I love this ... reminds me of the time I was engaged to an Arabic guy 30 years ago and he taught me Arabic. All the words and phrases.. To my surprise, his family thought it was cool and got a kick out of it ... except for a few of his "nosy and annoying" aunts who started to size me up and down and he told them, "don't talk crap about her, she understands.." they quipped and said.. using their hands and all, "why would you teach her Arabic?!" He said, "because of women like you.." lol They were, for the most part.. a pretty laid back family

I just remember a recent story I was telling, I made like 20 hand gestures the entire minute. I think I get it from my dad because he’s arab but also grew up in Italy and he always speaks with his hands.

Halo from Indonesia, I hv been visited UAE for 2 times. And am really wanted to be able to speak Arabic and learn more about their culture
@kb-tu2kf6 жыл бұрын
My father used to tell me not to make gestures while speaking. He gave me certain public figures and orators as exemples of calm and composure (may be one in a million). He didn't succeed : I can't help using my hands. We Arabs, and may be Mediterraneans as a whole should find it easy to learn the sign language for the deaf, we already know half of the signs. By the way, I think Americans too use their hands quite a lot, but some of their signs are a mystery to me and, to me, often convey the opposite message to what they say.

I’ve had an Arab friend use the “come here” gesture in a situation where I couldn’t hear him. Except he did it with quick repetition, so I misinterpreted it and kept backing away. It looked more like a signal for “shoo, go away”! My (white American) idea of a “come here” gesture is similar, but with the palm UP, not down. It’s easy to assume all body language is as universal as the smile, but nope.
