The reason Nauru is like that is because of one word, phosphate. Ninety percent of the island is covered with phosphate deposits (because of all the seabirds that stopped there before continuing their crossings) that were mined to the point it's non-arable. This phosphate actually made Nauru the richest country in the 80s, but the industry collapsed in 2002, quickly making them one of the poorest and having to rely on Australia who they made an agreement with to get aid in return for housing Australia's asylum seekers in a detention facility. And because Nauru has an airport that they were forced to build by the Japanese, they can easily get canned goods in. That aside, love how Monaco is so small that a freakin' MARINA makes up a part of the country shape

So regarding Rhode Island, the first to settle Rhode Island was William Blaxton, who was ALSO the first to settle Boston. He decided to join the Ferdinando Gorges Expedition in 1623. Ferdinando Gorges is the man heavily involved in British colonization of New England, including having a land grant for Maine, but never actually set foot in the Americas. Back to William. The expedition of 1623 was considered a failure and while most of his fellow settlers returned home, he decided to live on the Shawmut Peninsula (now old Boston) alone in 1625. So why did he move? Well this was because he didn't like leaders of the Boston church, so he decided to move south to what is now Cumberland, Rhode Island. The first to settle Rhode Island in 1635, one year before Roger Williams founded the Providence Plantations.
