What a wonderful car. It sounds lovely, considering how long it's been out of use. I think that piston slap is the preserve of the 2-litre Redblock; my B200F-equipped 1990 740 SE with c.250,000 miles on the clock has it in abundance, especially in the depths of winter, but it's never got worse in the 18 years I've owned the car; once it's warmed up, it quietens down and runs like a sewing machine :)
@Involvod
@Involvod 2 жыл бұрын
I was really surprised how quiet the motor was. I love hearing people's piston slap stories, haven't heard one account of it being the death of a motor, makes me feel better about mine, the 940 used to slap when cold, the 240 (Lili) has extreme piston slap, apparently it's been that way for 10 years as well 😃

@@Involvod I was told many years ago by an old Volvo sage that piston slap on B200 Redblocks was something to live with, not something to panic about (I personally find it quite endearing), but I recall the owner of a 740 with such an engine (a B200E, to be exact) who used to post on the VOC forum couldn't stand the sound of the piston slap and eventually sold the car on. A pity, as he'd done a lot of work on the car and it was pretty much spot-on.

Greetings from California! Enjoyed your video. FYI, a power probe tool will make it much easier to diagnose electrical problems. Much easier than dragging a battery around to test your pump. Also, an impact driver makes removing the bolt on the fuel filter much less frustrating! I learned the hard way. 😅

Well done, engine sounds great. New HT and spark plugs will probably make a world of difference. Don't forget to make a note that the fuel pump needs securing. I once rebuilt a car and put the prop shaft bolts in hand tight intending to do up later! 2 months later it was all back together but within first 20 miles prop shaft disconnected!!!! Luckily I was in traffic jam so no damage done but fair bit of embarrassment! Moral to story, either make obvious note on dash or do something so you can't forget. Great start to getting it back on road.

Glad to see she started! Based on my experience, the condition inside the fuel tank will be dreadful, needing new sender, pump and maybe a complete tank. My 38K mile 240 did. They'll run without the in-tank pump but not very good, as you probably already know. Looking forward to more on this one!
@Involvod

@mayflowerlash11
@mayflowerlash11 2 жыл бұрын
The tank on the 740 is plastic I think, so it won't rust. But the pump in the tank is prone to wearing out and the filter on the inlet to the pump wears through and this negatively affects the starting and running of the engine.
@gloriushumbug5832
@gloriushumbug5832 2 жыл бұрын
@@Involvod You can start and drive the car with only one of the pumps but if it sits for a long time you need the forward pump in order to get it started, during normal driving the in tank pump is enough. Basically in tank pump is for when you are driving and under seat pump is for starting
@Involvod
@Involvod 2 жыл бұрын
Wow that is surprising! Very useful to know, thanks! 😃
@mortimergladbreath
@mortimergladbreath 2 жыл бұрын
@@Involvod The in tank pump was added by Volvo to help lift the fuel from the tank. The under seat pump is the high pressure pump required by the injectors. The car will run poorly on just the under seat pump, but not at all on just the in tank pump. I know this from first-hand experience.

Man you saved me a lot of time with this video! My Volvo 940 GL was not starting but cranking OK, spraying fuel in the air intake and the car started but fuel pump was not doing anything. Fuses and fuel relay were OK too. Took the fuel pump out and gave it 12v and it worked, this got me puzzled. Measured the voltage when cranking and saw 10.5v at the pump terminals, so I started going a rabbit hole thinking there may have some wiring issue, luckily I saw this video specially at kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6apXpiugrN8bqc where you had more or less the same voltage and in the end the car started with a new pump, got a new pump and now the car starts without issues.
