As someone with a background in physical sciences I have to challenge the assertion that the sine wave technique increases power in punches. The formula for 1/2MV^2 is a actually a vector formula and applying it to the sine wave technique completely ignores the mechanics of a the vector. Yes adding up and down movement while standing on a scale will cause the scale to show higher weight, which is essential a force cause by the sum of gravity effect on the mass of the person and the downward force as you settle into a riding stance, however, this is only in the y vector (if you make the floor the x vector) and wouldn't be additive to any force in the x vector. A good analogy would be imagine a rocket on a launch pad that can develope 1000kg of thrust from an engine at the bottom of the rocket, aimed directly at the ground. If you add a second rocket, at a 90 degree angle to the main rocket, that also generates 1000kg of thrust, and then ignited both engines at the same time...rocket would only have 1000kg of thrust to lift it off the pad because the second engine would only be giving thrust perpendicular to the main engine and therefore it wouldn't be additive. Similarly, adding downward force to a punch adds nothing to the force of the punch if the punch is perpendicular to the downward force such as a reverse punch with a downward sine wave.

For Kinetic Energy which we use to exert force on an object. What elements would you recommend to increase punching power if not forward motion, reactionary force and rotation?
@airkrd
@airkrd 7 жыл бұрын
First you have to define punching power. I assume you mean delivering a punch that causes the most amount of damage to the intended target; which isn't as straightforward as just increasing the kinetic energy. The best way is to increase kinetic energy is to increase velocity...this is why high velocity, supersonic, small arms are so lethal but frequently have rounds with much less mass than subsonic weapons. The velocity in the kinetic energy equation is squared so has a much greater effect. You can also increase mass, but this is much harder in punching...unless you hold a roll of quarters in your hand. However, there are a few ways to increase mass with techniques such as using your hips and legs as you punch. As far as the efficacy of a punch, along with kinetic energy, there are many other factors that dictate how much damage is done; impulse, distribution and elasticity of the collision can all affect the how much damage can be delivered in a punch. Impulse has a huge effect on kinetic energy delivered into an object. Impulse is essentially the change in force over time (resulting change in velocity effects the force F=MA). Think of a human in terminal velocity free fall at 122mph. If there is a change of velocity from 122mph to 0 in 4 seconds, little to no damage will be done. Different story if instead the velocity is changed from 122 to 0 almost instantaneously because of hitting solid concrete. The same is true for a punch, completely committing to the punch and not pulling back will cause the punch to change velocity in a much shorter amount of time and therefore delivering a more damaging blow. Elasticity can affect damage in a collision. Squishy, soft objects, tend to have inelastic collisions. Essentially, the two objects collide and then travel together. The moving object transfers less of its energy into the target and therefore, less damage. In elastic collisions, most of the energy of the moving object is transferred into the target. In a punch, a tight closed fist striking a hard target such as bone is going to do much more damage than a loose fist into flab. Lastly, distribution of force. Throwing 1kg of cotton candy at 80mph at someone will effectively deliver the same amount of kinetic energy as throwing a 1kg lead weight 80 mphs; but I'd choose the cotton candy every time. Ignoring the squishiness of the cotton candy, it delivers its energy over a much larger area vs the lead weight delivers the same kinetic energy over a much smaller area. To put this all together, in my opinion as a scientist and a martial artists, the best way to increase punching "power" is to make the punch as fast as you can, recruit your leg, abdominal and shoulder muscles to help generate speed. Rotating hips and core will also generate speed as well as adding to the mass. Stepping forward if you can to add mass. Small, tight fist, keeping your speed constant and not pulling back last minute and making sure your punch stays on a straight line, perpendicular to the target, as much as possible to avoid losing energy to a different vector. Adding up and down movement isn't going to add anything to the kinetic energy delivered and may actually decrease power because energy is wasted into a different vector. I started my training years ago in ITF and switched to WTF in the early 90s. The reason, I feel, the sine wave is so popular is because it feels powerful and looks impressive. Truely the best way to put this to the test is to design a randomized double blinded study however, I cannot think of any way to control for all the variables or properly blind the subjects and observers. Sorry so long, I'm just a science nerd who also loves Tae Kwon Do.
@airkrd
@airkrd 7 жыл бұрын
...and not to beat a dead horse but; don't mistake my challenge for believing the technique is ineffective. In reality, a reverse punch in horseback riding, with all other variables the same, a sine wave punch will probably deliver the same power as a non-sine wave punch. And let's be honest, in poomse and kicho is where this matters...in a real world situation, all bets are off.

