In a previous video, we covered some of the craziest records in NBA history. These included scoring feats, both good and bad, some outrageous season and career records, and some just downright embarrassing records. In this video, we’re going to cover some records and facts that are beyond crazy - they’re strange, unexpected, and sometimes completely unexplainable.

All sports fans should know that just because the name is Most Valuable Player that it doesn't always go to the most valuable but the player with the best performance for that season

Fans know exactly what "MVP" means. The problem is that reasonable people often disagree on the definition. What makes NBA MVP interesting is that you share a basketball, and coaches rest players. So the best player (LeBron) might not always have the best season (Westbrook this year, Curry last year). And there are other legitimate questions to ask, like is it more valuable to be the lone superstar on a weak team, or a guy on a pretty solid team that transforms the team into a transcendent one?

Bill Russell won the 1962 MVP. During that time players voted for the MVP and Bill was well liked and considered to be a better player. The argument was, while Wilt numbers were outer of this world, it also felt as if he cared more about the numbers then winning. Oscar on the other hand was said to be a hard teammate and not very well liked. And as a 6'5 guy in a 6'2/6'3 league (other then centers like Bill who were 6'9) getting a triple double while crazy wasn't too hard and he's team didn't seem like a real threat to the Celtics (so I've read) . So yes I agree there numbers were crazy and would of gotten a MVP in today's league but at that time Russell was considering more valuable and more well liked.

Tony Brown Guards weren't 6,2 they were 6'4 and meassured without shoes on compared to nowadays. The average size in the NBA almost never changed. Also Russel played with 5 HOF players. They simply did not give Wilt or Oscar the MVP solely on disliking them, which is crazy.

Bill Russell won the MVP because while Wilts numbers were insane, no one liked him that much and people thought that he just cared to much about putting up points (which he disproved when he had the most assists in the NBA that one year) and Oscar Robertson didn't win the MVP because his team SUCKED! There were 10 teams in a conference and 8 of them made the playoffs, and his team couldn't make the playoffs, so they thought he wasn't very valuable and plus, putting up a triple double was easier and more common back then

zach Horvitz The reason players recorded a triple double more often is because of the insane speed they played at. The fastbreak game was the standard of every team in the league. This does not neccesarily mean that what they were doing was overrated since it was far more intense than nowadays with great players all playing at leaat 40 mins a game.

"The hack-a-player strategy wasn't all that common in 1997". Actually, it was called hack-a-Shaq and it was first implemented by Phil Jackson and the Bulls in the early 90's. Especially in 1995 when the Bulls had 3 Centers that would just foul the crap out of Shaq all game. So by 1997, it was pretty common.

Fact 1: It's not weird. You forget that back then, players voted for the award as well. They simply valued Russell's ability to generate wins and make his team better than Wilt's 50 points and Oscar's stat-stuffing. A lot of the players of the 60s have defended their decision, citing how they admired how Russell did everything that didn't appear on the box score while Wilt did everything possible to show off that he did--and most of the time at the cost of wins. Hell, Jerry West and Hal Greer said that while they thought Wilt pound for pound was the greatest individual player of all time, he simply didn't contribute to the bigger picture as Russell did. There's a VERY related quote by Jerry West getting annoyed at Wilt for bragging about the box score during his time with the Lakers as if he was "trying to validate himself to the people that didn't know an inch of the game" and how Wilt was happy to lose as long as he shone above the others doing it. Hell, Jerry West even said that the way Wilt played the game stifled his teammates' abilities to get into their own rhythm--and he only found success later in his career by FINALLY learning how to defer. I mean, look at the sheer number of attempts a game he took. Even for the 60s, it was insane.

It's not unexplainable. Bill Russell may have averaged over 10 blocks a game that year but they didn't keep track of defensive stats. And he also won more games. MVP wasn't an offensive-stat award back then it was about who brought wins and overall dominance
