The thing is e sinks eventually, don't care to do the maths, but a half ton of metal (we will say titanium + gel layer + undersuit + John, but mostly the metal and John) will stay buoyant in water for a little while. But honestly, in Halo 2 he falls into water where the Grave Mind picks him up so he can clearly survive under water (though the near-complete opposite he also jumped into space and survived in the same game). How would the player get back up though? So game design says just kill the player instantly so they can get back to the game.

Usually it's you can't swim until the sequel. In Halo it's you can't swim after the sequel. Even Halo 5! Make like power armor, and walk on the bottom of the ocean.

I am on my way to obtaining a history degree and I can confirm that Andy is right in saying that in the Olden Days, otherwise known to some revisionist historians as "The Good ol' Days Era", many people could not swim, not even sailors. There is also Cole MacGrath from Infamous, although he has an actually good reason for this. Cole powers basically revolve around the fact he is a giant human battery that can discharge utterly massive amounts of electrical power from his body. Electricity plus giant bodies of water don't tend to mix, so whatever abilities that allow Cole to live with the electrical potential of a nuclear power plant without somehow frying his internal organs gets screwed up if Cole ever takes a dip in the ocean.

At 4:25, since Christian graveyards are established on consecrated ground I imagine that the water could indeed be considered blessed. But in that case so would the entire grounds of the graveyard, meaning that any fetish-wear clad lady vampires crossing its walls would instantly immolate, or at the very least let off a few clouds of smoke accompanied by the smell of roasted flesh. In that same Halo 3 mission, Master Chief survives while he's in water, in the part of the level where the pelican takes heavy damage. It's just before that forest full of the jackals with carbines/beam rifles. You can be completely submerged in the water and walk under water in that entire area and walk around.

I disagree with Master chief dying of water, because later in the same mission as the gameplay is showing, that there is a river that isn't that deep, and you can go in it without dying, but you sink to the bottom of it. (Its the only river in the game you don't instantly die in.) I think why Master chief does die in every single other river/lake/ocean is because it's out of bounds.

+SehrBA It has a very good story, the dialogue from John often has double meanings (like in Romeo and Juliet) the gameplay itself is ok, but the pacing is very good and it knows that it's only meant to be taken semi-seriously, some of the main characters in the game even joke about the plot. It has a lot of appeal, it can be wild west game or it can be a somewhat comical parody of wild west films and games. Most people enjoy it because it was an attempt at a somewhat untouched genre in gaming, and it showed that there's promise for more games like it in the future. And, as a sidenote, it did have some of the best visuals in gaming for its time, it still holds up very well today.

According to Assassin's Creed developers Altaïr was capable of swimming but a glitch in the Animus 1.28 caused ancestors to drown when they come in contact with water. This glitch was corrected in the Animus 2.0 which Desmond Miles uses in Assassin's Creed II to relive Ezio's memories or Ezio would drown if Desmond still used the Animus 1.28 at the opening cutscene of the second game.

Altaïr has heavy gear on how which might make swimming next to impossible for someone who isn't experienced. besides, it's the Animus's fault Altaïr can't swim, he was an experienced swimmer but the Animus can't handle swimming. 2. In GTA 3 he is in a city river which often has strong currents which will be hard to battle, especially if you have a lot of clothes and gun with you. 3. Rayne would have what is called "water allergy" in the real world. an old relative had water allergy, when her skin came in contact with water she got rashes and burns. now in the game it is obvious that Rayne is only "allergic" to large amounts of water and not the small amounts found in rain. 6. Brutal Legend is set in a bunch of metal albums, who know what monsters are hiding in the water!! have you ever seen a metal album cover? then you'd know that you don't wanna go in the water. 7. Master Chief has no good reason for not being able to swim... he can dropp from space but not swim.

Actually both for GTA3 and Assassins Creed they were explained: For the former it was said that the water is too toxic to survive contact with it and in Assassins Creed it was said that the Animus could not be programmed to allow swimming.

They did later explain that in Assassin's creed one the animus you were using had a bug that couldn't handle water and it would wrongly confuse it for a death scenario.

+Amaranthus616 He can't swim and flat out sinks to the bottom. In just a couple of seconds the panic music kicks in, and if there's no bubble, he dies. In the modern games, big bodies of water brings instant death. Hell in the abomination known as Sonic Boom, barely touching the water kills him. On top of that, he's hydrophobic meaning literally and mentally its his worst enemy.

Sonic can't even swim in the Mario & Sonic crossover series without the assistance of a life jacket or buoyancy aid. It's especially embarrassing when he has to doggy-paddle his way to olympic gold.
