Used to ride around in the boot of Dads car. It’s just what we did 40 years ago. Pull em out. You will appreciate the space especially when you are oiking a push buggy around.

In the early 2000s when I was a kid, my dad added the 3rd row in his 940 and I think because its original volvoequipment it was no Problem for Swiss Tüv. For us kids it was an awesome time in the trunk and now after I bought my own 940 all the childhoodfriends say: "Wow cool! This is the same model your dad had with the seats in the trunk isnt it?" 😂 In my opinion 3rd row is absolutley worth it.

One of the first things I did on mine was to remove the third row for weight saving, also I removed a crusty tow bar. I did take my youngest once around the block though and she loved it.

They look good as an addition but as you say are kids seats ,loss of space is a factor also .👍

My 940 has those and I can share that no TÜV inspection in the last 25 Years has ever asked or complained about them. In addition: yes we loved them as kids, but I can vouch for several adults that have severely enjoyed riding in the back even for trips of over an hour. This includes a friend of over 2m in size last summer. None of them were older than 35 though 😂 but I guess there is still five seats that have accommodated people up the the age of 90 years very well.

And just to make this clear, my "Zulassungsbescheinigung" also says that the car has 5 seats. Also, my seatbelts visible to anyone looking in the back and I just bolted them so no kid can fiddle with them. As said: no TÜV person ever complained about them. Maybe you are just going to the wrong places to have your inspection...

Have fond memories riding in the extra seats in the 240 wagon my parents had when I was a kid but yeah pretty screwed if you roll over or get rear ended

I had a mk1 vauxhall zafira & the 3rd row always worried me for the kids, then i came one in a scrap yard that had a huge smash up the backside an i mean huge, everything was absolutely crumpled, but where the seat where was completely untouched not even a bent bracket,,,to say i was amazed in an understatement, i was a little happier knowing that the seating area was tough enough to handle a good shunt! I can imagine the volvo would be the same because it's a volvo at the end of the day!

All the Volvo wagons that I've bought with the 3rd row seats get them removed. I want to be able to put a full size spare and keep other spare parts + bits back there!

As cool as the additional seats look I totally agree with you about their disadvantages. I prefer to have some extra storage space under the boot floor for bits and pieces which I think is very cool as well. Looking forward to the headlight wiper video. Working headlight wipers are the icing on the cake for every Volvo.

The 3rd row seats are extremely cool. Too bad the TUV is such a pain. I had a subscriber comment recently about my neighborhood being the loudest in the world. They might be wrong as the bells of doom take the cake. Ill keep my lawncare enthusiasts thank you very much.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained as they say. You are probably right about those seats being not so safe for kids. I'm sure you will find them a good home! On a personal note - my 240 is back on the road!!! I finally "got out in my garage and fixed something" (DoM) and reassembled my head with the new Vx cam, improved valve springs and cleaned and painted the engine. It started immediately after sitting for 11 months! To be honest, I can't say the cam swap improved it though. Still pretty anemic. Anyway, thought you might like to hear another Volvo is on the road!

My kids love the 3rd row in my 940, it's not as practical as my xc90 but it's a great to have just in case the xc90 is out for repairs. I am actually in the market for 3rd row 240 seats if I can get them for a deal.

Interesting. The boot seats I put in my 740 have a wood bottom. Much sturdier. It was great, last new years eve I drove a few mates around, and one of them was sitting on the boot seats... Completely uncomfortable, but they were all so drunk anyways. They were just happy to be tugged around in a Volvo. Regarding seatbelts. I just put two 'waist' seat belts in mine (same as for the rear middle seat) to keep the clean look of the boot.

The 3rd row seats in my '95 Caprice wagon are actually quite comfortable and usable for adults and adult-sized people. Plenty of headroom and knees are a bit bent but not in your chest atleast. Even with the seats folded down, there's still quite a bit of storage room under the trunk floor!

Speaking of modifying the seats in a Volvo, friends of mine were given a new forest green Volvo station wagon by the bride's parents when they married in 1973. Twenty five years later when I visited my friends who had moved from Texas to California they still had the Volvo and they had replaced one of the back seats with the passenger seat from an airplane! I rode in that seat when we went out to a restaurant for dinner. It didn't feel very safe but we all survived and no one was ever injured in that car.

Certainly an inspection isn't gonna be counting seats :) You could buy these owner installable seats from the dealer after you bought the car as an accessory item along with roof rack accesories, interior cargo covers (Wagon/Estate), additional lights, winter grill covers and other add-ons.

In agreement on the rear seats, my 240 had them but they were heavy, took up storage space and no one could safely use them. Removed them and thinking to make some form of chair for the house as a nerdy set piece in future. There are cool though, i have a good memory as a kid getting to sit in the back of one and wave at traffic!

I’ve had all sorts of hassle with epoxy and plastic. Maybe plastic welding would work better for there. Still worth fitting the seats and if the testers can’t hook their peepers on them…. They won’t know. Haha. I would never get in there with my height. Great video dude

Fibreglass would be better for mending that crack but you would need to roughen the plastic surface to make a key for the resin. Here in Croatia it is a similar story with modifications, you don't seem to see modified vehicles around.

My 1992 740 T wagon has those 3d row seats that never get used. Have always thought why have them if I never use them? But then on the other hand, it was a cool feature back in the day and why make an alteration to the original? I am sure that if someone came up to me and asked me for them, I would take them out but so far no one has.... So there they stay!

Ay'up dude, had some in my 1996 960, they looked a bit more comfy than those ones though, the kids loved them, especially on roundabouts! Hope you're all well mate, I think ya headlight wipers might have a leak lol 😅

I have the rear facing seats in my V70 and definitely agree, they are a gimmick. Useful for children maybe, but otherwise probably better to have the extra storage, as cool as they are.

Glad you decided to sell the seats. Not good if rear ended. Also your kids may pull rude faces or hand gestures and get you killed in a road rage! Hopefully our kids would be good!

I've had quite a bit of success sticking Volvo plastics back together using UV-setting glue. Not sure how strong it would be holding a seat base together though.

you would need the seat belts and trim too if you were going to use them. I posted mine to Northern Ireland about 17 years ago and the parcel was so heavy I could barely lift it. Think the postage was 80 quid also!

The guy who sold me my 940 had another one he used for his decorating job. When i collected in he was actually pulling bits off his to put on mine. He asked me if i wanted to swap the extra seats into mine but it's just not worth the effort🤣

Not sure if it's only a TÜV problem, here in the Netherlands the number of seats is also registered in the car papers. Anyway, it's nice to try but I would prefer the extra space and save some weight 😊

Yes definitely! They're the best. But if I had to replace them it would probably be with something big and American from the 1970's 😀

iirc weight limit of 40kg

Weight limit was 36kg (x2). Max height of child 150cm. Available in 4 colours of vinyl for the 965 and V90. -grey, beige oak and black. Only grey beige and black for the other estates! You had to order a mini spare wheel too. (I found my Volvo accessories folder)!
