It seems weird from a layperson's standpoint, but think of it like how if you throw a rock at a glass sheet, you never know if it'll just break right where the rock hits, or, more commonly, in a whole bunch of other places. The extreme weight of these buildings necessitates that the load is very well distributed and not localized. The main reason that the bulk of the damage occurred near where the planes hit is more of an issue with scale, but also because there was probably tremendous underground damage but it wasn't causing road collapses because roads aren't comparatively heavy. The missing money is easily explained: when isn't there missing money? If there hadn't been missing money, that would have been stranger. It doesn't seem like a cover-up to me anymore. It instead seems like an even worse scenario: - The US Government isn't even afraid that we'll see what they are doing - The world has a lot of skilled people who would wish this on us because our nation is a tyrant to everyone else and lies to us about this.
