This video is very good at showcasing why FWD was commonplace on higher-end cars back in the 80s and 90s. In an era where 300hp was a shit ton, the configuration did not present a significant drop in straight-line speed, and was considered a lot safer (ESC wasn't a thing either). Case in point, the FWD Impala with the 3800SC out-accelerating the RWD one with the LT1. From a beancounter's perspective (and this was reflected by the statements of executives at the time, especially at GM and Chrysler) RWD was just a vestigal and outdated technology they used because it was already developed and ready to use. Now, people in the car community saw the bullshit quickly. The FWD cars, even when quick enough, did not offer comparable excitement and cornering performance - with a Car and Driver test ridiculing FWD as a viable option for performance back in 1984 - and in the performance industry, where higher amounts of horsepower were dealt with on a regular basis, it was already well known that weight transfer completely cripples an FWD car's acceleration and makes them too slovenly in handling, especially with the twist-beam axles many manufacturers used back then. This is why everybody rioted at rumors of the new Mustang and Camaro being RWD, forcing the manufacturers into continuing their respective muscle cars as RWD models and releasing the FWD sports cars beside them (well, in reality far under them) as the Probe and Beretta respectively. The FWD luxury fad died soon after, with only GM and Ford's out-of-touch sluggishness keeping some of it alive into the early 10s. Idk why I followed through with posting this rant lol
@kskip42422 жыл бұрын
As long as you set the suspension up to transfer the weight to the front wheels when you take off on a front-wheel drive it will be just as fast as a rwd. My 2012 impala does 0-60 in 5.0 sec and best quarter mile of 13.7 @ 101mph. Still has more in it

Those 3800 SC don't mess around. The Wbody cars are solid factory and some damn good builds can be made with them. Currently building an 02 Grand Prix GTP myself. The main weak point of the platform is the transmission however but with a built trans and a proper setup you can avoid that too.

So...the 8th gen video is an 04 or 05 supercharged 3.8L, which the 240hp rating is correct, but the 8.2 second 0-60 is what the non supercharged 3.8 gets. The supercharged ones are 6 to 6.5 seconds. But the 0-100 is correct. I know this because I had an 03 200hp 3.8L monte carlo SS(00-03 were not supercharged, and 04 had 2 SS trims, 1 SC and one not) and currently have an 06 242hp 3.9L monte carlo. The 06 hits 60 in 7.0 and 100mph in 19.0 while the 03 hit 60 in about 8.7 and I never took it to 100. The supercharged 3.8s hit 60 quicker than my 06 but that's because of the torque. After 1st gear, that extra torque isn't as useful. The 3.9L holds its gears longer and has VVT so it has a better top end than the 3.8s did. The supercharged 3.8 hits 100 right about where the 3.9L does, but the 3.9L car will pass the SC 3.8L shortly after. So a 1/4 mile run goes to the SC 3.8 but a 1/2 mile will go to the 3.9L, if the speed limiters were removed.
@michaelmohrle17732 жыл бұрын
The 04-05 one here is not supercharged SS, the spedometer is 140 on them the other trims are 120.

@@michaelmohrle1773 good to know. Then that means this guy stole someone's video of a non supercharged 3.8L and put the times and specs of a supercharged one on it, and counted the rev as the start of the 0-60 time when the driver actually released the brakes like 2 seconds after he started revving. My 03 monte SS had a 140 speedo without being supercharged. I thought the impalas were the same but I guess not. Just counted and got about 7 second 0-60 and 18-19 seconds to 100. Way faster that a normal 3.8L...that video doesn't make sense. Its either supercharged or modded.

@@michaelmohrle1773 also good to know. So then this thing in the video is a modded 3.8L. I had an 03 monte SS with the N/A 3.8L AND my 06 3.9L monte at the same time. The 3.8L wasn't even close to what this video shows. It did 0-60 in about 8.5 whereas the 06 does it in 7 flat and does 0-100 in 19. And my 06 only had 61,000 miles on it when I got it in 2017, and only has 99k now. When I watch all the supercharged 3.8L videos, their 0-60 is quicker by about half a second to a whole second, but the 0-100 is almost the same as my 3.9L. And if you look it up on paper, the SC3.8 is like 0.2 quicker than the 3.9L, and the 3.9L is quicker to 110mph than the SC3.8.

I had an 03 monte carlo SS with the 3.8L. I currently have an 06 3.9L monte AND an 08 uplander cargo van with the 3.9L. No joke, I bet the van could stay with the 03 SS. And the 06 3.9L monte is way quicker than the 3.8 was.