Scientifically correct, but practically - not correct. By lowering the center of gravity abruptly downwards, you create a bouncing wave upwards through your body, and the end of this wave creates the wipping motion on your limb, being a foot or a hand. So yes, this generates more power. Any martial artist that is good enough knows this and can feel it in his punches and kicks. and no, it isn't an illusion.

The reactionary force increases your overall mass which if directed in the moment it comes into existence can be launched forward or in any direction.
@OgeXam
@OgeXam 6 жыл бұрын
Mass is not change by your motion. Save when you start to approach the speed of light. Bouncing up and down on the scale you are not measuring mass or weight, you are seeing the results of forces generated by moving your mass up and down. Giving time to accelerate downward due to gravity you will gain momentum. Then the scale resists this momentum and then LOTS of physics comes into play. Then you are seeing the effects of Work applied in a downward force. Which then is slowed due to deceleration due to the scales springs decelerating the velocity of the person until the velocity is back to 0 and no momentum of the person in a downward direction. At that point you only have the acceleration due to gravity pulling the person down at a constant rate and the constant mass of the person. That force we call "weight"To really understand you need to look into Newtonian Physics and understand the relations between mass, velocity, normal force, acceleration, etc.

Sorry basic physics breaks sine wave theory. You are suggesting a downward force increases a horizontal force.The amount of energy from one vector of movement applied to another vector of movement is added to the 2nd vector that first is multiplied by the cosine of the angle between the vectors. Downward movement and a punch are at a 90 degree angle. The cosine of 90 is 0 so none of the downward force translates into the horizontal punch.If the downward force is described with the letter D and the Punch a P the math would look likeP + D*cosine(90) = P + 0 = PNo matter how large your D you get nothing added to P.
@SimonScher
@SimonScher 6 жыл бұрын
The sine wave is not suggesting that the downward motion pushes your body weight into the technique. The hip rotation does that. The simultaneous rotation and drop creates a tension or pressure between the body and the ground. That pressure momentarily increases the overall effect or representation of your mass. It is like punching before your foot hits the ground vs at the moment it hits in a stepping punch. The dropping of the weight has a tangible effect.
@BlueFang714
@BlueFang714 5 жыл бұрын
If you are relaxed your strikes will always go up or down since any shift in the body will be round in some way causing us to rise or fall. When you drop the strike should follow the line of the drop rather than continuing parallel to the ground.

MMA Age is just a number. I would suggest warming up more and stretching more before attempting higher kicks and developing the muscles to hold and use them as I show in my tutorials but there is no reason why somebody who is 89 should not be able to do high kicks if they have stretched and conditioned themselves for it.

