Hi Jules, as a game developer myself. The Wipeout-Xl bug is just incompetence of the developer. They forgot to implement a piece of code that normally makes sure that the speed in videogames is the same across the board. So regardless of your actual processing speed of your hardware any game should run at a fixed speed, because otherwise it causes problems like you mentioned with Wipeout. In unity for example when calculating the speed for something we use a multiplier of Time.deltaTime. This just makes sure that it won't use the actual capable speed of your computer but the speed that the developers want to use. Now with a console videogame this problem might not be noticeable because they should all run on the same hardware, but even then it is necessary because you never know if the chipset gets upgraded in future versions of a console.

I remember playing an old D&D game on PC that had this same problem. There was one area that had a timer, and you had to get through it before the timer ran out or you lost instantly. The timer was based on the clock speed of the processor it was programmed on, and so with a faster computer, the timer could burn through 20 minutes in less than a second.

The two examples I could think of were making it so that hitting objects with attacks didn't drop your health in Comix Zone. And in Sonic 2, when you plug it into Sonic and Knuckles, fix the issue with Knuckle's jump height where he couldn't hit the only weak point on the final boss.

I recall that "Jetset Willy" the highly anticipated sequel to the ZX Spectrum hit "Manic Miner" couldn't be completed because just ONE of the hundreds of items you had to pick up was in the wrong place and you couldn't get it without dying. There was a POKE (Hex code) you could enter manually (EVERY TIME you wanted to run the game) that would remedy this, but only if you had the magazine the code was printed in...

There's a bug on Jak 2 that made impossible to beat the game; If you advanced in the race minigame eventually one of the races will spawn on the same spot of a main mission, and the game just can't handle two mission start point close to each other, so the main mission will disapear and the race minigame will take the place. I always like to make the sidequests before the main quests so when I discover that I will had to start the whole game just because I play some races I just give up and abandon the game. And I discover that bug ain't fixed even in the re-realed trilogy version.

ALBION - a science fiction / fantasy cross over RPG, made by Blue Byte. Most of it was either in 2D (manoevering across the landscape) or turn based (combat on a grid). Unfortunately, there were 3D passages, too. In one of them, you had to run along a wall and hit three switches which would open a door on the other side of the hall, then turn and run straight at the door and pass through in order to reach the next area. The problem? It was timed. And guess which clock was used to check the time. Hint: It was not the clock that is used to tell which time it is. That leaves the CPU- and so it was unplayable with anything beyond a Pentium 120.

(You'd have to apply the patch directly over the game's ROM file) It's not perfect, but it (1) fixes E.T.'s sprite color, (2) fixes the collision detection with pits, and (3) slows down the energy timer so you can actually take time to move around and explore.

I would argue for Mercenaries 2: World in Flames. Technically, it wasn’t pre internet, but it was slightly too early for post release patches for console games to be a thing, which is a shame because there are a few moments where the game Pandemic Studios was trying to make shines through the bugs and it is glorious, but then another small bug disrupts it.

I have a suggestion for a list. Multiplayer Games That Are Still Going Despite Being Declared Dead. The playerbase has dropped, the esports league closed down, reviewers and internet commentors have smugly declared that this game is finished and you're stupid if you still play it. And yet, the game still has an active playerbase, you can get matches at any hour of the day and the devs are even still supporting it with patches and new content! In spite of the judgment of the gaming community who don't play it, this "dead" game is still going. Maybe not strong, but it refuses to die. Heroes of the Storm is one example.

