Point number 8: "Wearing a watch sends a signal to clients and coworkers that you care about time." And this is especially important if their time is important to them. You wear a watch for the exact same reason you comb your hair, shine your shoes, or brush your teeth. Or refrain from getting your face and hands tattooed. Of course, this may not matter to you if you never interact with clients or if you work somewhere in the back room. Or if you are an unemployed artist. But in some professions, it is a mandatory sign of professionalism. Have you ever seen a doctor or nurse NOT wearing a watch? Or an attorney, or a banker? You don't need a wristwatch to sit home and play video games, but you do need one if you want to make a good impression in the workplace. When you are ready to grow up, you will start wearing a wristwatch.

For me it's a good way of checking time in more professional settings. When I'm in an interview and take a second to think, I usually have my arms on the table so I can look down at my watch and pace myself. Like on longer questions regarding my experience, I would ask for 30 seconds or so and think to myself "10 seconds to brainstorm bullet points for 3 major relevant experiences". When I'm out at a nice dinner or a formal, I'd prefer to keep my phone out of sight as much as possible and just refer to my watch. It's courteous to those you're spending time with and it feels classier. Perhaps I'm trying too hard to be sophisticated or I'm looking into it too much, but those are just my 2 cents on wearing a watch.
@planetxtk7567
@planetxtk7567 3 жыл бұрын
I agree. You could tell people you're just checking the time on your phone, but it's neater to check your watch, in my opinion. It's a sign of a neat personality. Like someone who takes pride in the little things such as a janitor or when a cashier wraps your bags up nicely. It's a nice feeling to others and you. The culture of wearing a watch is so intriguing to me.
@chriskelly509

I used to check the time on my phone a lot,and now having a watch definitely limits my screen time on my phone and it doesn't make me look like I'm always on my phone when I just want to check the time, especially in a professional setting where you're not supposed to be on your phone or when being on your phone looks rude, I.E.checking the time on your phone during church.

+Maxwell Nothing wrong with diesel watches, go with what you like. I do recommend that you look over other options tho. Since diesels main thing isn't watches. If you want a watch that whit stands much and have a high quality i would say seiko or victorinox. Not to expensive and good quality. Victorinox did a watch called inox, it says to with stand much pressure. Its a nice looking watch. Go with whatever rocks your boat but the watches from companys that doesn't care about or have a passion for just watches may not hold for so long. Have a good day :)

Reason 8: CHARACTER - A watch is part of a definition of the person who is wearing it. You can define someone's taste and style by what they are wearing. Whether if is a simple dress watch, a sporty G-Shock, a gold Rolex, a complicated piece like Breguet, a plastic quartz , rare vintage model, or a high-end piece like Patek. Reason 9: STATUS SYMBOL Reason 10: CHICK-MAGNET :) Reason 11: THE BOND - Watch wearers and collectors have special bond with they pieces. Just like car enthusiasts love their cars. Also a watch can be passed down from father to son, creating a special connection. Reason 12: JEWELRY - A nice watch can be a man's only piece of jewelry. And a fashion statement. Reason 13: A DRESS WATCH - Every nice suit isn't complete without a nice dress watch. Reason 14: EMERGENCY FUND - If you are traveling aboard and happen to lost all your cash and credit cards, you can sell or pawn your watch and save you a lot of trouble.

+John Wick How could it ever? We just have a _wide_ approximation of the current time. Even the most accurate clock ever created cannot keep it (it's esteemed to lose 1s every 15 billions years), let alone commercial watches. Just consider the time between reading the time from an accurate source (which will anyway be behind) and setting it on your watch: seconds and seconds lost!