You don`t see "Sine wave " used by boxers , because it is slow . Even ITF fighters , who are just about the only people who buy into it , don`t use it in sparring . Boxers who punch slowly do not feature very highly in the list of all time greats. If someone retracts their arm and relaxes their stance before punching me in a boxing ring I will see it and beat them to the punch . It might help you break a board , but so what ? Simon , can you direct me to a video where someone is using this technique in the ring effectively . I am trying not to offer you any disrespect , but I really hate what General Choi did to TKD by promoting this method .
@SimonScher
@SimonScher 8 жыл бұрын
+ilikezappa We slow it down to practice, but it is the natural way the body moves. In patterns it is exaggerated so that we can study the elements of it, but in application it is small and fast and blends well into our body mechanics, so the untrained eye might have trouble noticing it. But you do see boxers use all of the elements of sine wave. They move down and up and down, they strike on the landing, they relax until the moment of impact, They press into the ground when they strike, they shift forward on strikes, all of that stuff. Sine Wave is just a way of codifying the things the body does naturally so that we can adapt our techniques (which the body does not usually do) to the natural flow of our movements. I know you don't like the Sine Wave from your heated expositions in other threads. You absolutely don't have to like it, or do it or even respect it. But having trained in it extensively and given it much suspicious thought and trial I have found it a very effective method of power development as broken down in this tutorial. But this is my two cents.
@ilikezappa
@ilikezappa 8 жыл бұрын
+Simon Scher Appreciate your two cents Simon , and apologise if my "heated expositions" have annoyed you ! I must stop having beer for breakfast . I am a half reasonable boxer , but don`t move up and down on jab /cross punches. I do relax until the point of impact , but I think most styles will teach that . It isn`t exclusive to ITF . Actually don`t punch full power very often . You couldn`t last 12 rounds if you did . The up and down movement in boxing is more evasion , feint . Speed is what you need . Watch some lightweight Mexicans . Whatever . I would sell my Aunt Mildred to be able to do TKD like you . Happy Xmas . PS She is fifty bucks , if you are interested.
@ilikezappa
@ilikezappa 8 жыл бұрын
+Simon Scher Ps , I think there is a problem with your interpretation of the physics here too . At 2.40 , when you are in sitting stance and dropping your weight at 90 degrees to the direction of the punch , how does this reaction force increase the momentum of the punch ? You would have to be punching in the same direction as your body was moving to make the punch harder ?????? Rotation of the body into the punch is what gives punches power, not moving at 90 degrees to it .
@SimonScher
@SimonScher 8 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what your question here is. at 2:40 i am talking about leverage and hip rotation. before that I am talking about reactionary force. how dropping your weight straight down at the moment of impact increases the EFFECT of you mass not your literal mass, only how it is expressed. Sort of the way gravity is simulated in a rotating space station. In this section I am talking about Mass and weight not momentum. There are two elements of power Mass and Velocity. Mass is what I am discussing in reactionary force. I talk later in the video about forward momentum, and shifting weight forward. I have the clip of the tai chi guy pushing a bunch of people to illustrate that point.
@KaptainCanuck
@KaptainCanuck 8 жыл бұрын
+ilikezappa Note that you cannot drop weight. Weight is the force you exact against the ground due to gravity. You may drop your mass but weight is force so cannot be "dropped".

Unfortunately, the problem with Sine Wave is that it might be fine if you're sparring with other ITF guys, but come and have a go with WFT. Why are you so worried about power? You are not doubling your power with sine wave, but you are increasing the amount of forewarning your opponent has that you're about to do something. I remember some years ago a local ITF club came to train with us (WFT club). When sparring (using ITF rules so no one would get hurt), they didn't have a chance.

I've heard criticism of chambering from boxers and MMA t ypes, saying it would delay your move and make it more easy to be countered. That is, the time it takes to chamber would more than offset any increased speed in terms of giving your opponent more time (and body cues) to counter it. Granted, it adds power, but if it comes too late? Overall, you think it is worth the trade off?
@SimonScher
@SimonScher 9 жыл бұрын
As I say later in the tutorial at about 8:30 or so we practice the gross (fully chambered and extended) techniques to teach our bodies how to move and how to incorporate all of the power elements. Then when they are secure in our muscle memory we can make the moves smaller and finer for application.

I remember an experiment performed at Newcastle University (UK) quite a few years ago. A weight (let's say 1 lb) was loaded onto a hydraulic ram and the ram was set to travel a specific distance (let's say 1 foot) at a set speed (let's say 1 mile per hour). So 1 lb x 1 ft x 1 mph. The result was expected (i can't remember the exact result but let's say it was 2 lb impact force. Then the ram was loaded with 2 lb, all the other criteria remained the same. The result was an impact of 4 pounds of force. Then they reduced the weight back down to 1 pound and increased the speed of the ram up to (let's say 2 miles per hour). The result this time was much higher (again i can't remember exactly how much it was but the result was somewhere in the region of 8 pounds of impact force. Speed is the key. If you THROW a bullet at someone it will do hardly any harm at all. Speed.

