As a former hotelier, I would recommend that if anyone has any particular cleanliness requests, you can always call the hotel ahead of check-in to make that request. We once had a recurring guest that we knew was huge about cleanliness so I made sure his carpet was shampooed the day before and I had a new shower curtain installed in his blocked room. Hotel cleaning staff DO work hard for you. If you had a cleanliness issue in your room, it’s likely that’s a top down issue. Leave a tip on the nightstand with a note if you can!

I worked my way through college as a cleaning professional and we did it the same way she described. One important tip about pretreating is to be sure to not let liquid cleaners dry. If they dry it can make the dirt even harder to remove.

I would add: I prioritize bathrooms and kitchens because of germs, so I do those rooms first unless client specifies something else is more important. I always tried to get the main things done and then get an "extra" done each time (something like the windowsills or the baseboards, etc.). I dust before cleaning floors since gravity will make some dust fall on the floor. With bathrooms I start with mirrors and end with toilets (cleanest to dirtiest). It makes the towel last longer.

I know it’s sounds crazy but I know that most housekeeping staff work really hard. Before we leave the hotel we are staying at I always 1- Pick up all the trash in all the trash cans and put it all in one. 2-I take all the towels & washcloths we used and drop them in the bathtub.3- I wipe everything down before we leave. I’m definitely OCD about it but I know every little bit helps. I just try to respect the area in which I stayed. If our housekeepers are good and have cleaned our room well I always leave them a tip.

Beverly Rembold, My husband of 60 years passed away 5 years ago ! I was in a depressed state also my house and yard has been so let go I am truly ashamed for anyone to visit me! To make matters worse ,I have become a hoarder and addicted to buying “stuff” from the Goodwill ! I feel I am living in a storage unit ! The odd thing about this phenomenon is as I was just letting things go and buying “stuff” I didn’t need I knew in “back of my mind “ that I was out of control but felt joy when I was doing this crazy thing ! It’s been 5 years since my husband pass-away . I am happy to say I am beginning to get a grip on my self and have been cleaning and getting rid of “stuff” ! I haven’t been 100% on staying with this cleaning and purging but I am making progress ! Clean my space has helped me also ! For the most part to wake up out of my grief and see how I was sinking lower into that black abyss ! I know your pain of loss of one who is the most precious one our mothers, yes there are others who are as dear to us ,but mothers and children leave a space in our heart and soul that is always empty ! Blessed Be , and may the light of a mothers love fill your life with warmth and peace !👍💕🌹🦋🌈👵🏻🐶😺

Betty Houk thank you so much for sharing your story with me and everyone. That’s exactly how I’ve allowed my home to get. Just packed with things that I really don’t need but I also have some of my mothers beautiful furniture I really want to incorporate into my home & her mother’s furniture so I’ve got to get myself out of this deep funk like you said you feel like you’re in an abyss! But this lady does help me & does give me inspiration and everyone’s precious words and time. Thank you Mrs Houk. I am sorry for your loss, I can hardly imagine how hard it is to lose a spouse after so many years of being together. Yes it’s very hard to lose your mother especially so unexpected & my heart is very heavy & sad and my house shows that. I’m trying to get it back together like normal folks, if there’s such a thing as “normal”. I used to keep my house perfectly clean used to wash every dish after dinner before even sitting down, now my husband and my 8yo are lucky to get a pb&j or some hamburgers helper around here but thankfully my husband has been fairly understanding, as understanding as one can be when they’re not hurting like we are. Ty again and again for your msg and sweet words ❤️🙏🏼

What strength of peroxide do you use? Just 3%? And what is it good to use to clean? The only cleaning experience I have is using extra strong peroxide to clean my used reptile rack. There are things reptiles can catch from other reptiles. So I had to use something strong to make sure it was safe.

Allocate 1 room to throw all your junk into and throw ALL the stuff of the house into that 1 room for now ! Secondly empty all your drawers upside down on a newspaper or something and only put back what you need. Thirdly use labels on each draw so there's a proper place for everything including your cleaning products in the laundry. When you have a place for everything, you find everything quickly and it stops you buying double spray and wipe etc.

