It spun a bearing which produces enough heat that weakens the rod bolt and it stretches, looseness the rod nut or nuts usually the one on the downward side of the rotation which lets the rod cap separate can snap the other bolt in the vid I can see that the crack end of the rod looks darkened which indicates spun rod bearing under load and when the cap came off the crank hits the other side of the rod causing the rod to be bent like it was. Possible the cap came off can the rod stayed near the top of travel then being hit by the crank .

those p-pumps dont really need the timing pin. They can be easily rotated and just show the tooth in the hole. that along with the springs that help drive the thing you don't really need to worry about that tooth getting it out of alignment. If you ask me that little plastic pin is only good for giving you a headache when they break after you forget to take them out, then you're forced to take the heavy ass pump back off and drain the oil is shake it upside down over your head until it falls out. 😫

I have a 1990 CIH 1660 combine that had a reman 8.3 engine in it. Story I was told was 1990 was the first year the 8.3 Cummins was used in place of the IH DT466. As such Cummins initiated a big recall of engines in the combines & paid for the labor & a replacement engine. They were short block replacements & used most of the bolt on parts from the original engine or new bolt on parts were used. With respect to the engine in my combine, no thread locker (loctite) or a mechanical thread locket was used on the engine oil pump & as a result the 4 attachment bolts backed out & the oil pump disengaged. Smoked the motor. I replaced the 8.3 Cummins w/ a 1979 DT 436 out of my old IH 1460 combine. I have harvested the past 2 seasons w/ no problems. Pretty straight forward swap. Better fuel economy for sure.

Back in the 50's my old man had a Chrysler car and the motor went so he got a 225 out of an Oliver combine and he got the biggest kick out of buying and gas and getting the oil checked because of the look on the attendants faces when they saw the green motor and reacted with 'WTF is that?' He also bought 'rebuilt' motors with a fence post where the piston should have been

Strangely Ironic I disagree with you’re statement. It does in fact take a certain skill set to engineer a processor than be a farmer, that I agree with. But as a farmer and as a mechanical engineer, I see both sides, to an extent. Farming and engineering are both vast field with many different skill and knowledge requirements. I know a lot about growing a crop, I know a lot about keep the farm going. I also know what it takes to design and build machines from scratch. Someone from a farming background makes much better designs and equipment than someone from a suburb. I’m not tooting my own horn, I’m a younger guy, but I work with older engineers that farm too. Learned a lot from those guys, learned a lot from the farm, way more than any school school will ever teach you.

fun fact, the Case 1680 combines with 8.3 Cummins were prone to dropping valves because they never regeared the combine when going from Case engine to Cummins. Case 8.3 was fine at 2700 rpm but that was the very limit of the Cummins so after a few thousand hours valve springs say nope and then you get to replace the engine.

What happened : injector release pressure too low (dirty tip/worn tip) or high (sticky needle) will change the injection timing,create a huge load on the rod bearing because most of the time,its spray pattern is very ugly. bearing will fail,because suffer from pressure peaks at each injection event. Cranck fatigue,because of the twisting force created by one cylinder wich is working non synchro with others.

Had a N14 Cummins do the exact same thing to me at 3am loaded with 23ton of hot asphalt paving a 4 lane highway. The mechanic who’s also part owner of the company check the truck over with me before I left for the shift which was the only thing that saved me from getting fired. Went from running awesome to a jack hammer to ejecto rod bearing threw the block side in under a minute and the holes on the cap were still machine shop clean.

@@jdrok5026 let me clear a few things up for you. The first engine to bear the Power Stroke name, the 7.3L Power Stroke V8 is the Ford version of the Navistar T444E turbo-diesel V8. Introduced in 1994 as the replacement for the 7.3L IDI V8, the Power Stroke/T444E is a completely new engine, with only its bore and stroke dimensions common with its predecessor (resulting in its identical 444 cu in (7.3 L) displacement). In line with the IDI diesel, the Power Stroke was offered in three quarter ton and up versions of the Ford F-Series/Ford Econoline product ranges. In 1981 Ford signed an agreement with International Harvester to produce diesel engines for their light truck line. This led directly to the production of the 6.9-liter IDI diesel. The engine is developed as a low cost, light weight diesel that fit where a V8 gas engine would, to try to convert their gas engine customers to diesel and to sell to Ford for use in F-Series light duty trucks and E-Series/Econoline vans. Before it could be sold to Ford however, Tenneco Inc. purchased in the "Harvester" division of International Harvester which was moved within their Case heavy equipment line. The remainder of what was International Harvester was renamed Navistar, which concentrated on engine and medium/heavy truck development. Consequently, these are actually International-Navistar IDI engines. so, no case never made any diesel engine for the case/ih combine. they farm it out, just like everyone else.

I use a number of medical instruments when I get into an unusual problem on my engine. For instance I bought a pair of surgical pliers used to install a pin into a leg bone and join the two parts together. The guy I bought them from was a midiCal instrument salesman. It is made of stainless steel and does not twist or bend. This was one of his samples which sold for $300 new.The jaws are at a thirty degree angle to the handles. I have been able to reach really strange places around my engine such as the rear row of spark plug wires which require you to pull the intake manifold without this surgical tool. I have a collection of dental picks also a very handy 8" wide bone saw which cuts like a scalpel.

Wire locked rod bolts mmm. I had to rebuild a pre ww2 straight 8 and it had wire locked rod bolts where one had come loose and spun the rod bearing. It cost me a fortune so now if I come across some I use 7471 primer then add some 272 to the nut. Still torque them to the recommended setting but you cant mess around it goes off pretty quickly. The only prob is when they need to be removed you will need a torch. I make a note on the block behind the flywheel with a paint pen for the next sucker.

I've got a buddy, worst farm mechanic we know. On two separate occasions he has gone to change the oil. Then forgot to replace that oil before he started it. It still runs. And old Klisby told me that when you're torquing down a 3406 cat you do the final head torque, go home, come back in the morning and torque it again. From experience building cats, hes right.

I do that anyway on every engine I build. Takes an extra day but never had one come back yet. Torquing a head is definitely a job that should be treated as methodical and not rushed.

Yeah our 3rd season NH CX8080 dumped a piston and shrapnel out after over fueling which we found out that run of Iveco motors had a "wee" problem with, very expensive crate motor.

On the combine alternator, you can get a screen shield to put on the rear of the alternator to keep trash out. I don’t know whether it is a Case IH part number or a Case New Holland part number.

as a chevy guy..... i just look at rear main seal leaks as "under-body rust proofing" because if you wanted NO leaks from your small block chev.... you would end up putting about 300 rear main seals in every 100,000 miles the 4.8/5.3/6.0 dont have this issue..... but the old "350/5.7" trucks damn sure did