About 15 years ago or so, I purchased a Seiko Kinetic at the local jewelery store's dog days sale. The thing still keeps within 1-second every six-months according to the National Bureau of Standards monitor, I only adjust it at Daylight to Standard time and back. I've been wearing analog chronigraphs since the early '70s, mostly Seikos. Had an Omega Flightmaster that was stolen from me in college. Saved up for a year to buy it -$400.00 at the time! Several more Seiko chronographs and now I wear a Buliva Marine Star. Watches were absolutely indespensable for me, both on the job and off. Especially working rotating shifts. They enabled me to not only keep track of the time, but enabled me to better manage my time. I'm retired now, but keeping track of time is still important and wearing a watch is the one thing I brought into my retirement life with me. Time, to me, is too important to trust to a $2.00 digital watch. This shows no respect for time - the ONLY thing we are given at birth.

A $2 digital quartz watch tells time more accurately than a $20,000 Rolex with an automatic movement. Being into watches is great but no need to be pretentious about it.

@@lloydirving6209 Good point! I didn't mean to come across as pretentious or elitist, but as a 3 time heart-attack survivor, I have a heightened respect for time. Agreed, an inexpensive digital IS more accurate than a $20,000 Rolex mechanical and I wouldn't buy one even if I could afford one (Trust me, I can't). My meaning was, for me, I now have more respect for time than I did before. Wearing a watch, any watch, tells me that person also respects time, theirs and other people's.

I own 4 watches. All are mechanical 24 jewel movement. Why? Mainly for what they are and not so much what they do. They are nothing short of mechanical marvels. They remind me of a simpler, slower paced lifestyle. In this world of digital over kill, they are something that takes me back to my childhood when all watches were mechanical. Simply put...they are my little mechanical side kicks. With me wherever I go . They never need a battery and will basically run forever as long as they stay wound. The inside of a mechanical watch, to me, is nothing short of a mechanical ballet of moving parts.

I personally love my Invicta Pro Diver. It has a flame infused crystal and screw down crown, waterproof up to 1000 meters. It's very stylish with NATO wrist bands but the silver band that it comes with looks fairly nice as well. I like the automatic movement, even if it isn't as accurate as a quartz movement primarily because of the history of the mechanism itself.

"What happens after a few hours with these things? Or maybe 8 hours if you've got a good one?" Is he seriously implying that smartphones die after 8 hours or less? Maybe if you only stream videos with your brightness on max for 8 hours straight. And the second point, about how it takes ~1.5 mins to get your phone out of your pocket. Again. Are you kidding? Or just seriously mentally handicapped. If it really takes you over a minute to get your phone out of your pocket then you probably shouldn't be carrying one at all. What are you going to do if someone calls you? Your phone only rings for 30 seconds. That's it. Also, with the danger that he was talking about checking the time and driving, on my droid turbo I created an activation phrase, and when I say "droid, activate," it turns on. From there I can ask it anything from "what time is it" to "how much is the tuition for Stanford" and it will annunciate the answer.

I agree with your 7 reasons, but I started wearing a traditional watch for another reason. For many years I did not wear any watch and like many of us, I used my smartphone for telling time. Then some time ago I got a smartwatch from a company named after a fruit. I personally felt that the watch is just another information outlet, similar to modern phones. But most importantly, I caught myself paying way too much attention to the watch's notifications whenever I was trying to spend quality time with someone. I would be in a lunch meeting with a colleague, or sitting with my family, and there it would go, "buzz, buzz" and grab my attention! I thought from other people's perspective about how rude I was being every time I paid attention to the watch; almost as if my time was too important to spend with them. I gave up on the smartwatch after a few months and started to wear a traditional watch just for the purpose of telling time... there, serenity!

A great video. You are bang on with your thoughts about the benefits of wearing a watch. It is so obvious, but always worth repeating in our smart media dominated world. I became interested in quality automatic watches about a year ago, having previously worn only cheap digital and quartz watches. It is a balance between spending and passion though, with other real life costs, and there are a lot of watch snobs about. The best advice seems to be - at least one decent watch for (office type) work/social occasions and one daily "beater watch' for robust work/activities. My child has only recently started wearing a watch. It is a simple three hand quartz watch, but great to see the next generation appreciating the simplicity of the wrist watch despite the IPhone. I intend to leave at least one decent watch to hand down.

