I have a 2013 Nissan Armada Platinum Reserve… Thank you so much for this video!!! I was not looking forward to a DIY starter replacement. I made myself a jump wire and did this test and sure enough the starter is fine. A couple things I learned… -the first gray harness you find isn’t the starter relay…it’s a fuel injector plug. I’m sure many of you would have known this. For those that don’t, count four gray harnesses from engine front then keep following the wire loom towards the firewall. Beyond the last injector is the harness he shows in this video. Second, when I tried to touch it off on the battery I used the post and it wouldn’t do anything. I had to use the screw at the top of the attached to the red wire box on the lightening cable (dunno what it’s really called). Sure enough it turned over just fine. For my vehicle I found another video that talks about the part I’ve linked. It’s up under your dash directly behind the ignition. It’s 16 bucks on Amazon and you can’t find it at part stores (they want you to replace the whole ignition ($$$$). Even Amazon will say it doesn’t fit if you’re using their garage. Make sure your security light is off on the cluster when you are trying to start it.

@@737mechanic I couldn't see the security light or the dash since I was in the engine bay, but I ended up replacing the ignition relay (Nissan Part #284B7-CW29E), and from the testing I did this evening, it started first crank each time. I'll know better in the next day or two if that was my problem since occasionally, the car would start first try a few times in a row, but then sometimes it took 2-20 key turns for it to try to start. The dealership had the relays for $4.23 a piece. I bought 2. 😁All I do know is that I would have spent the day on the starter, and not replaced the $4.23 relay first, if it weren't for your video.

Thank you. I have a 2008 Titan with 199,000 miles. Little things are starting to go but enough for me to fix. Like clock spring, heater-ac temp control, column shift button for manual shift. These things are involved to fix and get to but not expensive; just time.

I have a 2006 Infiniti QX56 that has intermittent starts. No check engine lights or anything. Just started doing it today. Take about 5-7 key turns before the starter cranks. Any ideas?

Do the check like the video shows and if it test good at the connector replace the starter, if it doesn't test good meaning you are not getting power to the connector when you turn the key then you have a problem somewhere else, could be the starter relay, ignition switch, or bad connection somewhere.

@@mrmic7065 fortunately for mine it was the starter relay. I pulled the relay out and cleaned the contacts and it started right up. I bought a replacement relay on Amazon just in case but it hasn’t ever happened again.

If you turn the key to the run position and jumper the connector and it starts you should be good to drive it home.

You have a heck of a KZbin channel. Saved me $1000+ on not having to change the starter when a mechanic said that the starter was 100% the issue. I've since determined it is NOT an electrical issue but mechanical one - when I press gear selector far forward it will crank (SUV has safety & won't start unless it thinks it is in park). Ever see that? Pretty sure it's the transmission cable - just got one at Nissan parts. Trying to figure out how to replace it. Only could find 1 small KZbin video on it but not very descriptive. Yes, the ignition key is off, if you do leave the key in the on position the engine will start if the starter cranks. If the ignition switch is off the engine should crank if you jump power to the starter like I showed in the video.

Hi and thanks for the video, I'm glad I found it! My 2005 Nissan Titan XE 5.6L V8 sometimes clicks before starting. I was told this likely means the starter is going bad. I'm guessing this test wouldn't work for me since the engine does start. Is that correct?

Usually if the clicking is coming from the starter that means the starter solenoid is going bad so more than likely if you did this test you would have the power at the connector like you should and and if the starter is clicking the starter would need to be changed.

Now I've been trying 30 minutes and just getting the 'click' with no crank. I figure it's the starter solenoid. if they have confirmed the battery is good and fully charged then either a bad starter or a possible bad connection, if it is a bad connection then you may have to pull the intake in order to check the connections at the starter.

How does this verify it’s the starter if the issue isn’t constant. My 2012 Titan will intermittently not start. I made several stops in the span of about a 1/2 hr. it would click several times then it would start. The next stop it took about 15 min. before it would start again. The next morning it started with no issue.

So if it is an intermittent problem you need to have a jumper wire ready so when it doesn't start then unplug that wire and jumper it to see if it will crank. If it doesn't then it is the starter, if it does then plug the wire back together and see if it starts, and if it still doesn't then you have a relay or wiring problem.

If you turn the key and the starter doesn't turn but you jumper it like the video and the starter turns then the starter is fine and I would look at the ignition switch, starter relay, or wiring.

Yes. But there is still a possibility that it could make a noise but still not turn the engine over. A good starter will crank the engine when you jumper that wire.

When the fat in the starter is very old, the magnet no longer pushes the gear on the large motorcycling. Cleaning and greasing new helps there. So first look (remove). ;-)

Every once in a while when we go to start our Nissan NV 3500 turn key and nothing happens then try again and starts it’s done this a handful of times thinking it’s the starter…. Hard to diagnose but definitely think it’s the starter. Thoughts on this

Hard to tell without catching it in the act and checking a few things. It could be the ignition switch, starter, relay, or simply a bad connection.

My ‘15 has an intermittent No start. Alternator & battery are good. I replaced the battery ground cable. When it won’t start, it’s a slow crank or clicking. Battery still shows 12.5 and only drops a couple volts when cranking. I haven’t pulled the intake and I’d rather not if the starter isn’t the problem. What’s weird is when it won’t start, I can jump it and it will start. It’s a new battery with 650 CCA and I pulled the alternator for a bench test and it was good. I’m stumped

It sounds like the starter is probably fine. I would look for a parasitic drain when the vehicle is off.

@@737mechanic It’s my wife’s truck so I decided to drive it for a few days while watching the voltmeter. It fluctuates between 13 and 15 volts. Meaning that it’s either at 13 or 15 while the vehicle is running. This is making me think that the alternator is getting bad information intermittently and not fully charging the battery

Make sure the battery is strong enough. Now that it is getting cooler this is when weak batteries start showing themselves.

At the 2:00 mark you said "All I had to do was reprogram the immobilizer..." Is that something the average garage can do? I'm no mechanic, just an owner looking for information. My keyless 2017 Nissan Titan will not start. At first it would happen intermittently. I thought it might be the battery, but a mechanic tested it a few weeks ago and said it was okay. As of today, I can't get the thing to start at all. Thought I might get lucky by replacing the batteries in two different fobs...no dice. Lights, radio go on, fobs lock and open the doors with no problem. Could it be that immobilizer you spoke of? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. Mark

No, it is only 12 volts when you turn the key to engage the starter. If the test light lights then you are getting power to the starter which would indicate the starter itself was bad.

I have same thing.. Before I try to replace my starter. I am not 100 percent sure that is what it is. for over a year I been having some problems with my 06 starting. I turn the key and nothing but the lights on dash and a click from the relay happen. I would wiggle the key some and try again and it would start. I was thinking its the ignition cylinder because I sprayed lube in it and would start. Well, until it wouldn't. Then thought it was the ignition switch on the back side (white plastic part with the plug). Changed it and truck started about 8 times luckily enough to get back home. Now nothing again!!! Just the same lights on dash and I hear the relay click. HELP..
