MrScobug Respect to that.I'm part of the Royal Parachute Regiment and I was shit scared on my first jump and it took two people to bump me out of the plane. I remember landing in a tree and it took 30 minutes until my unit picked up where I was and I fell 10-15 metres out of the tree when they managed to cut the parachut chords away. Best days of my life. Still in the reg now but I'm retiring in 10 years. Been a lean mean jumping machine since 2008. Hoorah to you my friend and my brothers in arm

Go for it! You will NOT regret it. Everyone is nervous/scared and if they say they aren't, they're lying. Believe me, the training works and once you're out the door and under a full canopy, you'll love it! Remember, bravery isn't the absence of fear but the ability to overcome it.

In training jumps, we jump some between 800-1200 feet. In combat jumps, we are supposed to jump between 400-600 feet without a reserve chute. In the special units such as LRS-U in the 82nd AIRBORNE, they do HALO jumps.

No kidding...talk about room! I was at Bragg from 72-73 (50th Signal, 18th Airborne). This thing is HUGE. You mentioned the 141 and 130. We also used 123's when I was there. At Benning, we did one jump from an old c-119. I was more than happy to get out of that (I'm exaggerating) deathtrap. :-)

TheGuy you get in a lot of trouble because the safety has to waste time catching it and making sure it goes with the rest. Trust they emphasize it a lot at the airborne school. Drop it once and you get kicked
@dwDragon886 жыл бұрын
The biggest concern is that the static line can wrap around the next jumper. Most common static line injury is a line wrapped around the arm which usually rips the bicep muscle off and pulls it down the arm. Very nasty injury that is caused by improper static line control.

It is actually called a static line which deploys the main canopy for this type of airborne operation.
@greyghost97010 жыл бұрын
I believe it's called a static line and it is what opens the parachute. Unlike free fall skydiving, there is no ripcord. The line is connected to the plane and as the jumper leaves, the line pulls and deploys the parachute. If someone has actually done this and I am mistaken, please correct me.
@lesterhall909 жыл бұрын
The static line is attatched to the parachute pack and the parachute pack is held closed by a device which is tied together with a breakable cord. The weight of the paratrooper breaks this cord which allows the pack to open releasin the chute which is packed in a sock like bag which is pulled off the chute by spring loaded pilot chute allowing it to open. The glob of fabrics being pulled in are those bags. Ripcords may be used with these chutes but the rigging is different. I made civilian jumps using military surplus 35 years ago. I doubt anyone uses it anymore.
@Scaredfuzz111 жыл бұрын
The air deflector is normally stowed flush with the fuselage of the aircraft, they are only deployed by the loadmaster for airdrops. Not surprising you haven't seen them most people wouldn't notice them unless they knew they were there.
@HarlinNeal11 жыл бұрын
The most nerve-racking part of a jump is waiting to get out of the plane. I know from experience. AIRBORNE ALL THE WAY...82nd Airborne DIvision from October '91-November '92, and 112th Signal Batallion (Special Operations)(Airborne) from January to November 1993. The jump wings on my uniform are the most precious item on my uniform. I may only have 21 jumps on record, but that's 21 more jumps than my civilian friends who didn't join the Army. Keep your feet and knees together...HOOOAAHH!!

does your shoot deploy immediately or is it like a count to 20 then pull sort of thing? excuse my ignorance
@AJsarge111 жыл бұрын
There's lots of talk about the paratroopers, but also give thanks to the Pilots and Loadmasters who fly the jet and get the equipment ready to go. 2:35 - perfect example of the 535th Airlift Squadron doing their jobs. Fighter pilots get the glory, but Airlift (and airdrop) moves the men and machines to win the fight. Random fact: Aircrew are not allowed to say the word "Green" during airdrop until the light says so and they're clear to drop.

Didn't have those when I was in... C130s, C141s were still king. Aside from helicopters, even jumped out of a C123... Most jumpers today probably never heard of them - they felt like they were gonna shake apart.

Exactly. I guess everyone has to depend on his training. I could be wrong, but theres a reason for foot or rifle drill. To work as a team.....immediatly, without thinking about it. Apply that to the jump procedure and I guess it'll work. I remember being terrified during my first jump, but instead of thinking, hesitating, and analysing everything, I just reacted to the commands, and went out the door. After doing it in the mock tower a million times it just came natural.

I only have 10 static lines from a C-17. Some officer must have wanted some big bragging rights to OK the "in depth" coverage of him doing a door sheck, clearing the rear, and then being the last to tap out after the Assistant JM. Maybe it makes an old NCO jealous we didn't have Hollywood access to document forever our jumps. So I'll begrudgingly give you props. --- Look before you turn, Turn right to avoid collision, and lower jumper has the right of way- have a good'un

Thanks for the response. I see why they teach it that way. We were told not to touch it while in the plane because in turbulence you could easily open it, making a Jesus mess. We had to drop that arm down and use it to keep balance, the other hand is holding the static line. I guess both methods have some validity. Thanks again trooper.

The JM is ensuring there are no existing sharp or protruding edges. If the static line is cut as the jumper exits the aircraft the main chute will not deploy. The jumper will have to deploy his reserve. The jumper has the rest of his life to figure it out.

I guess that's kinda the thing though, "confidence" in everything. Confidence in your equipment, your safeties, the guy in front of you, the guy behind you, your training, etc. That being the case, it's arguable the need of a safety or not. Personally, I'm all for a safety. There was an incident on a jump a month ago a jumper got a static line injury, and he's 40 or so jumps in. I don't exactly know what happened, but the safety failed to grab the line, and the jumper failed to "throw" his line.