I just bought my second Rolex, so yeah... I'm definitely a watch guy. I've never heard of Fifth Watches, and I can't say I'm impressed. They don't list prices on their idiotic website, but whatever they are charging, I can guarantee you it is too much. If I had any advice to offer to those looking to get into watches it is this: 1. Be conservative. Stick with watches in the 40-42 mm range. For sports watches (eg: Rolex Submariner, Omega Speedmaster), most guys can go up to 44, but dress watches like the ones this company produces should be in the 38-40 mm range. Their watch is 43 mm, which is way too large. Avoid at all costs. You will look ridiculous. 2. You don't need to spend a lot to get a great watch. Seiko and Orient both sell excellent watches at very affordable prices. There are also smaller boutique brands like Steinhart, Squale, Helson, Helios and many, *many* more which offer high quality watches with automatic movements at competitive prices. If you really want to buy a watch (nominally) produced in Australia, consider instead the Melbourne Watch Company. Their offerings are far more sophisticated and are priced right. Which brings me to my third point: 3. Never buy a watch with a quartz movement (i.e., one which operates on a battery). Only buy watches with mechanical or "automatic" self-winding movements. Trust me on this one.

@Trotsky1981
@Trotsky1981 9 жыл бұрын
Quartz movements - especially cheap quartz movements - are not built to last. If you want something disposable, quartz is fine. A mechanical watch, if cared for properly, will last a lifetime. Plus, the second hand has a smooth sweeping motion instead of the 'tick' associated with quartz watches, which looks pretty cool. Having said that, finding an automatic chronograph - which is more complicated than a regular automatic movement and therefore more expensive - in the same price range as the Marine Star might prove a challenge.

I love watches and I think they should be worn more, butI can't agree with your points. Honestly, if you're not into watches and times pieces as a whole, then the only real reasons to wear a watch are looks. But if you are and can see the value behind mechanical vs. quartz, the different number of complications, the tradition behind that watch maker, then the reasons become something more like why a person tuned into the art world gets a painting. Your reasons were exaggerated for the average person. It's not that much more simple or convenient than taking out your phone and they are pointless as heirlooms if the person inheriting it does not appreciate watches in the same way. I have it in my will that my collection is to be sold off immediately and money put into college funds for family members.

