There are several things that I've loved for a while now... One is that you Americans or maybe I should say 'people in the west', do so much by yourselves, fixing things up all on your own, your rides, cars, houses, boats, freakin planes, and helicopters! I love it. When I was in florida a few years ago to study, I was floored by the beautiful garages I saw all over my neighborhood with all those tools crowded on them walls. And the fact that yawl know how to use them. I followed suit and realized from You guys that there HAS to be a workshop manual somewhere. And i have become a DIY guy. I am from india, and we have mechanics and servants (called helpers haha) and cleaners and drivers; we rarely do repairs on our stuff ourselves. And I love youtube for opening up a window into all yawls worlds for us to learn from. I have a duke 390 and I have done all the basic servicing myself. Comment getting too long, but to give some perspective, almost no one NO one uses or has heard of the torque wrench (that I use) in most mechanic shops in India too. Even at ktm, ..I've checked! Haha. Kept safe in some hidden drawer somewhere. Its just 'monkey see monkey do' and efficiency can go hang. I love it! Sorry for the long comment. And i really like what your bike's looking like after the mods! Sexy stuff. Thank u for this video. The one finger clutch thing i am really interested in.

Flip the break pedal up, more comfort when standing. Use Locktite (the non-permanent). Careful to ensure you have freeplay with the Camel 1-finger pin, thin line to clutch slippage under heavy load. If you plan 50/50 riding and no hard offroad bashing, stock rims are fine. If you plan on more offroad, consider PP DID Wheels and decent tires, makes the Bike behave like a 690 offroad.

A fairly inexpensive way to get all-day riding comfort from your "R" is to install an "S" seat with the KTM accessory cool seat cover. The seat cover is constructed to give some "suspension" and allow cool air to flow through it. It has been a magic combo, allowing me to ride a couple of 12 hours stints in the saddle with comfort. I will also mention that because I ride a lot of loose and often deep gravel, I thought I'd try the Motoz Adventure front tire. The combination of the 790 and the Motos Adventure is the best gravel combo I've ever had, and I've had quite a few.

Nice set up! Tusk stuff is nice for the $$. Like those bars but I can't justify the cost since my off roading is less vigorous. I wen't with the Rade Garage foot pegs, lighter aluminum (I prefer), larger, lower and orange anodize for some bling. Camel stuff is nice, so far I have the awesome clutch arm. Since you are going to do the Cyclops lights, do the turn signals too while at it. They are awesome! Just do it! I recommend the Seat Concepts Comfort in either std. or tall (I have the std.). For the money they have to be the best deal in AM seats! Lots of exhaust options out there and with the luggage, will need a heat shield for most. If you do swap I'd highly recommend looking closer at the Danish made Dobermann in Ti; 3 lbs. lighter, impeccable craftsmanship, nicely priced, great looking and sounding (even with the cat). Agree with your view of the Karoo 3's; OK tires, I had them on my DR650 too but don't like the front for off road, rear not too bad. They aren't the smoothest street tire either which I did not think I noticed until I switched them out to Motoz GPS, noticeably smoother on pavement and better off road in most cases. Trying hard to wear the Karoo's out for better tires! Oh yea, put in a LiFePo battery and save 5 more pounds! I have a 12 year old Shorai (yes, 12 years!) that is still going strong in my DR! With the Ti exhaust and LiFe batt. the improved 'flickability' is noticeable.

Really like to 790/890 as a lighter and less powerful option to replace my 2015 R1200gs for long dirt excursions in South Africa. The only reason I've not made the change is I need a reliable bike that I can trust ,and I'm not sure KTM is that bike. The GS is actually remarkably capable and massively comfortable on endless dirt roads, only issue is controlling that torque off road for long periods is torture on my right wrist, much more so than the weight handicap. I get the distinct sense you found KTM's Achilles heel seeing you own a T7 right now (I owned a 1190 adventure R for 45,000 kms, which wasn't too bad I must add, but not suitable for riding solo far away from a dealer. Anyone that disagrees has never replaced an air filter on one in the bush - a rather important thing to do in very dusty environments and yes I know they made the process simpler on the 790/890). Other than the displacement, would really want to know what improvements were made moving from the 790 to 890 especially in addressing longevity.

