The Minecraft Survival Guide Season 2 continues. Time to hit ludicrous speed!
This tutorial will show you how to create a Blue Ice or Packed Ice tunnel in the Nether, allowing for super fast travel between locations thousands of blocks apart. We set up two ice roads - to the ice plains and frozen ocean biomes, so we can bring back more ice, and then to the badlands biome so I can get hold of more terracotta! Along the way we get the 'Subspace Bubble' advancement for travelling over 7000 Overworld blocks via the Nether.
This technique allows us to travel over 70 blocks per second in a boat, which is still not the fastest we can travel...
Season 2 world seed: -3821426255058016680
Season 2 of the Minecraft Survival Guide will teach you how to master Survival Mode in Minecraft 1.18 and beyond!

I will never grow tired of this series. I’ve practically been following along in my own survival world, and although I don’t have a massive need for an ice road just yet, I think I’ll go find a reason to make one today.

Distant biomes or structures are always a good reason! Track down a mushroom island a few thousand blocks from spawn and make an ice road there. There’s also no reason to limit these to the Nether. They also work just fine in the overworld and the End, so if you need an expressway to and from an ocean monument or across the void to the outer End islands, that works too 😁

I've been playing Minecraft off and on since right before beta came out (so like 12 years). Yet I still find myself watching your videos as they come out. The quality of your content is fantastic and every once in a while I find myself learning something new. Since I've played off and on there are things I missed when I wasn't playing. Like pressing middle mouse button to pick a block. Super helpful.

There are actually 4 different ice types: frosted ice (from frost walker enchanted boots), (regular) ice, packed ice and blue ice. They all have the same "friction", except blue ice. Frosted ice cannot be obtained, even with silktouch, but it can be used to provide temporary "freezing kernels" for regular ice. (Some ice farm designs use this technique by dragging or luring mobs or armor stands with frost walker boots across the water.) Frosted and regular ice (i.e. the two types that will melt again) are transparent, while packed and blue ice are opaque - with all the usual consequences for light and redstone power.

I also recommend bringing conduits to a frozen ocean to make the mining of the underwater parts of the iceburgs much safer. And definitely bring a crafting table to compress the packed ice where you mine it if your intention is to turn it into blue ice and not to use it for item streams.

I highly recomend slabbing. I used glass panes on the sides and there was enough space to nearly suffocate when I accidentally hit shift when I got to a corner. There's also a baby zombified piglin stuck below the panes that can't seem to despawn. I wanted the panes as a guide but from the looks of it here, I don't think that's necessary at all. The blue ice roads are super fun to use. I found a rather enormous, relatively speaking, blue iceberg. I guess I got lucky. That world turned out to be lucky and easy, in general. I have one world that is far more challenging. (Though some would say lucky, because it put me in a crimson forest near a bastion on my first portal to the nether, and when I got my elytra, I found FOUR mansions in a 2000 block radius. Crazy, freaky world.)

@@nick-team-kinetic-energy I think I found one mansion twice, so oops, there were three that were relatively close with elytra, anyway. Also, the fortress was in the crimson forest near my portal, and the bastion was a tad bit out, but not much farther, in the warped forest. I set up my base at -206/1442. The seed is 6144696300915793027. However, if you want something fun and supposedly impossible, check out my very first nether portal experience. Seed -5009356017460867999, build a nether portal at -530/64/-1252, and give it a thorough search. (Hint: the improbable part is at-12/79/-218) I died a lot.

9:21 i usually put a block on which the boat can slow down instead the packed ice in the corner, and it will be much comfortable to turn in a 90 degree angle, because the boat won’t spin around so wildly, even if you don’t handle the boat carefully.

In my ice roads, I line the walls with glass panes. Never measured, but I heard it reduced friction between the walls. Also all my nether roads are at y=15, so mining for ancient debris and making nether roads are always the same thing for me. Another thing I do is I use fence gates at junctions to help stop me when I need to turn a corner, using different color woods to denote different routes.

I have been digging all of my nether transport tunnels at level 13. With an efficiency 5 pick you can basically sprint while making a one by two tunnel. Ancient debris comes easy when widening tunnels on return trips. Also I am considering the idea of using intermittent blocks of soul sand with mending souls speed boots for faster transport without having to locate and mine blue ice, or fiddle with a boat
@Komodo040
@Komodo040 2 жыл бұрын
Just a reminder that if ur comfortable with the nether roof it’s much easier to build these up there because you don’t have to dig out a tunnel. Just throw a wall on one side to hug. A lot of people like to put iron bars or glass panes as a guide and iron bars are 6 ingots to 16 bars which is easy with an iron farm.

@jasonreed7522
@jasonreed7522 2 жыл бұрын
One thing i noticed on bedrock (other than blue ice roads being faster than an Xbox 1 can render in the world), is that you have to keep the boat centered on the ice and can't skip blocks otherwise you pick up friction from other blocks and lose all your speed. All this means is you need to do a better job placing the boat or spend alot more ice on the project to do the entire floor.
@Pixlriffs
@Pixlriffs 2 жыл бұрын
I believe the issue with bedrock edition is that the boat still gets some friction from the slabs on either side. So you need to suspend the ice path higher (or rather, place the slabs one block lower down) in order to avoid that

Weird way of fast travel,but still a very good way to travel like a speed of light(not even close at speed of light) Only disadvantage is it's so expensive so I think I'll stick with Powered Rails Plus my phone can't handle loading chunks as fast as ice travel speed
@AyaanThe0ne
@AyaanThe0ne 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, if you think Blue Ice is expensive, I would just recommend Packed Ice which is still incredibly speedy and, I would think, less expensive than Powered Rails. Even normal ice would be fine since if you are using Powered Rails you're probably not travelling that far and it can negate the slow loading time for the chunks. Only downside to all of this is you having to control the boat with the mobile controls.

I suppose the choice of using the roof or not would mainly be a matter of, do you want to dig tunnels or build spawnproof walls? I can see using the roof and building walls on either side potentially being easier, especially if you personally don't prefer digging for miles lol (I know I can find that tiring after a while). There's also the matter of getting up and down off the roof, although since roof portals connect properly I guess that's not a huge issue unless you need to go down into the Nether Proper for something.

I explained the problem with diagonals in the video. The boat still has a lot of forward momentum when you start a turn. You can’t keep the walls this close because colliding with a diagonal block kills your momentum. So while it’s perfectly possible to build a diagonal or a curve in your ice boat paths, it takes a lot of careful planning and much wider turns, which would require a lot more ice blocks

I've died once so far. Unfortunately it was off-camera - a creeper dropped from a ledge in the dripstone cave base while I was in my inventory crafting something. I talked about it in an earlier episode.

U probably cover this later in the video but why not just break into the nether roof

Breaking bedrock is an advanced technique, and bedrock players can't even use the nether roof for building on.
@Pixlriffs
@Pixlriffs 2 жыл бұрын
You say that as if it’s easier, but the nether roof has its own set of problems. First of all, it’s not an option at all for Bedrock Edition players, who have a hard build limit at Y=128 in the Nether. And now the rest: you need to break bedrock to get back down into the nether cavern, which is something I will probably make a whole separate video about. Portals can link up there, but the minimum Y height makes it harder to precisely link portals in the overworld. There are no landmarks on the roof, so you have to rely more heavily on coordinates for navigation, and every solid block has to be spawn-proofed otherwise you get Ghasts and stuff spawning up there. Plus you still have to actually build a boat road there. TLDR: we’re not ready for the nether roof at this point in the series.

The only problem with going 70 blocks/sec is that the pc will get stuck in time. (I have an old pc though)