For some reason, this reminds me of the demo version of Star Wars: Dark Forces. It was available from Lucas Arts as a 100+ MB download, back in the days of dial-up internet, where it would take roughly four minutes to download 1MB. Now, Lucas Arts was an American company. I live in Australia. To get the file, you needed to dial into an American number, with costs associated for an international phone call, which were prohibitively expensive back then. 60MB, IIRC, at four minutes per megabyte, or 240 odd minutes = approximately a four hour international phone call. Now, I was quite prepared to do this, advised my parents that I would be doing this, and told them I would pay for the cost of the call (I had just started working full time, and still lived with them). Three and a half hours into the download, my dad picked up the phone to make a call… Connection lost. File corrupted. No chance of simply resuming the download, and had to start from scratch… Tried again later that night, when everyone was asleep, and finally got the demo. But the phone bill! Yikes. For young me, though, totally worth it, to be able to play an early access version of something new for Star Wars (even though I could easily have purchased three or so copies of the retail version for the cost, when released…). I would not do this, these days, if circumstances were similar. This was the incident that convinced me to have my own phone line installed at the house, for uninterrupted modem use. Cheers,

10:34 that's actually not that uncommon. Games run part of their code on screen refreshes, every time there's a new frame part of the code runs again. If you programmed a game for a console with a fixed or capped frame rate in mind and moved to a PC with a virtually unlimited one, certain calculations will be off. That's why, for example, you can't beat the 360 spin trick on GTA SA's auto school on 60fps, It will always think you oversteered

here is an idea for a tues your own adventure video, how about the best games with an inspiring message. the main reason for this is that there is a lot of games were the main message is "everything is bad give up all hope" or that are just dark and edgy for little to no reason at all and we all need some hope.

Ten games you walked away from to save the characters. I remember stopping before the end of RDR to save John from his fate. Same with repeat life is strange playthroughs. Also love the series, the shining light of whatculture

Undertale‘s ending pretty much revolves around this idea. Never touched it after finishing it once.

Same with RDR; beautiful morning at the farm, wife, son and factotum wanted something, I saved and never returned.

Older games got patched, they just required re-releases or "update discs" depending on the platform.

I have never been able to beat a souls-like game but I'll tell you what, when The Lion King released, I was able to beat it on hard without losing a life. Granted, it took a while to "get good", but as long as you can get past the ostrich part, the rest is fairly easy.

Suikoden 5 for ps2 needed a patch. There's a game breaking glitch in it which crashes the game half way through. There's a spot where you walk across a bridge and when the game is supposed to load the new area it crashes. Fortunately it doesn't happen all the time, but too often. I had to clean the disc and stuff for it to get fixed. Yeah I know that sounds like a disc problem, but it was really a game glitch.

I don't know if this was common knowledge back then when Jak X: Combat Racing was out but if you had a psp with the Daxter game and connected it to your ps2 when Jak X was running you could unlock Daxter as a driver in the multiplayer

Wait. Are you telling me that's what went wrong with my SoulCalibur 3 save file? So if I happen to put it on a memory card with nothing else, then it should be all good right? Or is there something else to it that I need to know?

You know what's the worst part about the Wipeout problem? That devs all over the world didn't learn anything from this. Even today there are still games with that kind of problem. At least one or two Shantae games run like they are on fast forward mode on modern PC's and there are still games that break in one form or another when they are played with high framerates. You get physics bugging out or enemies dealing more damage just because the game runs with more than 30 or 60 frames per second.

It is actually a simple problem to solve for a developer nowadays. However, maybe back then it was not as easy. There is a line of code that you normally need to add when calculating the speed in your videogame. For example: It is called Time.deltaTime in the Unity engine. What it does, it makes sure that the speed is not based on the processing power of your hardware. If it still happens nowadays than it's just incompetence of a developer not knowing what they are doing.

Very nice list, as always =) I do have to nitpick on one thing, though: Lion King wasn't a Capcom game, it was actually developed by Westwood Studios (yes, that Westwood) and published by Virgin! :P And I remember reading the SC3 savefile problems were even worse... either way, I'm not deleting that savefile ever -_- Lastly, wasn't there a soccer game released for the ol' Saturn (I believe related to the 1996 Summer Olympics) that had such a gamebreaking bug that the EU version was pulled from shelves just a few weeks after release? I'm not being able to find anything about this, but maybe someone can confirm it :D Cheers!
