For me learn the Major and Relative Minor scales. Pretty simple once you get the concept of pentatonic scale. Also, recording yourself, starting out sometimes we forget to breathe and pinch vocals. Great video, by the way.

When I started playing there was no internet, I'm an old school player, learned all by ear from recordings, I never use tabs from internet, I later went to the conservatory and trained my ears with solfège.I got jazz lessons from trumpet player Charles Green, he gave me a tremendous tip: Vic when you improvise keep the chord sequence in mind and try to build your solo's in this way, try to play so that the serious listener knows where you are, also your feeling for form gets very solid, your tips are very valuable, musical grestings Vic.

Thank you so much Siir. The old school method is still one of the best ways to learn in my own opinion. Lol. I did not know Charles green, but I went and checked him out. He sounds Amazing! You learned from the best! Thank you for sharing this vital tip with us 🙏🏽

So here I am in my lounge with you,Helen talking on the TV. It feels like you are talking to me. :) Lovely, friendly, sometimes funny, informative advice. I must admit I am one of those guilty of never learning a song right through. Although I have created and recorded many tunes and one complete song of my own music, words and even sang it myself. Like many folk I am still learning but just loving the growing ability that I achieve (Although slowly) . But mainly having FUN. Lovely video Helen Thank you.

You are like my pretty daughter I never had. I can relate to you and perhaps this explains why I am learning so quickly. I am a long time student who never made it to where I was trying to go, musically. I have a wonderful personal instructor, but, I am still experiencing not being able to move faster because of the hourly lessons once a week. I understand that only so much can be taught in an hour. Your videos are moving me so much faster, plus, I can revisit your lessons anytime and as often as possible. As a result, I am really growing musically. I have gone through all of your lessons. My confidence is soaring! Someday, I hope to compensate you for helping to create this new me on the guitar. God bless!

Great tip about trying to create something of your own from what you've learned and making it musical while playing in time. As a guitar composer for bk trailers performing originals that represent a story, I so relate to your tip about learning theory since it teaches why something sounds good and theory teaches how to develop something a more unique sound than what's typically done. You're such a marvelous mentor!

I love the learn by ear tip. The one thing that I have got from learning by ear is that you dont always hear things perfectly and your brain sometimes fills in bits or may misinterpret a phrase, what that means is that you end up adding your own expression to the song rather than perfect copy.

Very good advice for beginners Helen....you cover some really important issues for beginners. I know many lead guitarists who have no dynamics without their pedals...can't play clean at all..just sounds flat. I think of the pick and the flesh of my fingers as tone controls..picks sound different when used on the round edge or the pointed edge. but fingertips sound really, really warm

Awesome advice! And your are just amazingly positive and beautiful! One thing I would add, and this is more for myself; as much as possible, stay far away from, avoid constantly, people who consistently go out of their way to tell you how much you suck. They'll say that they're just being constructive, trying to make you better, etc. When in reality they just want to hold you back if you let them. As a beginner, you're already hard on yourself so having someone who is even less musical( trust me I've been there) in your ear with nothing but negativity under the guise of "friendly motivation, or advice" only adds to your beginner's insecurity.

I can play the 3 guitar solos from the Pink Floyd track Money (well...four technically) but I don't know the chords to the song!! I am also trying to break the habit of just downpicking, but I am finding it really hard to do. I taught myself mainly from books and back in the day, none of them to my recollection ever mentioned alternate picking - they just told you to pluck the string. My hand positioning is not the greatest either and I sometimes accidentally mute other strings with my fingers when I form chords, particularly barre chords. I think I have come a long way, but I have much much further to go and I really have to get my head down and practice. I have actually recorded myself on a DAW, but through the computer mics. The sound quality from this is pretty lousy though. I do agree that it is a great way to see what your good at and what you really need to work on.

If you take theory make sure its aimed towards guitar. I took a music theory class in college and spent half the time trying to figure out how this applies to guitar. Also don't neglect learning chords rather than just hot licks. Most of all DO NOT get a brain tumor - a tumor trashed my left hand.
