My husband was laid off and out of work for 3 years. I worked a full-time job and 2 consulting gigs to pay our bills. It taught me to never have expenses that will exceed a single income. Hubby and I have been consumer-debt free since 2008 and it's really nice. We track our expenses which shows us exactly how much we spend and set limits for food/eating out/booze and have a goal to put 25-30% into a high-yield savings. We are trying to buy our first place and we are in our mid 50's.

I only recently realized how important it is to track your spending..... Made a budget for myself and figured I could just "play it by ear" for the first year or so. A few months ago I took a look at my cc statements from last year and found I was spending over $500 per month in unnecessary purchases. You might think I'm just dumb for not realizing how much I was overspending but those $20-$50 purchases really can add up without you ever realizing. Especially if your budget is aimed toward living below your means

Auto pay has made us wealthy. Take the thought out of it and pay yourself first. If I had to remember to set aside money every paycheck or month, I don't think it would have happened. Too many other things creep into life, and it would have been forgotten more months than not. It took us almost 28 years but now retirement at 55 in 5 months is happening. It can be done.

I started putting more money into retirement accounts a few years ago with the idea that I’d pull back my investments for a few months each year and use that money to take a vacation. But I haven’t been able to bring myself to do so yet because I realized that with compounding interest over the next 20 years until retirement, I can take one trip now, or 2-3 trips in retirement with that money. Or more if I keep investing my annual cost of living raises into my 401k. It’s a bit addictive to see an actual number besides a 0 in my 401k. 😂 Perhaps this is a strategy folks could use if, like me, you enjoy spending all your dough on experiences today at the expense of having some fun in your golden years.

Yeah. The bullshit excuse is don't do anything outside of cost of living, and when you do, it's still not worth jack shit.

Haha! Louis Vuitton!! Great observations and recommendations. Outstanding information!! I’m a 1099 sub-contractor for the first time, I’m researching what tax season will mean to me. Thank you - great channel. Sharing with everyone I know.

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking to stop being poor, but you reminded me that more money equals more problems and now I have clear guides of how to stay down and out. Thanks again. Please keep making videos. Have you ever considered doing a collaboration with Stephen Graham?

Considering the economic situation I ask,?? How can we save our families and friends from financial slavery. It's getting more scary how people are really suffering these days.I can't fold and watch people around me suffer.

You know I'd like to save but I'd also like to do stuff outside of the gas pump and groceries. At this rate, saving is pathetically slow and feels hopeless. Essentially pushing me to financial suicide.

I used to shop at the Big H store with orange boxes and still put hundreds of thousands in the bank in savings. I could care less if anyone is impressed or wants to be my friend because I have nice things. I buy them because I can afford them and I like them.

Very good idea, how to spot that Romeo or Juliet who sees You as their paycheck. Too many Millennials and Gen Zoomers playing that game now.
