I couldn’t use second hand underwear, linens and shoes/socks because ew, or mattresses, again, ew. Advice please?

Of course. I understand that. I focus on biodegradable vs. non biodegradable to make most of my decisions. Underwear/socks - buy organic and mend if broken Shoes - absolutely fine to buy used. You can often find shoes that are “second hand” but never used. If not choose natural shoes (however this is very difficult to find) Mattresses - organic latex or a 100% organic cotton futon are pretty much the only options. Find a 100% organic latex mattress and change cover after 10-20 years instead of buying a new one. A organic latex mattress should be able to last for at least 40 years and then biodegrade. Linen - if you’ve ever slept at a hotel, you’ve slept on used linens. You can always sterilize by boiling. If not organic cotton or linen are both good options. Make them yourself to ensure there is no polyester thread or find a company which makes 100% natural linen. Also inquire about bleach/dyes before purchase. Hope this helps! ❤️

With the exception of underwear, I have bought and used these items second-hand usually without issue. They can be disinfected. Be careful with used mattresses from the street though. I had a bad bed bug experience.

Ask your grandparents for advice. Back then they probably didnt have shopping malls and they would inherit lots of items from the previoua generations. If you jave to buy, buy something similar to what they bought that will last you a lifetime.

Thanks for that, very inspiring! Actually I have been buying a few things lately, but in the cause of living a less throw-away life. I have bought handkerchiefs - first time I have used material handkerchiefs since I was in my teens I think, the aim is not buying disposable tissues any more. Working out well though. I have bought re-usable face pads so I can stop using so many cotton wool pads for cleaning my face. I am on a mission to ban sponges from my life! We had a washing-up system that was convenient but used way too many sponge/scourers. Expensive and wasteful. I have bought a natural loofah pad to clean the sink and basins with and begun using cloths for washing up. More laundry but that is working out OK. I don't buy aluminium foil any more - I found some non-stick sheets for our baking trays and grill pan. Not perfect I admit but better than buying foil. I want to reduce the waste in our rubbish bin that goes to land fill so began a campaign to use much less paper towel. We bought recycled but still..... After we lost our dear little cat a few months ago I realised we would not need paper towel as much as before. Any cat owner will know what I mean! And gradually we are using less and less. So I have been trying to learn new, sustainable habits and though I won't be changing the world any time soon, it gives me satisfaction. And yes, we are already cutting our waste by quite a lot! Love listening to minimalist videos by you and your husband - you both have such a great perspective. Sorry this is such a long comment though!

Thanks so much Susan! They are all amazing options! So sorry to hear about your cat! I have also used a coconut scrubber (I buy it in the health food store) and baking soda together with a cloth, both these works wonders for scrubbing especially kitchen and bathroom. :)

Happiness is definitely not found in stuff. I thought it was when I was younger. I bought handbag after handbag since I love handbags. I still do. I did buy a new backpack though last summer because my old one from the 90’s completely broke. That was sad because I really loved my backpack, being a memory from my days in Sydney. My new backpack will hopefully last forever. I have another smaller backpack from 1999. Backpack purse? It’s versatile and precious to me. Bought it when I was close to giving birth to my second child. I still use it. Somehow I always come back to that one. I also switch handbags with my daughter. That way I get a change and we both have a “new” handbag. I wish I could do the same with shoes, but she’s taller than me and her feet are several sizes up. 😄😄😄 Yes, we do have all we need. We just need to see it. Sometimes I can’t see it myself. I do have an advantage though. I hate shopping! Lol? I’ve always found it so boring. Especially clothes. Hahaha! Great video👍👍👍💗🌹

Thank you so much 💗 I can not wait until my sister is a bit older and then I will happily share clothes with her, given we are in the same country... haha! So lucky that you and your daughter can share, that warms my heart 💗

Moreover, it's a lot easier to gather personal belongings when moving from one place to another and minimum time to reorganize them once the practitioner of minimalism has moved in to another place. This is also applicable when situations like fires or any disaster woukd take place and speedy evacuation is necessary.

Those are all great ideas and all, really. But what about people that "stuff" is their job ? Like myself for example, I am a crochet designer and I design cloths for a living. Does that mean that I am contributing to the capitalist world of view, me buying yarn I need for a project or just something I would like to make ? Would be really interesting to hear your point of view on this. Thank you in advance and I love your channel I only discovered it yesterday but I am in love :) Thank you for all that youre doing and I wanted to say I agree with most of what youre saying.

Thank you so much! ❤️ That is so kind. Well, I think it's an interesting discussion. Not sure if there is a yes or a now answer to that. Maybe it depends on the fabric, dyes, ethics etc. I think the better we do things the better, but I think hand made is always better, because it means a step away from capitalism!

I agree with you 100%! We don’t need to promote “baby steps”. We are in an emergency situation on this planet so people need to make major lifestyle changes. The world needs everyone to go vegan even if they don’t care about non humans. The only way the planet will heal is to end animal agriculture. Minimalism is about being responsible and intentional with our consumption. ⚡️💚💚💚✌🏻
