. This phenomenon happens quite often in the neurodivergent community, and can actually be tracked down and explained by the concept of Interoception, which is defined as being a set of senses that the body utilizes to track it's own inherent needs. I personally have issues with knowing that I'm hungry/thirsty, tired, and need to use the restroom, and OFTEN don't know these things are a problem until they hit "Critical" AKA I'm STARVING, DEHYDRATED, EXHAUSTED (Often to the blacking out stage), and DOING THE UNCOMFORTABLE RESTROOM SHUFFLE. I've seen a few other comments explaining this, but I didn't see anyone point out the "Interoception" aspect, so I HOPE that this helps some folks understand their own concerns a a bit better!

Yep, came here to say this. The fact that my mind manages to go so fkng far away that I forget to breathe is still insane to me, even after 24 years with this, hahaha. The "hum, I'm shaking, I must eat" daily thing too. The water one, I "fixed" by religiously carrying a water bottle with me everywhere I go, so I drink out of habit now, not because of thirst, but because "hum, this is just something I do now," hahaha.

Just wanted to let Gabby know, I have autism and adhd. I forget to breathe a lot and do the weird gasping thing. It's literally just a thing where your body can't communicate with itself. Same thing with not realising your hungry or need to pee until it gets really bad. Our brains are just dumb and don't tell us shit

I was once talking to a friend who was listening pretty intently and noticed their chest wasn’t moving and I was like “are you breathing?” And they were just like “*GASP* THANK YOU! I didn’t realise I wasn’t breathing!” And became aware that sometimes people breath shallowly or sometimes not at all as a weird survival instinct when scared or in anticipation as a way to not make yourself look alive so whatever is going to happen won’t attack you because you’re probably already dead.

Gabby, I also have that same issue with breathing minus the panic attack part. I'll often be either relaxing on the couch or doing something with a lot of focus and just suddenly realize I haven't taken a breath in nearly a minute or so. Then comes the massive gasping breath lol. It happens at least a few times a day to me. It's gotten to the point that I periodically check that I'm actively breathing at the moment. Sort of a self wellness check. We still breathing? Yes? Good. XD

I have a condition that causes horrible pain on the right side of the body and one of the lovely effects it has on my breathing is that I actually have to think of every inhale or I might stop breathing until passing out or start feeling lightheaded and remember to breath. Falling sleep is annoying because you are not supposed to think anything so... I kinda just have to stop breathing sometimes so I can fall sleep and the "automatic" system kicks in. So there is atleast one more person in the world who has to think about breathing.