Look into the "konmari" method of decluttering, once decluttered begin clean. A good quality vaccum with multiple attachments (and crevice attachments) makes a huge help. Start with the main bedroom and go one room at a time. Go at your own pace do not try and tackle everything all at once. Oh and also a home use upholstery cleaner and steam cleaner can help tons as well. (Amazon often has the best deals)

The last room I stayed in had dirt around the doors...and what turned out to be paint spots on the back of the toilet. They were kinda brownish red and I was worried it was blood. I got cleaning wipes from my family member who lived nearby. I probably should have asked someone who worked there to clean it for me. But I was too shy for that. I felt gross staying in that room but it was a small town and there wasn't too many choices on where to stay!

We are in the process of preparing my father in law's house for sale. He had let it get a little past it's prime and when he still went there over the last few years, even though he was living with us, it just never got cleaned. We had just removed all of the kitchen cabinet doors to clean and repaint and I was not looking forward to cleaning the grease off of the cabinets, but that video popped up and told me to use an enzyme cleaner - it worked. I then had to tackle a stove that was coated with cooking splatter, so I did a search of your videos and found some suggestions - it took some time and a bit of elbow grease, but it worked. We now need to clean all of the walls to prep for repair and paint, so I'm about to dive in looking for some more help. I always seem to be able to find what I need BEFORE I make a misstep, or an unnecessary investment. Thanks!

Dunning-Kruger as a cleaner, my biggest pet peeve is when people leave their kitchen counter covered in tons of crap or leave a sink full of dishes that I have to work around (my service doesn’t include doing the dishes) AND when someone’s bedroom floor is covered in clothes that I have to pick up before I vacuum. I always miss something and suck up a sock 😅

My daughter use to clean hotel rooms in New Mexico in an elite [expensive] hotel and she reports that housekeeping often just wipes the glasses down with the same cloth they do everything else with. This is instead of changing to a new, clean glass. Of course my daughter did not do this; :). A lot of hotels use plastic cups now but with the efforts to reduce plastic, I can see glass coming back into vogue in hotels. I for one, would like to know I have a glass that went through the dishwasher.

This past winter we went to universal studios and stayed at a budget friendly newer hotel. They use white duvet covers as the bedspreads. I love this much better than the funky colored bedspreads that rarely get washed. I always check bedding for wrinkle spots, hair, etc before crawling into bed. Sometimes I bring my own pillowcases from home. I bring disinfectant wipes for doorknobs, buttons and surfaces, a ziploc bag for over the remote. I never use the glasses or coffeemaker. I've heard too many horror stories over the years!

Hey Melissa and team! Thanks again for a great video! About the hotel questions: 1) How often do hotels REALLY wash the linens and flip the mattresses? 2) Do hotels use disInfectant products in the daily bathroom cleaning? I personally always carry a small bottle of disinfectant in my bag in order to clean the toilet seat and every handle in the room, especially because I usually travel with kids. Other than that, I have some more.. personal cleaning issues: 1) How do you clean bamboo/wicker things, like the sushi mat-roller, lawn chairs and bags? I am afraid to use water more than I do (wet cloths), but with sticky rice, spilled drinks and tons of dust and mud respectively they are truly a cleaning nightmare for me. 2) Speaking of professional cleaning, is there a way to clean built up on laminated floors in depth? Our office floor is constantly dirty, even though in first appearance doesn't look so! There is a daily cleaning service who mops the floors, but whenever something needs to be cleaned up off the floor (i.e. spilled water/ coffee etc) the used napkins end up being really filthy! I even tried cleaning a part of my desk floor, soaking it in hot water and soap and scrubbing with a sponge one day, just to check if there could be done, and even then, there wasn't much improvement! It is quite annoying actually! Is there a cleaning product (brush, soap etc) or technique that can improve this? (mind you, the personnel the cleaning company employs is limited and overworked...I am dusting my desk and cupboards weekly, due to it...The lady that cleans our offices is amazing but has a lot to do, so I try to help doing my part....) Thank you for your time reading this, and of course for your amazing videos and work!

