I have mixed feelings about this one. I left Orlando thinking Florida was horrible and then moved to San Francisco and regretted it. Turns out the grass was not greener on the other side I still had and have the same freedom to do or be whatever I wanted except I was paying more in taxes for it now. No one was out to get me or cared that I was gay. I then realized it had nothing to do with red or blue but rather the problem lies within the lgbt “community” itself. We want to integrate into society but we can’t even integrate amongst ourselves. You say anything against the status quo and you’re instantly lambasted and disowned. The community is filled with narcissism and entitlement and has mastered the art of hypocrisy. It’s like everyone wants to be victim. Forget logic and facts, you must stay chained to the rhythm. You want Christian’s and others to respect you and treat you kindly when you can’t even do the same to those on the same team as you. There’s no accountability. It’s like talking to children with fingers in their ears.

It's a strange thought to think no gay people live anywhere. A man from Lebanon told me there were absolutely NO Gay people in Lebanon. I laughed.

I love your channel! I'm gay and my husband and I have lived in Dallas for 18 years. Although we are essentially in a Blue bubble in a Red state, we moved here due to the cost of living at the time and how friendly people were. We don't live in the Gayborhood. We live in a primarily straight neighborhood but there are gay couples as well and we are embraced by everyone. We have a great life here. I had a friend who recently visited from Seattle and she was amazed at how much Dallas has to offer. We are actually considering Hendersonville, NC because it is a small town with mountain views and is close to Asheville. Another Blue Bubble in a Red state. It is very gay-friendly.

I'm retired and helping my 95 y.o. dad here in Florida but planning my life afterward. I'm finding that the community is too shallow & cliquish and the presence of a Gayborhood is rapidly becoming less of a factor. Grindr culture is not appealing.

I heard 3 reasons out of 7 that all amounted to "financial factors," but thank you for articulating the aspects of it. I fit in some of the categories you spelled out for why someone stays in a red state. I am a gay 56 year old cis man itching to retire but certainly not able to financially yet, and when I do, given that my professional career has been entirely in Louisiana and Alabama and that my profession is as social worker, not a neurosurgeon, not a corporate lawyer, not a physician, etc., when I AM able to retire, my fixed income will never stand me in good financial stead to move to my original home state of Washington, let alone California or Massechussettes. Your podcast is helpful to remind me I am not " alone in being alone!" Oops, that's a "the Police/Message in a Bottle" lyric. Lol My remaining quibble is more with HRC's municipal equality index than with Queer Money. I still don't think blue cities in red states can legitimately be considered capable of scoring a 100 on the index. Those oppressive state laws and governments mean something real. 80, 85, sure, maybe. But 100 makes no sense to me. Finally, I would like to hear more about some of those locations that DON'T score a perfect 100. 80's and 90's need their day in the sun. 🌞

Oh my gosh, I needed these perspectives years ago. There's so much in that comment about how siblings figure you should naturally be the senior care provider if you didn't have kids. I'm not bitter, but I should have been better prepared financially to handle these responsibilities. My siblings and I all expected that we'd just be living our parents' quality of life as we got older. Now we're entering our 50s and we have their quality of life, but we're overspending to accommodate it (barely in the black each month). No real savings accumulating and no retirement pensions awaiting us in 15 years.

I don't think you have to justify why gay people live in red states My partner and I were born and have lived in them all our long lives. That being said, with Trump running again, we're done burning our votes, so we're heading to a blue state this next year to retire. I watched the episode out of curiosity, because it's not really new to us. Y'all are always worth the watch!

I admit I don't have much backup information. I don't believe the red states except for some cities have good medical care for gays. From Charlotte NC I moved to a rural town. Had 1 dentist for many years. A doctor put on my medical records that I was gay. Now I can't get my teeth cleaned in that office. Through the internet records of many medical practices are shared. If I lived in a big city or a blue state I would think twice about moving to a rural red state even though the financial cost is lower, the overall costs might be higher.
@queermoney

Agreed that things are much more difficult in rural areas and smaller towns/cities. All the cities on this list are medium to large cities, which are blue bubbles if they’re in a red state.

My best friend is an American and analyst for the banks once have moved to red states when they did their cost, they were not thinking of employees. They have to have huge sign-on bonuses plus they do not stay long. They stay 2 to 5 years back to major cities with financial services they’re going to employees and that was one thing they were not expecting my friend who is an analyst warn them. This could happen. It was a prediction, when it has a half $1 billion and trying to find employees and not high employees sign on bonuses hiring agencies trying to train people within the state trying to get the college in the universities start do not last the rest of the world the banks are in the major cities. The US is trying this experiment and at the front end it looked great but it’s not turning out as good as they were expecting.

Giod points. As for "sense of community," I think the phenomenon of Salt Lake City's queer scene. Surprisely powerful for such a conservative state, but likely it is that very conservatism that spurred the drive for queer community to coalesce.

Yes, gay conservative Republican, and yes I live in a red state that many consider the most negative state of Florida. I honor the people who are looking to protect, children, and keep things focused on the average middle-class person. I came from NYC and I am much more comfortable living in Florida. I have never liked extremes of any type and I could never live in a gay ghetto, I enjoy living in a neighborhood where all people are welcome. It has become an issue for every American to be able to afford to have a life and not suffer from insane inflation... Why be forced to live in a blue state if you do not agree with the politics, and are suffering to afford any quality of life.

Great question. I think it would drastically change the global picture. The rest of the US would constantly be deep red and probably all states would lose LGBTQ rights. Many of us would suffer if we’re not financially privileged enough to move to CA or another country. Seems like it would be an incredibly selfish thing to do to so many other Americans. But that’s my opinion 🤷🏻‍♂️

Plus most major cities in Maricopa county and tucson have gay protections. And there is even pride events in Flagstaff, Window Rock (indigenous people) and Payson. When I was raised in Phx, was republican. But changed after the reality fo their hate mongering. And the idea of less taxes is not true anymore. You cost is higher than many states. But to each their own, as long as your happy.

@@jacklong7048 And besides all that, I think this whole focus on just one set of protections is super narrow. When I lived in a blue city, I was more afraid of random drunk people hanging out on my front porch causing trouble than I was of being gay. Not to mention all the store closings in my neighborhood due to theft. Cops not allowed to enforce basic law and order because of local/state policies.
