It's tough, the scammers try to make the victim fearful that everybody is spying on them. If you go to your local grocery store customer service, there are a LOT of signs up that you shouldn't send money to people you don't know. They also have similar stuff where the gift cards are located. The problem is, the scammer convinces them that even the store clerk is part of the "hackers" and to not trust them.

I think any store with a bitcoin atm needs to put up a big poster warning people about depositing large amounts of money and scams. A simple thing like that could stop a scam right in it's tracks. Also Banks themselves need to warn customers and send out letters warning of what these scams look like. The best tool, the best weapon... is awareness. I think people need to go to senior centers and talk to people to help them understand to never fall for these scams. These scammers are getting more brazen, bold and vicious.

The line between "security" and hassle is a blur. If you want to withdraw _your_ money from a bank, I could argue that (after verifying your identity) making it hard to get _your_ money is an unwanted hassle. It is _your_ money, and you should be able to withdraw it for any reason at anytime with no hassle from the bank. I appreciate some simple questions to help protect victims of crime, but after that, let the customer do what they want.
@Bambus485 ай бұрын
The thing is, you put that money in the bank for the security. What if I am held by gunpoint or something.
@TonyPombo5 ай бұрын
@@Bambus48 Yes, good point. But when does that go too far? If you have $100k in the bank and try to withdraw $30k to buy a boat, or something, and the bank won't give you *your* money for "security reasons". That's a problem right? My friend (with a lot of money) was explaining how his bank allows him to deposit hundreds of thousands as often as he wanted, but was limited to $25k withdraw per day. He was mad because he said it will take him 2 weeks to get all his money back. That seem "wrong" to me. That's not security; that's hassle.
@Player_Redacted5 ай бұрын
@@TonyPombo To be fair, I think the idea of withdrawing large amounts should always be looked at with scrutiny. I'll admit I don't have much experience with multiple banks, but I'd be surprised if closing an account to open another one would require you physically withdrawing all the money and moving it when you could probably just transfer it all by signing a few papers at both banks in person. I mean, are people really trucking around tens of thousands of dollars in cash whenever they move banks?
@TonyPombo5 ай бұрын
@@Player_Redacted "are people really trucking around tens of thousands of dollars in cash whenever they move banks" No, you would receive a cashier's check that you take to the new bank. You could do a wire transfer to the new bank, but that can cost several hundred dollars and requires you to keep the old account open for a while. Another issue: define "large amounts". If you have $100,000 and you decide to withdraw $50k, is that large? What you have $6 million in that account? Is $50k still large? So ya know, a cahier's check written to "cash" is equivalent to cash. So getting a "large' cashier's check is as _concerning_ as cash. Basically, I like freedom. Once I authenticate who I am, and I've listened to a quick "beware of scammers PSA", the bank should get out of the way and give me _my_ money.

S*** even my heart was pounding during that call. All I could think about, this could have been my grandmother, she passed 2 years on the 30th. All i could think about was nanny. Can't lie, the conversation you had with Barb, I was getting choked up 😞 You are a f****n hero bud - don't EVER forget that!

I remember before my grandma passed a couple years ago, she would receive scam calls all the time but I listened in on one and asked her who it was from and knew immediately. I'm glad I was able to tell her they were scams, no company would ever call and ask for personal info or bitcoin transfers. Ever since then she would answer with "I know you're a scammer, now quit calling me!" It's just horrible how people as horrible as this exist out there..preying on the most vulnerable. Whenever I watch videos like this it always reminds me of her, just glad I was able to prevent her from ever falling for it. Pierogi is doing amazing work.

There was a video on PoliceActivity where an elderly lady was feeding a bitcoin machine with money while facetiming the scammer, luckily the Police were called by a good samaritan and he intercepted her and stopped her just in time... The scammer proceeded to fire off abuse at the Officer...

You and your team deserve far more recognition for the work you do. You are literally saving people. There is no higher calling in this world than helping and saving people. You guys rock.

This literally had me in tears. So grateful for Scammer Payback and the entire community for helping fight this war. As we all age and, perhaps, become less engaged and aware of the technology it is absolutely imperative that we have people in our corner helping us stay safe. If there is a group like this in Toronto I would love to volunteer my time and energy in anyway I can (I'll frigging mop the floors of your office) to help the people that are helping the people.

I am retired. About 4 years ago I called my "antivirus" provider to ask a question, but somehow I got the wrong people. They said they were the antivirus company, but I eventually figured out that they were not. However, before I figured it out, they got into my computer and I was watching my computer be controlled by someone else. I quickly got a very bad feeling. After getting away from these "bad guys" I immediately called my bank and told them what happened. They put a red-flag onto my account, and I also quit online banking of all kinds. After watching this video, I think I will never do online banking again. That was a good 4 years ago and so far I have not had anything happen to my account. I hope it stays that way.

As someone hurtling towards "retirement age," this is why I refuse the "convenience" of "smart" phones and online banking. I also grew up with a healthy suspicion of people and their claims - especially when someone calls up to tell me my car is on the southern border of Texas. I have also learned how to swear fluently in Hindi and flame the caller and their families. I get them mad enough to call me back - which COSTS them money.
@sammax42456 ай бұрын
@@davidburke709 It doesn't cost them anything, the calls are free using internet. Online banking is very safe unless YOU give your personal information away to scammers.

While I do use online banking, what they installed was likely Connectwise, which in my view is nothing more a Trojan itself. It boots with the computer and you have no warning it's running. I would have an IT person check. I know exactly where it exists. Software like that should not exist.
@GayGHvain876 ай бұрын
Good thinking :) Yeah you should be fine. Banks have their issues of course, but still pretty safe overall. Glad you caught on ! My mom's also retired a few years ago from a position in logistics, and she's quick to catch on if something feels off. I'm glad I don't have to worry about her entire savings being stolen. She has them in a standard physical bank, and hangs up on people trying to sell her stuff she doesn't need, so if she's ever in contact with actual scammers, lord help them haha! :D

The female scammer did the scammers no favors with her broken English and not making any sense. I'm glad she wised up, likely when she saw the liquor store and finally realized how sketch it all seemed. You are saving people's livelihoods. Thank you.

My mother lost 10 000 Australian dollars that was meant for her funeral as she had stage four pancreatic cancer. I think it was the same scumbags. She died two months later and almost her last words were " What have I done to you kids, I am so sorry. How will you bury me now?" We reassured her we will get the money back, and we did get some of it back, but instead of dying with our love surrounding her, she died scared and ashamed.

@dennisd95546 ай бұрын
It's getting worse because now they can sample your voice and basically talk to your grandmother spoofing them and make it more convincing. Every family needs a "challenge" word where you say a given word or phrase and if they don't respond properly, you know its a scam.