Oh man, hotel rooms always set off my ick factor. After having kids (who touch everything!) I started bringing Lysol wipes with me and doing a quick wipe down in the hotel room when we arrived. Usually the light switches, remotes, surfaces, sink faucet handles, and toilet seat. Only takes me a minute, but makes me feel much better. Oh, and I always remove the comforter from the end of the bed and set it aside. That thing is nasty. 😩😂 Last hotel tip, keep your suitcase off the floor on a luggage rack or hard surface like the dresser or desk if possible to decrease chances of bringing home bed bugs. 👍 Hotel horror story-went into the room and found a women’s bra hanging from the door handle. 🤮

I had the same experience with the black curly hairs in the bed and on the bathroom floor, we asked for a different room, just couldn't do it. I've always wondered how often the blankets and curtains get washed but especially blankets and if the shower and bathroom floor get washed after every stay. Also things like doorknobs and shampooing carpets.

Very useful video. Thanks! I'd like to see several hotel videos. One on how a room is typically cleaned. Another on simple precautions we can take in a hotel (don't ever use drinking glasses, put remotes in a baggie, etc) for every stay. A third on how to check for bedbugs and key precautions we should take before unpacking anything. If you're really game, I'd also love to see a video on steps we can take when staying in a hostel (shared bedroom and bath) to avoid germs. Happy travels!

Cleaning house is great therapy for processing sadness, and many other feelings. When feeling sad becomes too much, try to distract yourself if possible with a good book on tape, and try to get lost in someone else's story and keep on cleaning. It helped me a .. a little bit.

The best tip that I have ever gotten from yur channel is having cleaning toothbrush 👍 I have very expensive wreaths that I clean gently with the cleaning toothbrush, like just removing dust with warm soapy water … but then I also clean other small detailed areas with the toothbrush. It’s just handy 👍👍💡💡

Hotel story: I was night audit and we had a room where a guest was staying with their dog. Though they requested a spot near the door to let Fido out regularly, it became clear a few days in, Fido was not being let out. The guest was evicted, and the room was trashed. Not even housekeeping would take care of it. I bundled up, and got to work. I bagged all the trash (3 bags), stripped all linens, and took a broom and dustpan in to tackle the... 💩. Four hours of overnight work later, the room was ready for ozone and a looooong treatment of odors, but housekeeping didn’t have to do the nasty dirty.

I really enjoy your videos! Regarding hotels: when we stay multiple consecutive nights in a hotel, we usually hang a “do not disturb” tag on the doorknob for the entire stay. Does that help the cleaning staff, so they have one less room to clean for a few days, or does it make their jobs more difficult when they have a dirtier-than-usual room to power through at the end of our stay? Also, I always wonder if cleaning staff is treated well and paid a living wage. I am more likely to stay in a hotel where I know employees are valued.

I’ve never had a hotel horror story until two weeks ago. Dishwasher was full of MOULD. Non-smoking room smelt of smoke. What would have been amazing floor to ceiling windows were covered in smudges and fingerprints. Asked for a new room, only to into find a used breastpad on the floor. Needless to say we grabbed our suitcases and walked five blocks at 10pm to a different hotel.

pre-treating you've talked about, i kind of do the same thing. i work cleaning at a farm house and one thing i do is i do is a pre-clean. i remove things from the island and put on the Peninsula. and i also pick up items on the peninsula on the kitchen table til after i am finished cleaning that space. i rinse the dishes and get ready for washing and rinse the food out of the sink. and then i start cleaning, i wash the dishes. i then clean the stove top & counter top (the island) and then put everything that goes there goes back. i also do that too when i am working, clean first where it is a priority and then just touch up in areas where it is not a priority. and i am a very fast worker, i can get a lot done in a short amount of time. i can go from the kitchen to the sun room to the living room in one day. and i always make sure i sweep the garage floor and steps before starting the actual clean, that is the fastest way dirt gets into the house and your just making more work for yourself.