If you jump and land flat footed you know how you feel your entire body jarred for a second? Well when you do that your entire body is affected by the impact with the ground. If you drop down and push against the floor a moment of competing/counter acting pressure build up between your body and the floor pushing back at you. While your body is under this pressure is is as if gravity is acting on you more strongly and the expression of Mass on Earth (weight) is increased. If a heavier object moving at speed can strike harder than a light object moving at speed then it stands to reason that if you trike quickly while your body is heavier you will hit harder than when you are your normal weight. Does that make sense to you?

You need to revise some of the inaccurate info presented. The first is the force/power formulae is accleration x distance or mass = power. formulas.tutorvista.com/physics/force-formula.html The second is that weight is a force against the ground while mass is the amount of material that constitutes an object. They are NOT interchangeable just as engine and motor are not even though many argue they are. If you provide knowledge of something, credibility is earned, partly, through correct use of terminology.
@SimonScher
@SimonScher 8 жыл бұрын
You make a few good points. However when we are talking power in martial arts. it is more closely related to Kinetic Energy in pure physics. so the formula would be en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinetic_energy. And yes it is better to use terms correctly. but correctness of terms is often dictated by their context. And in martial arts what we call power is kinetic energy. so we can call that power if we use the formula in that context. And when talking about mass it is important to take into account how it is measured and applied. on earth the effect of mass is weight and that is what the formula concerns in this context. So for this purpose they would be interchangeable. a heavey object traveling at speed hits harder than a light object traveling slowly.

A helpful video overall, thanks. I'm glad you're skeptical about an energy force in Tai Chi-- there is absolutely no good evidence for such a thing. Regarding the Tai Chi push, I think it is also extremely likely that the followers (who are lined up and being pushed) are complicit, either intentionally or unintentionally, in behaving in a way to allow the master to push them. Belief in Chi with its accompanying strong 'placebo effect,' and an absolutely obedient relationship to authority influence their behavior. A test of this would be allowing 20 bikers (hey why not) with no relationship to the master and no expectation ahead of time being allowed to push against him. I predict a very different result. As in this type of B.S.: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXanknZ_edudbKs

LOL 'Look though a microscope and see an atom', that is about as good as your screwing your punches for more power.

Royaleah i think the microscope thing was meant to be apochrophal. And the 'screwing of the punches' is something every taekwon-do student learns, it gets less exaggerated with time and quite a few students forget the screwing of the punch entirely in their later years (there's room for everybody on this bus). But the theory is sound, it adds a little power and some surface disruption force (ripping) upon impact. Quite a lot a arts incorporate this technique and if you think about it even boxing does a less exaggerated version of this - the fist only turning a half a turn as it speeds to it's target. Try this - Stand in a boxing stance, hold your hands in a defensive stance (ready to punch) and make sure your palms are facing the floor - totally facing the floor, then punch without turning your hands at all and do it a few times. How awkward is that? Hmmm?

GENISIS 25:23-25" and the lord said unto her, two nations(2 different kinds of nationalities) and two manner of people (meaning this two nations will be nothing alike aka polar opposite, night and day, or...black and white) shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other"(blacks are natually stronger that whites) GENISIS 25:25 "AND THE FIRST CAME OUT RED, (our so called white nation) ALL OVER LIKE A HAIRY GARMENT; (challenge a white friend not to shave any body hair for 1 month or 2) AND THEY CALLED HIS NAME ESAU" Esau makes something so simple seem so difficult because he has to know every move detail to the T for lack of what they call "soul" or the natural learning tool. We (Jacob) can see it and do it. Esau has to see it, follow it, study it, take notes, find a culture willing to teach & have the patients to teach him then eventually the moves start to make sense lol. Shortly after he has stolen all things good, he will murder them and there families come back to babylon and make a KZbin channel teaching how to fight😂 "For esau have i hated but yet Jacob have i loved!" long live the black messiah our christ and savior! Judgment day is coming! Israel stand up!
