The $70 crayons are water soluble and are meant to be layered. They're actually super vibrant and fun to work with! :) Now, a problem I have with your videos... Is that you don't explain to your younger audience the importance of high quality supplies. Cheap art supplies is great!- If you plan on giving your artwork to friends and family. Artist grade art supplies are light fast, (meaning it lasts a long time without fading, especially when exposed to the sun). Artist grade paints are made with high quality pigments, they're easier to use because the quality is better, creamy, and there isn't as much filler. Therefore, they ARE worth the price, and of course, always do research before buying an item online! The best thing about cheap paints such as crayola is that you can try out watercolors and colored pencils and see if you like it without paying an arm and a leg for it. Experimenting is always, always fun to do! But expensive, artist grade supplies are for artists who take art more seriously than just a hobby. They're for artists who want to make sure their art isn't going to fade within the next three years (or less); it's quality. So, actually both are worth the price, IF they meet your needs!
@tgrady25706 жыл бұрын
Apparently only the Series II ones are meant to be used with water. These ones were Series I, and said Water Resistant
@calmcuke68655 жыл бұрын
@@tgrady2570 Is that the difference? I always thought they were just 2 different versions. What artist would spend 70 on basic crayons? She should compare the water soluble ones with the crayola water soluble oil pastels (which from my experience are trash)
@cupcakesquish59845 жыл бұрын
Personally,I believe that she is sending a good message to younger audiences who can not afford more expensive supplies. She is conveying the message that you can create beautiful art even if you use cheaper supplies. I do agree that if you are more professional you should invest some money into your supplies, but I also believe that the message Rae is sending is good. I am not meaning to criticize or hate, that is just my personal opinion. If you disagree with me that is completely fine.

I am from Switzerland and I gotta tell you that most of the price of the neocolor comes from importation costs to the US! Here I can get them for 34 bucks, which still is quite pricey but not nearly as overpriced as presented.

I payed 80$ for a pack of 40 copic style markers and a case, and your telling me your paying 70$ for a pack of slightly more pigmented crayons markers? Nope.

Some caran dache crayons/pastels can be used as a paint as well, add a few drops of water and scribble the color into the water and you’ve got paint! I’m from Ireland and we use Caran dache in secondary school art classes as crayon and paint! They’re verrryyyy long lasting too. I use mine often and I have the same pack I bought 9 years ago!! (All be it some colors are long used up from the set)
@lordnessa58935 жыл бұрын
I think the caran d’ache are more meant to paint with. That’s why they are more creamy and it might be more a mess in the box.
@margarettmuldoon17535 жыл бұрын
Don’t fear the lion, be the lioness I agree! It explains the fallout
@lordnessa58935 жыл бұрын
Margarett Muldoon I always used the soft neocolors (I think it’s the ones used in the video) with water. Or made a mix of colours, then covered it with black gouache, and after that I scratch the black away to make the colours appear. Like a self made scratchboard. I rarely used them alone, gets messy very fast if I don’t use (and even if I do) something to rest my humid hand on while drawing. (Sorry but I have to rest my hand somewhere or it gets tired very fast). For this purpose, I remember I used some harder ones that don’t dissolve in water.
@lordnessa58935 жыл бұрын
I think the harder ones are more like crayolas... so it would be a better comparison.
@margarettmuldoon17535 жыл бұрын
Don’t fear the lion, be the lioness !!!! Exactly !! Ohhhh wow?! I didn’t realize they could be used that way! You’re inspiring me to go paint now hahaha I thought maybe she’s using different ones to what I used for paining/pastels but you’re right, they aren’t to be used like crayolas
@user-ss2pj1rh7q5 жыл бұрын

I think pushing down so hard on them makes the crayola shed like that. I don’t use a heavy hand w them and you can still get vivid colors but go over it a couple times. Looks and handles much easier. Hope this helps

It's not just about the pigmentation but the blendability and layering, which you barely played with. This type of art crayon is not meant to compete with Crayola, it's for creating high quality artwork, which crayola crayons absolutely do not have the capability to do. I'm sure there are cheaper brands, but many of the lower end brands will also not be able to compare to a brand like Caran d'Ache. I use their colored pencils and they are easily head and shoulders above most other brands in the quality and performance of the pencils, and therefore easily worth the higher price tag.

This “expensive Vs. Cheap” series is how I found you & why I subscribed. I can’t afford to do this research myself but I’m finding I’d rather have a few superior art supplies than many inferior products. You’re helping me decide what’s worth investing in because you check so many different aspects of the product. Sometimes I might think that the cheaper version is fine for me but sometimes I find out that I need to spend the money because of 1 specific difference in the way the products work (eg. I need Copics not Ohulu because I cannot deal with the line smudging due to the longer drying period in the cheaper markers). This is an invaluable service you’re providing me & the least I can do is “like & subscribe” to boost your channel (I know you couldn’t do this sort of thing if it weren’t paying for itself) I’m chronically ill & I’ve had to start looking for arts & crafts that I can safely do in bed as I’m no longer able to go out to my “craft corner” in the garage. It’s not like I’ll never be well enough to do that again but at this point I’m bound to end up trapped in bed again as well, so it makes sense to invest in things I can do in both “health states”. Again “Thank You”, this series is *such* a help