Thank you for your videos they are very helpful and informative :))) would love to see a video on area rug cleaning (without having to take to a car wash as ours is quite big) .... we have a young puppy and he has left a couple of unpleasant odors on our rug recently ...we normally scrub and then use baking soda for the Odor and then vacuum up after a couple hours which works fairly well but wondered if there were any other tips or tricks for this :))) thank you very much.

Don't doubt that the hotel you visited knew who you were (Clean My Space) and that you were coming, but either way-- I would love to see Clean My Space do a video mocking/ doing what hotels do to clean. Hotels (in general) sure do a job. The kind of work that makes you want to be at a hotel. :)

For the most part I use a 2 wave system (as I don’t usually clean my place I clean buildings and do move out cleans) so it’s mostly the wiping portion then floors. Our standards for the 6 buildings and clean suites in and the 4 I do halls for are extremely high so I have to stay on my toes and make sure I do the best job I can to keep said job. That’s the reason I adopted the 3 wave system and made it 2 for my needs.

When I was in college, I worked at the front desk for a hotel and sometimes, on really busy days, we would do a first wave ahead of housekeeping to make their jobs go a little faster so we could get rooms turned over quickly. Our job was just to clear out trash and strip beds, and let me tell you, I lost faith in humanity a little bit every time I saw a room that had been totally trashed. It was may more common than you might expect. I can't speak for a full-time hotel housekeeper, but I think they likely appreciate someone who simply puts away their own trash and piles their own towels more than you can imagine. Ever since then, I try to leave my hotel room in a reasonably clean state.

Mara Geula My mother worked for a really popular, high end chain of hotels, beginning as a housekeeper and ultimately as a general manager of two different chains. As a housekeeper, she told me it was common practice to take the toilet bowl brush (from room to room) and use it not only to clean the toilet, but to scrub the tubs, as well! I told her that was gross. It is how she was taught to save time instead of having to use a different cleaning tool for the tub, plus, she said the brush goes into a bleach solution. Also, the drinking glasses, in the bathroom are never taken and washed. Instead, the are sprayed with glass cleaner, wiped and put back. You would be better off using the wrapped disposable cups from the ice bucket tray. Speaking of the ice bucket, it is never sanitized, just rinsed if vomit is in it (yes!), So wash it yourself, then use the liner. Finally, the sheets and bedding, my mother was taught to use the "sight" test. Meaning, if there is no obvious stain, just remake the bed, even with different patrons! My mother said she drew the line there. Now, it was different for a person staying for several days, the bedding wasn't changed without stains unless requested. So... Gross

My hotel horror was working in housekeping and seeing the wild things clients would do that we had to clean! One could have been someone else's horror but the room audit caught it. I had cleaned a room and noticed a few spots of blood - tiny ones - on the wall. After using peroxide to clean them and not wonder too much about how they got there, I checked the carpet again and the other walls. A half-hour later, my supervisor who had audited my room came to get me and we cleaned The Ceiling that had a Giant Line of Blood across it! They use headlamps during a room audit to make sure we have cleaned well and it was easier to see in bright light but boy, did I feel terrible for not looking up. From then on, I'd check the ceiling just in case some lunacy had gone on in the room the night before. What lunacy? I'll never know and never want to!

Yes, please do a video about hotels. I am one that when I go to a hotel, I do not let my family touch anything until I give everything a good disinfecting wipes. I also clean up as much as possible before we leave so that the maid does not have to do as much. My husband says I am crazy, but I can’t help it. Hi melissa, I heard you over and over about your company. I dont think I have seen a video about a client's cleaning but that I would like to see. Your house is beautifully clean but I would like to see the mess of others and how you approach it. I am a person who is disorganized not dirty but I love to learn with your videos how to be more productive cleaner. I like to have things clean but sometimes I dont know how to clean some items and I get stuck and give up. Question .. when you go clean a client's house are they mostly mild surfaces cleaning or have you had nightmare cleaning moments.