Good review of farkles you are using. I like the fact that Tusk is providing some competition to MM, whose bags are very expensive if you live outside the US. Yesterday my friend turned up on his 790 Rally and he had a superb bashplate which was framed mounted and had an extra exhaust cover plate. And big congratulations for remaining sponsor free. There are too many “individuals” on YT who are being given products for free, which in my mind compromises the message to riders who are look ing for objective opinions. If you remove the cat, you need to re-map ( flash ) the ECU. Otherwise, the engine will work with excess air to fuel ratio, gas is hotter, in the long term you will damage the valves and head. Modern engines work already with a very lean mixture from the factory, don't touch the cat, unless you flash the ECU on a proper test bench.

I was listening to your comment around changing the exhaust for better sound, unless you are going to a decat you are wasting your time. I crashed my 790 and damaged the muffler so replaced with the akra which made negligible difference, I have video I can post of the sound difference which I can share if you like. The interesting thing was I think mine ran worse with the akra and catalytic converter it seemed to run rich and lost that raw throttle response which was especially noticeable in rally mode. I then put in an arrow decat and everything went back to normal in terms of tune, I didn’t notice any real performance gain but the sound is now what you would expect. I have read lots of people saying it will mess with the tune but My KTM dealer here seems to to thing it is fine and not a problem certainly from a riding perspective runs much like stock but with a beautiful growl without being obnoxious. So in summary great to do but only with the decat or you will be very disappointed. cheers Geoff

I wen't with a Seat Concepts std. comfort. Still kinda' firm but flat and more surface area for support so a lot better. Wen't with the Diamante vinyl too, very sharp looking!

A combination of the stock "S" seat, which fits on the "R", with the KTM accessory cool seat cover is magic for me. I have spent a couple of 12 hour days on my bike equipped like this (over 1000 km), something I couldn't do before.

The chevron pattern on the front tire almost makes it seem like it is mounted backwards. Is that the correct orientation?

Yep, I thought the same thing but it is correct.

Since the front tire isn't driven, I believe the reverse pattern is used for better handling and stopping. It digs in if the tire starts to wash out, or during heavy braking. I'm pretty happy with these tires... So far have handled more than I expected them to. Bike is looking good. 👍

@@dand.4657 On my XR650L after I had just bought it, I mounted the Tusk Dualsport front tire backwards resulting in reversed Chevrons as on the 790 R stock tires....the bike was nearly unrideable with very little directional control in both hardpack and soft sand. I was almost ready to sell the bike! Rotated the tire and it rides fine now. Still not the best tire for directional stability but I'm having fun until it wears out.

I have the Adventure R with stock seat, I don't ride a massive amount but have spent 600K plus days in the saddle without too much issue, in fact I have a 650 Dakar with a way softer seat and would say the KTM seat is at least as comfortable if not more after the same amount if riding

I've ordered a seat concepts comfort seat. I ordered it on July 17 and it still has not shipped. Parts for this bike are in demand and therefore you might end up waiting. I installed a BDCW skid plate and light brackets. The skid plate is probably more rugged than I will need for the riding I tend to do. I went with the pannier rack from Mosko Moto (which are made by Outback Mototec) and I already had the Mosko bags on another bike. Still need the hand guards. I might be interested in doing the decat in the future, so please make a video about that. I need to finish wiring the lights and install and wire the grip heaters.

Have you experienced any issues with your fuel gauge? At less than 1000 miles it always displayed empty, no matter how full. The KTM service mechanic told it was common due to ethanol causing swelling in the fuel level sensor. I hope not. I have begun using no ethanol gas. I live near a lake and the gas stations sell recreational gas.

I know this is a really old vid but I am curious how this 790/890 would compare to the Tenere. I'm only 5'8'' and was thinking about the KTM because of how the weight is low. Having real second thoughts on the T7 after your "D" grade on picking it up. That said, I'm am concerned with reliability on the KTM. Thanks for the feedback.

I have a video coming soon on this. I prefer the T7 because it's japanese and built like a swiss watch. The KTM is faster, better suspension, more fuel, but the quality is lacking, and I don't trust it in the middle of nowhere like I do the T7

Given the side fairings are removable for storage purposes, how do you find the pressure on those fairing mounts with the rackless system? I wouldve thought after many miles on bumpy trails, the weight of the side bags would become a bit much

Haven't heard any arguments for environmental reasons to have catalytic converter from any bike-youtubers. Bikers want the be close to nature and still only thing they seem to care is the need for more noise, no matter the price. Learn to respect nature, because your life depends on it. Nice bike!

I'd be more afraid to damage the pannier rack when driving it around without the paniers on. That's the one problem with having a pannier rack. If you want to ride without taking your panniers you have all of the added weight and width of the pannier rack.
