85 year old Army Veteran Paul Gottfried recites Ragged Old Flag

Paul Gottfried, veteran and member of the American Legion in Johnstown, OH, recites the Ragged Old Flag, by Johnny Cash. Gottfried performed this hundreds of times for school children during ceremonies over the years. He has stage four brain cancer and his post wanted his recitations recorded. He is a true patriot and loves old glory like no other.

Thank you. I pray that all American's love this cpuntry. I'm American-Mexican and served proudly in the Army during the Viet Nam conflict. Two brother there at the same time and another brother later. All 7 of us served in the Army, Marines and Navy. Still proud to be a Vetran. Very moving. Lol.

The Johnny Cash version always makes me cry, but this one I bawled like a baby just thinking about the veteran reciting it and some of my ancestors, and what they must have gone through, and all the way back to the beginning of this great country, thank you one and all for the freedom we have today because of your sacrifices.

I knew Paul personally, I have never known someone who loved our Flag as much as Paul. I'm sure they are out there, Paul would go into our schools and teach the kids about our Flags history. He would talk and smile about how Kids later would see him out and say "hey your the flag man" He would put over 100 flags in his yard every holiday that called for them. He loved his family and he loved his Country. He would do anything for anyone of us or anyone he didn't know. Unfortunately we lost Paul June 7 2017. We miss him and his stories. I'm glad that Paul is no longer here to see the dis respect that is going on. RIP "Flag Man" we love you.

Some of my ancestors came over here on the Mayflower. Some of my ancestors fought in the Revolution. I can count John Adams, one of our Founding Fathers and our second President, as a distant cousin. I've got family who fought in just about every war America has participated in. My family has invested and sacrificed too much under this flag for me to lose sight of what it represents.