Maybe this isn't the place for this comment, but then again this si a video AND a commercial, so all's fair right? IS it just me or I do the huge watches of recent years look ridiculous? They make the wearer look like they are desperate for attention: "Look at me! Look at the watch I am wearing!". I mean, what's up with this silly trend? For a century or more, wristwatches have been a reasonable size. Now they are width of a man's whole friggin' wrist!
@RealMenRealStyle
@RealMenRealStyle 9 жыл бұрын
+da Bob It really depends on one's preference - but if you still want the classy watches. It's still available. And there are certain rules about wearing the right size for your wrist.
@TinkyTheCat
@TinkyTheCat 9 жыл бұрын
+da Bob It's partially the current style, but it's also tied to function in many cases. Kinetic / self-winding watches are often larger due to the additional moving parts inside. Satellite watches, watches with multiple hands/faces, etc. etc. As many modern watches have added functionality beyond simply keeping time they've trended larger in order to accommodate all that functionality. I suspect adding features is how most watch makers are attempting to maintain relevance in the smartphone era. Being a rather slim man, it can be frustrating.
@BobC59
@BobC59 9 жыл бұрын
First, I have to agree with the frustration as a man of fairly thin wrists. Finding these pie-plate sized things to put on my arm feels crazy and looks even worse. Second, and as much as I appreciate your comment, watches ARE NOT bigger due to the kinetic/self-winding mechanisms. I am wearing on my skinny wrist - as I type this - a very attractive, very SLIM watch from +/- 1962 called an Omega Constellation. It was my grandfather's, then my fathers, and now it is mine. Its is maybe 36mm in diameter and quite slim to boot. Oh, and did I mention it is self-winding?!? I used to think that watch was amazing as a young boy, back when you had to WIND UP watches to make them work, but the point here is that kinetic powered watches have been around a long, long time -- well before the "pie plates" came along in recent years :) ALso many years ago were multi-function watches - - nice, smallish watches called chronometers. Maybe its cheaper to make them with big parts, but certainly not necessary. Look inside those huge watches and you will find LOTS of open space. Most watch mechanisms are tiny and take up very little space (in any dimension). Its all about style, not a need for more space, that these monstrosities exist. (Ever see an Apple watch? Do you know all those things can DO within 38mm?!!). By the way, you failed to mention my own theory for the larger watches which rings true with me and my generation: You can SEE them more easily with older eyes!! Best regards, Bob
@TinkyTheCat
@TinkyTheCat 9 жыл бұрын
+da Bob Thanks for the info. I wound up looking into them further; I had no idea self-winders actually date back to just after WW1. Part of what actually got me interested in watches was that I remember my great uncles and grandfathers having old heirloom timepieces but by the time I reached adulthood they'd all passed away and the timepieces had been long lost, sold, or broken. I have a self-winding Seiko that's about 40mm diameter and that's one of (if not the) smallest of the type I've seen. It's a heavy thing (weighs twice as much as even similarly sized watches do.. so, imagine a barbell) and doesn't appear to have lots of spare room in it, but perhaps they took a cue from McDonald's and supersized everything. ;-) I suppose it was just optimistic rationalization on my part, but the ugly truth will only make finding decently-sized watches even more frustrating now.
@BobC59
@BobC59 9 жыл бұрын
Oh well, didn't mean to go down a depressing route :) I wrote out of frustration, finding watches I liked on Amazon only to find they were much bigger than I wanted. Saw your comment after only having just pulled out my dad's Omega, so it was fresh in my mind and I had to say something. Its amazing the "micro-technology" there was so many years ago, isn't it? I just ended up with another Seiko (solar this time!) that I'm trying to get accustomed to at 40mm. Looks nice but a tad big for my taste. If it lasts 20 years like the last one (still working), I guess I'll be happy. I'm not a jewelry wearer per-se, so its all about telling time and reliability for me :) Cheers! Bob

I appreciate watches because of the relationship between humans and machines. For me a digital watch is lifeless and lacks the simplicity that a watch offers.A mechanical/automatic watch can not live on its own. You must care for it, feed its mainspring every day. When it gets unwell you must take it to the horologist expert for a check up and to receive treatment. It is a mechanical pet whose only service it can provide its owner is its closest approximation to the current time.Its style is a reflection of the owners attitude. It matters not what others think. But it does matter what you say about yourself and what you say to others. A watch is an extension of that philosophy.For those who express contempt are missing the point. Those who are belittling do not understand that these reasons are personal and are lacking in empathy.

You have to go mechanical!!!! Quartz watches have no soul.

+Weston Powers I own both Automatic and Quartz watches. My Vostok Europe Limousine GAZ-14 Chronograph is a Quartz, as is my Tudor Monarch. Nothing wrong with having Quartz watches, especially if you use them as your everyday beater watch and only on occasion wear an Automatic/Manual winding watch.

I stopped wearing watches about 15 years ago because it ruins the best time of your day. A watch is surely good for work, but I don't work in the forest or in the ocean, I sit in front of my computer or in the car and it would be less convenient to look to my wrist instead of the clock directly in front of me. But if I go to friends, to a party or to the park I definitely don't want to stress myself by checking the time all the time. I just leave a party when if it feels right to leave - not because the time is telling me to go. I feel a lot more like a human if I don't wear that modern ring of slavery. Not wearing any watch at all is real luxury. Ignoring time is real freedom.

A WATCH IS A JEWL.NOT SLAVERY YOU USE IT,LIKE A BRACLET, ITS NICE, YOU JUST LOOK AT THE WATHC WHEN YOU WANT. STAY LOOKING TO A SAMRTH PHONE AND WASTE YOUR LIFE.

As for The Fifth watches, not convinced. As for the reasons a watch is a must have for men, you nailed it for me. Totally agree!
